Space Shuttle Endeavour, the fifth and final space shuttle heads into the Earth's atmosphere to land on Feb. 9, 2010. This picture was taken on board the International Space Station. The black shape is the Earth and the orange stripe on top is the troposphere, bottom layer of our atmosphere.

This image of a galaxy 68 million light-years away from Earth was taken on Oct, 19 by the Hubble Space Telescope. Pink colors in this photograph mark the places where stars are emerging.

Sun,This picture was taken by astronomy photographer Alan Friedman in the yard of his home town of Buffalo, New York. Friedman used a special hydrogen-alpha filter and a 3.5-inch telescope.

One of the clearest images of sunspots ever was taken on Aug. 24 in a California observatory.

Spacewalk: A feat of daring ,Anchored to a Canadarm2 mobile foot restraint, astronaut Garrett Reisman continued his work during the first of three planned spacewalks for the STS-132 mission. During the spacewalk, which lasted nearly seven and a half hours, Reisman and NASA astronaut Steve Bowen installed a second antenna for high-speed Ku-band transmissions and added a spare parts platform to Dextre, a two-armed extension for the station's robotic arm.

Saturn:There are a total of 62 moons and moonlets of Saturn, 53 of which are named. Here we see the moon Dione against the backdrop of Titan, the largest satellite of Saturn. Apart from the Earth, Titan is the only place in the solar system where liquid water exists.

Hubble Telescope :This picture taken by the orbiting Hubble Telescope was published April 22 in honor of the telescope's 20th anniversary.

Great ball of fire:On Aug. 1, 2010, almost the entire Earth-facing side of the sun erupted in a tumult of activity. This image from the Solar Dynamics Observatory of the news-making solar event onshows the C3-class solar flare (white area on upper left), a solar tsunami (wave-like structure, upper right), multiple filaments of magnetism lifting off the stellar surface, large-scale shaking of the solar corona, radio bursts, a coronal mass ejection and more.

Sun and Moon:On Oct. 7, 2010, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, observed its first lunar transit when the new moon passed directly between the spacecraft (in its geosynchronous orbit) and the sun. With SDO watching the sun in a wavelength of extreme ultraviolet light, the dark moon created a partial eclipse of the sun.

Solar Prominence:This new image from the Solar Dynamics Observatory's Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) shows in great detail a solar prominence taken from a March 30, 2010 eruption. The twisting motion of the material is the most noticeable feature.

Launched on Feb. 11, 2010, SDO is the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the sun. During its five-year mission, it will examine the sun's magnetic field and also provide a better understanding of the role the sun plays in Earth's atmospheric chemistry and climate. Since its launch, engineers have been testing and verifying the spacecraft's components. Now fully operational, SDO will provide images with clarity 10 times better than high-definition television and will return more comprehensive science data faster than any other solar observation spacecraft.

Comet McNaught:This comet was photographed by Michael Jager of Stiksendorfa, Austria, on the morning of June 6. It is the brightest comet in 40 years. In January and February 2007, it could be seen with just the naked eye in the southern hemisphere.

Manam Volcano Islands:This island is a huge volcano with a diameter of 10 kilometers and an almost proper conical shape. Its steep slopes are composed of many layers of hardened lava left from previous eruptions.

Beautiful Coma Berenices:The Hubble Telescope photographed a cluster of galaxies on Aug. 10 bearing the beautiful name Coma Berenices. This cluster is separated from the Earth by a distance of 320 light-years.

Space nebula:A snapshot from Hubble Space Telescope shows "Nebula IRAS 05437 2502." This is an unusual nebula in the constellation Taurus. Its main feature is the bright arc outlining the upper edge of interstellar dust.

Shadows from Saturn's Rings:Clearly visible shadows are cast by Saturn's rings dense clouds of ammonia released into the atmosphere. The diameter of Saturn's rings is almost 250,000 kilometer, while the thickness of the rings is less than 1 kilometer.

Spiral galaxies:These two galaxies — NGC 5426 and NGC 5427 — have nearly the same size and are located in the constellation Virgo. The galaxies are very close to each other but still not close enough for their stars to begin to collide with each other.

Space spiral:On Sept. 7, the Hubble Telescope, using infrared photography, captures an amazing spiral nebula, which has almost a perfect shape.

Orbiting space station:Photo shows the International Space Station orbiting against the moon. The picture was taken in the Hungarian city Guergufalu 75 kilometers from Budapest on Oct. 21.
