The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the curative petition of Yakub Memon, who has been given death penalty in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
Following the issue of death warrant by the Tada Court, Memon will be hanged on July 30 at 7:00 a.m. in Nagpur Jail. Justice (Retired) P.D. Kode, who gave the death penalty to Memon in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blast case, said that the court's decision has made the common man retain his faith in the judiciary.
"This is a solace for the common man, who keeps faith in the judiciary, investigative agencies and the government. I am also happy because it seems that finality has been reached. As far as India is concerned, we do not tolerate the people who play with the valuable rights given to our citizens," he told ANI. " I think there must be no substance found in the point kept forward by the accused,"he added.
Memon has been sentenced to death in the March 12, 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
On July 27th, 2007, Memon was sentenced to death by Justice (Retd) P D Kode, who was then the special judge of the court set up under Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act in Mumbai.
However, his sentence was upheld by a Supreme Court bench headed by then Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan on March 21st, 2013. On April 9th this year, a three-member bench headed by Justice A R Dave rejected the review plea of Yakub. President Pranab Mukherjee had also rejected his mercy petition.
An anti-terror court in Mumbai has issued a warrant to carry out the death sentence against 53-year-old Memon, accordingly which he will be hanged at 7 am on July 30 in Nagpur Central Jail. The 19993 blasts convict Yakub Memon is likely to be hanged if his petition for mercy is rejected by the Supreme Court. This will be the first execution related to the 1993 serial blasts, in which over 250 people were killed
