In the end of one hundred years of war period, Circassia region of the Caucasus was invaded and colonized by Russian Empire in 1864. During that period of time the inhabitants of the West Caucasus, more than one million five hundred thousand Circassians (Adige, Abkhaz and Wubikh people), were forced to leave their land in famine after all their villages and fields were burned and destroyed. They were exiled from their land to Ottoman Empire under inhumane conditions.

Sochi region, where the 2014 Winter Olympics will be held, was the center that the parliament of independent and free Circassiawas gathering until 1864. After the Russian invasion it was not only the Circassians removed from their land but also all their cultural heritage and even their graves were completely destroyed brutally. Today in the state museums of Sochi there is nothing displayed related to Circassians, the autochthonous people of that land for thousands of years. The real ancient history of Sochiextends to Anatolian Hattis, famous Troy, Meot and Sind Empires is almost forgotten. The Russian written history of Sochibegins in 1830 with the victories bombardment of Russian Tsar Navy landing soldiers to the Socha village which was destroyed and renamed by Russians as Navagiski fortified territory. In the museums of Sochi you can only see the pictures of poor Russian mujicks who were brought from inner Russia then forced to settle to Circassia after the Circassian Exile and also the Cossacks who even appropriating the national clothes of the exiled inhabitants shamelessly.

The grandchildren of the massacred and exiled native people of the 2014 winter Olympics city Sochi and the Krasnodar Kray still live in the countries they were exiled to but their faces turned towards to their homeland. There are millions of Circassians who live in the other side of Black Sea in Turkey, are longing and waiting to repatriate to their motherland. Now in destroyed Circassian villages, on the lost graves of Circassians, in Circassia, there are true strangers living there. As a result of a hundred years of iron curtain they probably don’t even have any idea about the real owners of those lands. Today Circassia became Russian Riviera where the first and the foremost Mr. Putin having rest, swimming and skiing.

The Russian Federation governments are still completely blind and deaf to develop any empathy or to understand the feelings and the longings of the people of the Caucasus. Moreover the real history is distorted by the Russian state purposely. To conceal the massacre and the exile of the ninety percent of Circassians, the reality of the Circassian legendary resistance to colonial powers for more than one hundred years is obviously ignored. For that purpose producing the factitious history thesis of 450-th years voluntary joining together of Circassia’s to Marx’s so called prison of nations Tsarist Russia is very tragicomic and flippantly far away from the seriousness of a statehood. Today Russian Federation government appropriates funds of millions of rubles for spreading that propaganda to all over the Circassian federal republics (Adigeya, Karachai, Cherkes and Kabardino Balkaria) by official campaigns and imposing anniversary ceremonies instead of using that money to improve the conditions in those underdeveloped republics.

Even more, regardless of the fact that all the criticism and the protest of the Circassian intellectuals and organizations both in the Caucasus and in the Diaspora, hasty preparations for 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics is still pursuing heartily. The geography and the ecological structure of that beautiful and sacred part of our land are destroyed by commands of the inconsiderate Russian politicians in Moscow atrociously.

After Circassian exile in 1864 Sochi was emptied from Circassians and the Kbaada Valley was renamed as Krasnaya Polyana where the heavy construction equipments are excavating the mountains for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics now. On the contrary of Russian culture, Circassians are very respectful even to the death bodies of their enemies. Now the skulls and the bones of our honorable ancestors are thrown away all over the place by Russians barbarously. The planned grotesque destroying process of that one of the most beautiful parts’ of the Caucasus is very meaningful for Circassians.

By all means we, the people of Caucasus, we are not surprised from the Russian behaviour. All the process is running by the commands of the new tsar of Russia, Mr. Vladimir Putin who has the blood of the thousands of children of Caucasus on his hands, from Chechenya, Daghestan, Beslan... etc. May Mr. Putin as an inheritor of General Yermalov, General Vorontzov, General Baryatinski, is not able to understand how his smart decisions cause pain for Circassians and confronting them. But the time will manifest. After the glasnost the governors of the Circassian republics in Caucasus were forced by public to take action to built Circassian Exile monuments. Although it has been long years, there are still not any government funds received to finish that project. At that point the supreme government shows the highest effort indeed. Nobody but only them can build such an expensive and meaningful genocide monument to our land other than 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics which must have been the symbol of the friendship and the brotherhood of people. Despite Sochi is the place where the “Drujba Derevo” (the tree of friendship) belongs to, there is no any native people left in that land, there is no any native people is allowed to settle there.

As the Circassians both in Caucasus and the Diaspora announced before by sending lots of protesting letters to Olympics Committee, even the idea of holding Olympics in Sochi on the soil of genocide where the hundreds of thousands of Circassian tears, moans and curse are bleeding, can not be acceptable.

2014 Sochi Winter Olympics will always be remembered only as “2014 Circassian Genocide Olympics”.

Unfortunately 2014 Circassian Genocide Olympics is not only making the Olympics a tool of inane politics but it is also renewing the sorrow of Circassians in exile. Besides it also intensifies the deep and legitimate distrust on Russia for hundreds of years. It causes hate.

As the inheritor of one of the most humanist culture in the world, we, the people of the Caucasus, inspite of the past and the present, we don’t want to have any kind of abhorrence towards other people including the Russians.

Still, we can not be unresponsive to the provocative actions of declining and distorting the thousands of years old real history of our people and our land. As Circassians, as grandchildren of our ancestors we have enough pride and honor to not to bear this denial.

Again, we want to urge all the Russian Federation governments and rightminded intellectuals of Russia. Please stop those provocative actions.

Stop Imperialist and GreatRussian (Velikorus) chauvinist behaviour.

As a criminal you can not pretend to be fair, you can not to powerful forever!

You are losing the Caucasus, you are losing all the people of the Caucasus!

@Neptune
I think you are circassian, brother. What is your opinion?

It really wouldn't matter much whether it was in Auschwitz or Sochi. Sochi is the capital of genocide. The center of olympics will be Krasnaya Polyana, which literally means Red Yards or Red Steps which took it's name by the bled blood of Circassian people. KSA's intelligence chief had mentioned many times that Chechnians will use massive violence in order to protest it. Well...i don't care what they do...why? Because they know well that they'll be skiing on the mass graves of my people.

BTW, It made me very sad to hear about this genocide. It has been one of the worst ethnic cleansing of the history. RIP to dead Circassian Brothers.

Decency begs you to spare this thread of loonacies.

On Topic: It may not amount to much but on a personal note,as protest,i will not watch a single event at these Olympics. It's a shame that the world is blind to such events just because the circassians don't have something like the jewish lobby behind them to tell their painfull history.

Heartwarming story but the reason you won't be watching the Olympics is because Romania will be an underachiever.

As for the Turkish having a distane for the olympics because of genocide, well that is a bit of a hypocrisy considering Turkey still denies the Armanian genocide not to mention the fact that the Ottoman empire has waged dozens of wars, conquered countries throughout the middle east and Europe and forcibly converted entire people to Islam and murdered the ones that rejected it.

Where was all of this crying during the winter Olympics in Utah? Native Americans don't mean anything or are certain people more special then others? Time to grow up and stop being hyper sensitive to ancient history, people act like it effects their daily lives. My ancestors were in-slaved and murdered too but that has no bearing on me nor do I hold any grudges towards the descendants of the people responsible.

I usually watch summer/winter Olympics regardless Romania's performance in them. That goes for World and European Football Championships,i love sports, especially such grandiose gatherings. But,i understand ,you had to take a small jab before delivering your speech.

I don't thing this is about historic grudges, just recognition about these peoples plight. They want their history and suffering be known,i would have said the same thing if it was a Turkish Olympics situated on a massacre sight of Armenians.

Utah, Sochi or Auschwitz...they are not different...only different people, different places. But they all faced the same fate. you said being hyper sensitivy. I can understand the killing of POWs, MIAs. But then please tell me how could millions of children and women got "disappeared" at Krasnaya Polyana?...why it means the Red Lawns?

As for the Armenian Struggle, thousands of cavalry were withdrawn from the frontlines in order to protect the route of Armenians to their planned locations. Separists were intervened with force, just kid we did it to our own people during the rebellitions at Republic-era. Besides that there was nothing that was even similar to the so-called genocide.

So why is Sochi any different from other Olympic venus in other countries? It's a hypocrisy to watch other olympic games while subjecting Sochi to moral scrutiny. The olympics have been held in the US, which killed the Native Americans and took their land. Japan has in-slaved and killed millions of people and this was much more recent then Sochi (1930s-1040s). The British colonized countries, also recent, the same can be said for the Italians and the Chinese have deplorable human rights, so on and so fourth.

Watching or not watching the Olympics is a personal choice, it's one of the few times countries come together and show solidarity or at least understanding. Politics and grudges have no room in the Olympics.

Killing POWs is never okay. Killing anyone is wrong, it does not matter who does it. I can easily admit that the Russians have killed many people, those people responsible deserve what they get (the killers).

This is a case of double standars, while you condemn Sochi you brush aside the Armenian Genocide and even suggest it was not a big deal. The Armenian Genocide was an atrocity despite what they teach you in Turkey. It equals if not exceeds the barbaric treatment of jews by the Germans. The Armenians were burned, drowned, beheaded, shot, sent on death marches ect. No excuses, no way out, there is enough eye witnesses, mass graves photographs ect to know that the event took place. There is also other atrocities that the Turks committed so lets not be selective who is evil and who gets the free pass.

We also know that most Armenians were not separatists but regular innocent civilians many of which were children and the elderly. You are free to hold you opinions on Sochi but then it would only be right to recognize the Armenian Genocide for what it was, regardless my stance on Olympic games is that politics and grudges have no place.

What we see here is another piece of propaganda chatter from Europe.
Actually in the Caucasus coexisted peoples of two religions: Christianity and Islam . In the 18-19 century a clash of political and economic interests of Russia and Turkey was added. Christian peoples of the Caucasus: Armenians, Georgians, Ossetians did not want the Turkish domination. What it resulted for Armenians is known. Russia at that time had a lot of peoples professing Islam. There was no oppression of peoples for religious reasons in Russia. In the 19th century Turkey was weaker than Russia, so the confrontation in the Caucasus was resolved in favor of Russia. There was no oppression of peoples who agreed to recognize Russian sovereignty. But any armed resistance was suppressed. In the second half of the 19th century two circumstances were added. First is that Russia banned slavery in all its forms. At the same time, among the peoples of the Caucasus, slavery flourished. Liberation of people and prohibition of slavery caused serious discontent among their noble elite. In addition, the nobility was obliged to service in Russian regular army. The second factor was British policy, which opposed Russia and supported Turkey. The result was exactly the same as it is now in Syria. Support the Mujahideens, arms supplies, war. Deliveries were made by sea. Russia after the defeat in the Crimean War had no fleet in the Black Sea. So security of the coast became crucial. There was a need to take the coastal line for the security zone.
Thus, the real reason for the eviction of people from the coast of the Caucasus was a colonial, aggressive British policy, popping its nose everywhere, like the US today. Russia only defended its borders.
Now about the resettlement. People were asked to move to the east, to the Kuban, or go to Turkey. The idea of moving people to Turkey was actively supported by Turkey and Britain. What happened to resettled people in Russia was no different from the fate of other people in Russia, which saw a number of resettlements in the history. As for the people in Turkey, their fate also was not extraordinary.
Those who now raises this issue, express nothing but the same political interests of Britain and the US, and hence wish people to become hostages of dirty politicians again.

What he stated was totally relevant and more historically accurate then anything that you or anyone else has presented. I see facts and history makes people uncomfortable so much so that no one came back with a rebuttal to my counter arguments. As for calling victor07's post "nonsense" please explain what makes it nonsense.

And they like to repeat the British fairy tale of "millions killed and tortured Muslims in the Caucasus." Although in those years the population of whole Georgia, for example, was 1,000,000.
