Chinese spend billions on Singles' Day

Chinese shoppers unleashed a record deluge of cash online for Singles Day on Friday, Alibaba said, spending more than $13 billion with the e-commerce giant in the world's biggest online shopping promotion.

Singles' Day -- named for the repeated digit 1 in the date November 11 -- was created by Alibaba in 2009.

Now in just 24 hours it surpasses the main US online spending spree, the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday.

Gross merchandise volume, Alibaba's key measure of online sales, had overtaken last year’s total of 91.2 billion yuan ($13.4 billion) by 3:20 pm (0720 GMT), the firm said -- with more than $1 billion spent in the first five minutes.

Similarly, rival e-commerce giant JD.com, which focuses more on electronics, said its sales total -- which it did not specify -- surpassed last year's figure at 1:33 pm.

Some shoppers stayed up until midnight to purchase discounted goods the moment Singles Day got under way.

Among them was Shanghai white-collar worker Chen Yang, 29, who tried to buy things she had her eyes on earlier and spent about 1,000 yuan on purchases from shoes to shampoo.

“I’m so happy after I finished my shopping, though I still need to pay my credit card later," she said. "But I’m just so looking forward to getting my packages now.”

In the US, total online sales for the five days from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday last year stood at $11.1 billion, according to Adobe Digital Index.

Alibaba's New York-listed stock has been buoyant this year in spite of worries over slowing growth in China, as consumer spending has expanded while the old industrial economy struggles due to overcapacity and sluggish demand.

China's economy expanded at its slowest rate in a quarter of a century last year and has eased further this year, as Beijing tries to shift growth drivers from investment and exports to domestic consumption.
- 'Confidence index' -

Alibaba kicked off this year’s event with a gala in the southern city of Shenzhen on Thursday night, inviting international and domestic stars from basketball player Kobe Bryant to pop rock band OneRepublic.

Singer Katy Perry was also originally scheduled to perform but cancelled at the last minute due to a family emergency, she said on China's Twitter-like Weibo.

Analysts said the event, which has gained more and more traction in the past few years, is key to Alibaba.

The day's turnover was only "a very small fraction of its total annual sales", independent e-commerce analyst Li Chengdong said, but was "a confidence index for the firm".

"If they do well in this, it is a boost to investors' confidence,” he told AFP.

But sales growth may not match last year's 60 percent rise, he warned, in the face of economic worries and stricter regulation.

China’s commerce watchdog SAIC summoned Alibaba and 14 other e-commerce companies earlier this week, banning them from making up fake orders and lifting prices before giving out discounts.

Alibaba itself has sought to downplay the importance of the turnover statistic.

"I don't have any requirement for the sales figure," Alibaba quoted chairman Jack Ma as saying in a statement on Weibo, adding the day was all about “happiness and joy”.

Online shopping is a bright spot in Beijing's efforts to transform the economy, growing 26.1 percent in the January to September period according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

That outstripped both overall retail growth of 10.4 percent in the period, and official GDP expansion of 6.7 percent in each of the first three quarters.

China’s State Post Bureau has estimated the country will handle more than one billion packages during the six days from Friday, up 35 percent from last year, the official news agency Xinhua reported.

观察者网查询发现,为降低全社会物流成本,有效解决“双11”期间货物井喷状况,给客户带来更好的服务体验,中国铁路总公司(以下简称铁总)试水推出了铁路快捷货运产品。

铁路客运有“黄金周”,“双11”之后的这周也成了“电商黄金周”,在11月11日至20日的10天时间内,铁总充分依托高铁快运、铁路干线运输优势,加强与电商、快递企业合作,推出高铁快运当日达、次晨达和电商班列等多种快捷货运产品。

此外,早在今年10月20日起,高铁快运服务网络已扩展至全国所有高铁覆盖区域的505个城市,基本实现直辖市、省会城市、中东部地区地级市和经济发达县域全覆盖。

以北京为例。据《北京青年报》消息,从11月11日至11月20日,仅在北京,中铁快运北京分公司每天将利用北京始发的200余趟高铁列车进行快件运输。此外,京铁物流中心号称“货运动车”的电商班列也加入了运输大军。

今年,北京铁路局部门根据前期的运力测算,第一次为18趟上座率一般的高铁列车专门预留出了一节车厢运送高铁快件,高铁快件运输的能力随即提高了2.5倍。

“综合算下来,这个‘双11’,北京始发的高铁每天就有超过200趟列车可以运送高铁快件,总运输能力可达230吨。”中铁快运北京分公司副总经理孙志军说,这个“双11”中铁快运北京分公司将投入千余名员工参与快运黄金周运输。

北京青年报记者了解到,此前,铁路的高铁快件也能随着高铁列车一起运输,北京西站的98趟列车和北京南站的100趟列车都在承担这项工作。但是运送的重量是严格控制的,不能超过800公斤,而且快件只能放在旅客不用的大件行李处和最后一排座椅的后面。

除载客高铁列车“兼职”运送快件,“动检”高铁列车也加入了运送大军中。所谓“动检”车就是不载客,为全天高铁开行进行检查、开路的一趟空车。

今年“双11”,北京铁路局京铁物流中心专门针对电商开行了4趟电商班列(上海、广东方向各两趟),车体采用全封闭车厢,一列车一次就能运货超过300余吨。而160公里时速的货运列车在货物运输里可以称得上是“货运动车”了,快件坐上电商班列可以实现“一日达”。

顺丰快递大兴黄村铁路站点的负责人崔先生告诉北青报记者,铁路快运也加入快件运输行列,为电商提供了更多的选择。今年“双11”,他们和铁路运输的合作就比去年提升了20%到30%。

京铁物流中心副主任张金超介绍,预计快运黄金周期间该中心电商货物发送量将达13500吨,增幅将达80%,北京铁路局预留了充足的备用车。

中铁快运北京分公司副总经理孙志军也表示,高铁快运加入快递运输大军,让1600公里以内的快件运输有了新的选择方式,高铁不受天气影响、安全、准时的特质,更会成为快递投寄的保障。

据了解,“双11”期间,铁路为了抢占快运市场,针对电商推出的运输价格也优惠。高铁当日达每公斤4元,次日达每公斤3元。电商班列,一节车厢7500元,可装载23吨。

另据江苏电视台消息,上海铁路局将利用55趟列车助力电商网购物流运输,通过加强与电商和快递企业合作,推出高铁快运当日达、次晨达产品和电商班列一日达产品,涉及电子电器、服装、卫浴洁具、食品等“双11”热销品类。

今年“双11”电商黄金周期间,长三角47趟高铁快运当日达、次晨达产品涉及京沪、沪昆、杭深、郑徐、合武、胶济、京哈等7条线路,以及上海、上海虹桥、杭州东、宁波、温州南、南京南、合肥南7个车站,共覆盖沿线18个城市。8趟货物班列中,有3趟时速160公里的特快班列,5趟时速120公里的快速货物班列。

Indian e-commerce is decades behind China because their logistics, infrastructure and manufacturing base is weak. Chinese members should praise the Government because without their earlier policies companies like Alibaba would never have succeeded. Alibaba in the next five years will probably buy Amazon.
