New Delhi, India (AHN) - India will be donating $5 million towards immediate relief measures in Haiti, the Indian Prime Minister announced Friday.
Manmohan Singh conveyed his condolences to Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive of Haiti and the people of the island nation on the loss of lives and devastation from the Tuesday earthquake.
"India stands by the government and the people of Haiti in their hour of need. I would also like to convey our condolences to the injured and family members of those who have died on account of the earthquake. We have no doubt that the people of Haiti have the strength and resilience to overcome this natural disaster," Singh said.
On Thursday, the Indian government announced a donation of $1 million in cash to Haiti for immediate and emergency relief purposes.
A ministry of external affairs release on Thursday said that India was "deeply saddened" at the death and destruction caused by the massive earthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday.
"Communications with Haiti are currently difficult. However, it has been ascertained that all 140 personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) deployed with the United Nations are safe. So are all civil police officers deployed with the United Nations Mission in Haiti," the release said.
The ministry is also in contact with the Indian Embassy in Havana, which is concurrently accredited to Haiti, to ascertain the welfare of Indians who are in Haiti at the moment.
The 7.0 magnitude earthquake affected about 3 million people and 45,000-50,000 people are feared dead.
