The fights prompted riot police to fire tear gas, which caused panic among supporters, said East Java Police Chief Nico Afinta.
Hundreds of people ran to an exit gate in an effort to avoid the tear gas. Some suffocated in the chaos and others were trampled, killing 34 almost instantly.

@Indos

RIP
This is utter stupidity. 127 deaths over a football match.
Won't be the first time, football fans are crazy. This was commonplace in 80s and 90s hundreds of people used to die in soccer riots every year.

@Indos

100 % fault on police and crowd management.

They should let Arema supporters go into the field and stay there instead of pushing them out from the field. I think it is also FIFA fault as their regulation usually will punish team that allow the supporters inside the field, some how under particular condition, field is an open space that could help people do self evacuation

Police is fool to shoot gas into the stadium that force people to go out because they cannot breath

Police is fool as they tried to avoid brawl between two team by only allowing one gate to open as the other team supporters are in outside stadium ( they are not allowed to enter the stadium, so they are outside watching big TV outside the stadium)

Well, just let all gates open, let people come to field for self evacuation, and let two fanatic supporters do fight in the outside. This is trade off that we should do, some lethal brawl may happen because of my solution, but the casualties will be much lower than current one if it is done

most likely police didn't think ahead and just wanted to stop the brawl.

most likely police didn't think ahead and just wanted to stop the brawl.

That is likely the case as casualties among Indonesian football match will always about fighting between fanatic supporters, so this, appeared, has become their main focus. This incident will be our biggest lesson to seriously put crowd management as very important matter in any football match that can bring around 35.000 -77.000 people into the stadium.

Well how about have a brain check before entering the stadium

More explanation about the incident

At some minutes you can see huge gas smoke launched by stupid police while they only open one gate to hinder too much supporters go out too quicky and meet with the opponent supporters in the outside stadium.

The crowd strategy that they have planned (that lead to this disaster) I think is to let opponent supporters to go home before meeting with the host supporters outside the stadium.

Fanatic opponent supporters of Persebaya Surabaya that use train from Surabaya city into Malang city is outside stadium watching big TV outside. ( they are not allow to be inside the stadium to prevent possible brawl to happen inside stadium )

Police should just let the fan fight and cool down. Will have a few possible death and injured at worst. now it's a disaster.

Most scenarios like this many of the weakest who couldn't get out of the way and being trampled to death are children and women. Its pretty sad and was usual occurance in Western countries before they managed the stadiums better.

Possibly as deadly as south american football, maybe even more.

Very sad to see this, Allah rest their souls.

All the ones involved in the rioting and fighting should be handed life sentences, many died due to their evil actions.
