Well its 100 years of Indian film industry, not bollywood.

Interestingly the first film was by Dadasaheb Torne, not Dadasaheb Falke, but Falke gets the credit on technical grounds. (Which may be fair, but Torne has to be recognised too)

BTW I'm surprised nobody mentioned the apu trilogy yet. Its mindbogglingly stunning.

yup! and members especially from South and Bengal should start posting soon. Tamil Marathi and bengali cinema has a huge role to play in success and recognition of Indian cinema globally.

The problem with the majority of the movie audience in India is that they never would want to challenge themselves to see movies that can linger for days, months or even years to come. And every movie need not have a moral to teach, it is sufficient if each has a story to tell, however sombre, poignant or dark they may be. In that respect, we have a long way before our audiences become mature enough to demand that change. The best way people in the movie making community get an opportunity to tell the world about their reel lives are through film festivals. And THIS is what i feel a lack of being promoted in India. We need not have something like a Cannes, but a Sundance, or a Tribeca, or Berlin film fests should be something that we should aspire for.

People here mention "3 idiots" because we are imbibed in that culture of "feel-good" and "easy on the eyes" movie that we never break out of our shell to see or make movies like "Mary and Max" ( an example of a very dark and depressing movie, but a fantastically made film) OR say "Detachment" (a must watch i would say), which i would say, especially the former, are superbly written movies as compared to that Masala-mediocrity Chetan Bhagat inspired "3 Idiots". I dare say, that unless we inspire creativity and demand change in our movie watching experiences, our Industry will keep churning out the same braindead Govinda-Salman BS.

Indians of the current generation need and deserve a lot more cinematic experience and the value of a good story than the one we have.
