Yeda Yakub, a key accused in the 1993 serial blasts of Mumbai.
They told TOI that Khan, who had been unwell for a few months, suffered a heart attack on Wednesday morning. He died before he could be rushed to a hospital.
Khan is survived by his wife and children who run a construction business in Mumbai.
Confirming the report, police commissioner Rakesh Maria, who had led investigations into the blasts, said: "We have heard about Yeda Yakub's death from unofficial channels.''
Yakub and his elder brother Majid played a key role in the blasts at the behest of the main accused Tiger Memon. Both the brothers actively took part in landing RDX in Raigad. It was from there that the RDX was sent to various places, including Memon's residence at Al Hussain building, where most of the bombs were assembled and then placed in various vehicles across the city to carry out the attacks. He then fled to Dubai and later to Karachi.
Majid alias 'M K builder' was shot dead in 2000 by Chhota Rajan in Bandra.
Close family friends said that Yeda was "very disturbed" since the past few years. In 2011, he landed in Dubai to surrender but later changed his mind and went back to Karachi.
In October 2011, TOI had reported that he was detained in Dubai for travelling on a fictitious Pakistani passport. Unlike many others, the ISI had got a Pakistani passport for Khqan.
CBI had issued a red corner notice (RCN) and his name was put on the lookout notice against him.
"There was tremendous pressure on him as his sons wanted him to surrender and lead a clean life in Mumbai,'' said a source.
