180 MPs fail to get degrees verified from HEC, face disqualification

ISLAMABAD - Despite clear directions from the Supreme Court (SC) and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), a total of 180 members of national and provincial assemblies, including six incumbent senators have not as yet verified their educational degrees from the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
HEC sources said on Sunday that 55 MPs have so far been disqualified following court orders for having fake degrees on the basis of HEC reports while cases of 17 members are pending in various courts. Sources said ECP and HEC are in touch and those who have not gotten their degrees verified, would not be able to contest in the upcoming elections. They said the ECP had sent reminders to 249 MPs on 7th February, 2013 asking them to get their degrees verified within 15 days. In response to the letter, about seventy members sent their degrees to HEC which were found to be genuine. The ECP in its letter had made clear that if degrees were not verified within the due date, they would be considered as fake and appropriate action would be taken.

Since they are not verifying their degrees, they should be completely disqualified and barred from filling nomination papers! Their degrees should be considered fake! thus we will have Totally new 180 parliament members!

No one can begin to imagine the extent of the rot in the government today. We are facing a sad situation where the poor are literally starving while the rich make mansion after mansion for themselves. It is our duty to care about the well-being of the poor. We can never forget them nor can we ever stop sympathizing with them.

In Pakistan corruption should be a crime punishable by the death penalty. I am totally serious here. It is as grave as stealing from a handicapped man who has not but a single ruppee available in his pocket. Such a man is a callous animal undeserving of the position that has been given to him. We need people that come to power on the basis of merit and effort alone.

Completely agree... Even today for a normal Job our degrees get verified by the company.. And they want to lead us without verification. Anyone not complying with this, should be disqualified forever

bigger crime is they got into public office, took oath that their documents are genuine, hence they fraud not only with the nation but also with the State of Pakistan.

it shouldnot matter if the guy is PTI/PMLN/PPP/ANP/MQM/JI/JUIF whoever, just disqualify them... we dont need such people !!

If only a few candidates are disqualified, it is the candidates' problem.

If a large majority of candidates are disqualified, it becomes the ECP's problem. And then the process of finding some sort of "accommodation" is likely.

If one steal.. it is individual problem and if every one steal than constitution shall be amended to legalise stealing!

If law cannot be amended in assembly than Iftikhar ch. can make accommodation by issuing life time stay order to all thieves and terrorists.

Political parties giving these unqualified candidates or shell we say career politicians the ticket to run for the seat on their behalf. So to answer your question ''NO'' this isn't ECP problem its political parties problem solve it or lose the seat.
