The Bazhenov Formation (Tithonian to Berriasian) occupies about 1 million km 2 in the central part of the West Siberian plate and is buried by 2,000 to 3,000 meters of younger sediments. The aggregate mass of organic matter in the Bazhenov Formation is as high as 18 trillion tons (126 trillion barrels of oil equivalent). It is known as one of the largest oil sources in the world. About 500 samples from 39 oil wells throughout the formation were analyzed; it was shown that Bazhenov rocks contain more U, Mo, V, Cu, Zn, and Ni than average black shales; moreover, the concentrations of these elements increase toward the center of the paleobasin.

There can be 6 to 8 barrels of oil in a ton, depending on density.

This is a follow up on a prior article that detailed the Bazhenov is similar to the Bakken Oil formation in North Dakota but covers 80 times the land area

Bazhenov-Neocomian oil formation

The formation feeds conventional oil fields. Those conventional oilfields have over 144 billion barrels of oil. There have been some wells drilled into the Bazhenov tight oil area and those are producing 400 barrels of oil per day, which is similar to the productivity of Bakken oil wells.

Geopolitical implication

Russia has the potential to develop the Bazhenov Formation to remain and energy superpower for another 100 years.

Oil and Gas Journal had an analysis of the Bazhenov in 2000

Estimating oil reserves from 2000

In light of the above it is interesting to estimate oil reserves on the basis of the following considerations. Let us assume that the productive pay area controlled by the AHFP zone is equal to this zone, i.e., 15,600 sq km, and that the net pay is equal to the vertical extent of fractures, i.e., 350 m. Let the fracture volume be 0.3% (f = 0.003). At oil density of 0.8 t/cu m and oil formation factor 1.4 (parameters typical of Jurassic oils) the oil reserves calculated by the volumetric method are in excess of 9 billion tons.

We want to emphasize that these are recoverable reserves, because we calculate only the amount of oil contained in the fractures; if proper oil production technology is used, all oil will be recovered. In this connection we want to say that the depletion drive pilot production of Jurassic reservoirs has already yielded almost 300,000 tons in some wells.

It should be also noted that in this reserve calculation we used minimum parameters deliberately. But there are good reasons to assume greater productive pay area, net pay, and fracture porosity. With account of such changes the volume of the oil-filled fractures will increase at least 2-3 times and oil reserves will amount to 20-30 billion tons (140 billion to 210 billion barrels).

Historical Bakken Estimates

USGS technically recoverable oil 1995 estimate was 151 million barrels of oil for the Bakken.

(USGS 2007) North Dakota and Montana have an estimated 3.0 to 4.3 billion barrels of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil in an area known as the Bakken Formation

Recoverable oil Bakken estimate 2010 by Continental Resources was 24 billion barrels.

Recoverable oil Bakken estimate 2012 by Continental Resources is 27 to 45 billion barrels.

If the Bazhenov is Similar to Bakken

The 2000 estimate of 140 to 210 billion barrels of recoverable oil could be 15 to 100 times too low. The increase would be because of the improved horizontal drilling technology enabling a higher recover rate.

Bye bye OPEC

God save Arabs.
Once a tau said ' agar wha tel na hotta to we mhare yaha chollan aya karte' means if there was no oil they will come here to work. :P and taus were never wrong.

Russia is an energy superpower indeed.

And we will most likely be the biggest buyers, considering the amount of energy it takes to fuel our development.

It will be good for the market, and if true and developed a good source for the Chinese.

Fantastic news.

We Iranians would exponentially benefit from oil becoming cheap in the future. The cheaper oil is the less important Iran will become in the short term and that means we can finally start the democratization process without having to deal with every superpower on the planet. We have a fantastic educated pop'n and a huge desire for democratization. Our industry is good too. This is horrible news for the midget Persian Gulf oil kingdoms though. Without oil they will neither have money nor US attention.

Russia is finding more oil. Canada is increasing output from the current 1 mb/day to 5 mb/day by 2020. USA is starting to increase output and will soon export more than SA. All this will lower the price in the future.

A good day for Alternative Energy and Russian Economy a bad day for OPEC.

It's plain obivious that this discovery is Very good indeed (Ching-Ching) to the Russian, no need to say more but this is also good on the alternative energy developer while the OPEC was dominate in the past, they supress the alternative energy developement so they would not ran out of business bby those eco-folk.

Now if Russian can depend on this oil reserve for a while, it will bring a semi-super power off support of OPEC and they would need to relax on the restriction on alternative energy development.

Face it, even with the newest discovery, oil are gonna be depleted one day, just of matter of when, alternative energy is the true future savior.

Yes, this is good news but dispute this find, we are slowly but surely diversifying our economy, in the last couple of years non-energy sectors of the economy grew much faster than energy sectors, and this trend is only going too get faster with us joining WTO.:)

Did you guys have alternative energy research in Russia? If you do, how big the scale of it?
I would love to see Putin put those revenue generated by the oil sell and put into Alternative Energy developement, that would shut those OPEC guy up :)

soon.. oil price will fall.. no one will care for saudi oil. then the relevance of these types in the world will dwindle.

You have a unique position to be an energy exporting country and at the same time become a hi-tech country like Korea, Japan, USA etc. In fact, Russia has everything favorable to them and despite that I don't understand how come your country is so much like India in terms of corruption and other such negative elements.

Russia has so many advantages that other countries lack:

- Powerful industrial base

- Close proximity to some of the least corrupt countries on earth aka Nordic countries from where positive influence can be used.

- Massive potential production capacity

- Strong strategic industrial sector

- Extremely rich in oil and gas resources

- Extremely rich in nuclear and radioactive resources

- Immense land to invest in international real estate potential boom (along the Middle Eastern models of investment).

- Low population to take care of meaning more benefits from the state per person and easier to control crime and corruption.

- A very good international image due to non-interference in other countries' internal matters.

- A devastating armory of weapons, making Russia only second to USA in terms of military might; guaranteeing your resource security.

All Russia needs is to channelize its potential properly.

soon.. oil price will fall.. no one will care for saudi oil. then the relevance of these types in the world will dwindle.

It will be wonderful for Asian countries as Russia will release oil to all Asian countries through the stans and China and we will benefit the maximum being the largest consumers in Asia. Japan may benefit as well if Japanese can cool down their tensions with Kremlin.

OPEC is a pain in the @$$ only because you Americans pamper it so much. You have such strong influence that you can regulate the prices but you don't bring it down.

I don't know why you think the America have anypower in the OPEC, together SA, Iran, Iraq and Kuwait have all the say on OPEC, the price still hasn't drop even if we invaded 3 of them. WE have to follow what those country say, not the other way around.
