12-year-old in Srinagar booked for ‘attempt to murder’

A local court on Tuesday granted bail to a class VI student, who was booked for attempt to murder, rioting and arson by the Omar Abdullah-led government for stone-pelting and thrashing policemen besides setting their vehicle ablaze at Eidgah here on Eid-ul-Fitr last week.

The twelve-year-old boy was allegedly arrested on Sunday by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and sent to a juvenile home on Monday for 15 days on court orders. However his counsel moved an application before principal sessions judge in Srinagar, Mohammad Shafi Khan, who on Tuesday ordered his release on bail “in the interest of justice”.

Among other charges, the boy was booked under section 307 (attempt to murder), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapons), 149 (offence committed by any member of unlawful assembly), 152 (assaulting or obstructing public servant when suppressing riot) of the Ranbir Penal code. Violence had marked Eid-ul-Fitr last week when separatist protesters went on a rampage, torching police vehicle and pelting stones on the security forces leaving three policemen injured near Eidgah in the sensitive old Srinagar city.

The police had launched a massive manhunt to arrest the persons involved in the incident. Police sources said they identified the accused after watching the videos and going through the photographic evidence.

The boy was subsequently arrested and presented before the local court on Monday which after taking into consideration his tender age sent him to juvenile home at Harwan for 15 days.

“It will be in the interest of justice if the juvenile is released on furnishing a bond by his father in terms of juvenile justice act. The juvenile is directed to be released and handed overto his father against proper receipt,” Mohammad Shafi Khan said in his order.
