11.11, Singles' Day of 2015: news & updates

Lack of personnel?
One busy day for Chinese policemen is on the day of college entrance exam, they will be busy driving students and sending lost ID cards. If something serious happens, it's about armed police who is thought to be part of military, but they still do something like organising tourists in national parks during public holidays.
I think that is great, to build trust with the public. In here, most Canadians do not trust police, especially black Canadians LOL
But Im off topic, back to 11.11!

JD.com Announces Singles Day Orders Up 130%,
Driven by Record Mobile Transactions

Mobile Spikes to 74% of Total Orders
WeChat and Mobile QQ Drive 52% of New JD.com Users During the Day

BEIJING, Nov. 12, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- JD.com, Inc. (Nasdaq:JD), China's largest online direct sales company, today announced record-breaking one-day results from its November 11 Singles Day sale. The 24-hour sale, which saw the number of orders increase by 130%, and an increase in GMV of more than 140%, compared to last year, was the culmination of an 11-day sales event that began on November 1.

With promotions across all categories beginning at midnight for the annual 24-hour event, JD.com saw its order volume yesterday exceed its full-day 2010 Singles Day total in just two minutes, its 2011 Singles Day total in 15 minutes and its 2012 figure in 36 minutes. At 4:54 am on 11/11, orders on JD.com had surpassed the total number of orders on Singles Day 2013 and just before noon, JD.com topped its total orders for Singles Day 2014. By 6:26 pmJD.com had received more orders than it had for the last five Singles Days combined.

During the day, 74% of total orders were placed via mobile platforms, including JD.com's native app and through Tencent's WeChat and Mobile QQ platforms, the increasingly popular social media platforms of choice among China's growing population of mobile users. More than 52% of first-time customers on JD.com during the day came from WeChat and Mobile QQ.

"Our record-breaking sales and accelerated growth for the day show that what truly matters to Chinese consumers is the quality, reliability and authenticity that only JD.com guarantees," said Haoyu Shen, CEO of JD Mall. "Across all product categories, from electronics to apparel to fresh food, we have seen tremendous growth because our customers trust JD.com to provide the highest product quality, most efficient service and fastest delivery. On mobile, our partnership with Tencent puts JD.com in front of more than half a billion WeChat and Mobile QQ users, a tremendous industry advantage that enabled us to reach and win over new customers during the sale."

Home décor, apparel and footwear continues to be one of JD.com's strongest segments, and saw the most orders out of any product category on November 11. During the day, JD.com sold more than 14 million articles of clothing and pairs of shoes, extending an exceptionally strong overall growth rate for this category. For example, Forever 21 one-day sales increased by 650% compared to Singles Day 2014.

International brands continued to gain in popularity among JD.com's shoppers, including top sellers such as Apple, Samsung, Adidas, New Balance, Columbia, The North Face, Philips, Nestle, Mead Johnson and Wyeth, among others.

JD.com released the following additional facts about its 2015 November 11 Singles Day 24-hour sales event:

  • Sales of wearable smart devices increased by 900% compared to last year's sale.
  • Orders on JD Supermarket increased 190% y-o-y, including an increase for fresh food sales of 560% and snack foods of 430%.

Wow so how much revenue combined for Singles Day?

this is just ridiculous. In Canada, the police would not respond to that call. If you make a call like that to our police, if they come over they will fine you.

I think the Police Action is Good enough.
If they don't come, maybe there will be a Domestic Violence.

I just read a piece of news saying that a cop here takes responsibility of tomb-sweeping several deceased. Guess police in China is about babysitting.

Back to topic.

Inland provinces see robust trade growth

Manufacturing industy moving away from coastal areas: expert

Some inland provinces have reported robust growth in trade volume in the first three quarters, despite the ongoing decline in the country's overall trade, according to a list compiled by the Global Times on Thursday, based on figures recently released by the provincial governments.

The total trade volume of Northwest China's Qinghai Province surged 42.6 percent year-on-year, ranking No.1 among all provinces.

Trade volume in Central China's Henan Province surged 21.2 percent year-on-year in the January-September period, while for Hubei and Hunan provinces it rose 5.7 percent and 1.3 percent year-on-year, respectively, according to data from the provincial governments.

Out of the 29 provincial governments that have so far released trade data for the first three quarters, 21 have reported negative growth, according to data compiled by the Global Times.

"The manufacturing industry has been transferring from East China to inland provinces, especially electronics and machinery manufacturing, which is partly why the central provinces are reporting higher trade growth," Tian Yun, editor-in-chief at the Macro China Information Network, told the Global Times Thursday.

Henan is home to several factories owned by Foxconn Technology Group, a major contract manufacturer for Apple Inc. The province has seen exports of mobile phones become the main driving force for its foreign trade. The export volume of mobile phones from the province totaled 97.73 billion yuan ($15.34 billion) in the first three quarters, up 35.5 percent year-on-year and accounting for 55.4 percent of the province's total exports, local newspaper Henan Daily reported on October 15.

Hubei also said that electronics are a major growth engine for its foreign trade. The value of mobile phones exported in the first three quarters tripled compared with the same period in 2014, and exports of tablets surged by 98.9 percent year-on-year during the period, according to a post on the province's website on October 15.

However, experts noted that a low base of comparison is a key reason for the impressive growth in trade volume in these provinces at present.

The traditionally strong provinces in foreign trade all reported negative growth in the first three quarters. For instance, the total trade volume for South China's Guangdong Province dropped 4.3 percent year-on-year in January-September and that of East China's Zhejiang dropped 2.6 percent.

China's coastal provinces, which rely heavily on trade for growth, are now trying to restructure their economy. In a post on October 21, the Guangdong provincial government said that the province's services sector now accounts for a higher percentage of its GDP growth compared to 2014 and its manufacturing sector is also moving up the value chain.

"But economic restructuring and upgrading is a slow process," said Tian, adding that it will take time before the restructuring starts to boost growth.

China's exporters are facing tough times because of rising labor costs, lackluster external demand and the stronger yuan, experts said. In the first 10 months, China's total trade volume dropped 8.1 percent year-on-year to 19.93 trillion yuan ($3.13 trillion), with exports falling 2 percent and imports diving by 15.2 percent, according to customs data released Sunday.

The State Council has released a series of measures to boost trade this year, including simplifying customs procedures and improving financing support. Recent media reports have said that the government is considering more measures to support innovative business models.

But even with such measures, trade growth is unlikely to turn positive this year, Liu Xuezhi, an analyst with Bank of Communications, told the Global Times Thursday.

"The supportive measures should be directed toward traders whose businesses represent an improvement in the trade structure," Liu noted.

I started a thread a while ago, on this very topic of e-commerce in rural India. The article I posted was written by an Indian, and he highly recommend Alibaba's "Taobao Village" model, where farmers utilize the infrastructure and Alibaba's service to turn their village into a rural e-commerce mini center.

But again, you need adequate infrastructure like roads, electricity, and reliable network, and then you need speedy delivery service like Cainiao, Shunfeng, Yuantong, etc, who promise same day or overnight delivery.

Agree. That is why I said the issue is much more fundamental and deep rooted than just time lag. It is a whole social structure of a society. As much as I wish the best for India, I don't see the possibility that India will be where China is in 15 years, not by a long shot.
Our city is connected with Rail and National Highway like many other such places. The logistics backbone is pretty shit in India because they don't really make much money and the investments is miniscule.I have more faith in India Post than Courier companies.

Your city is connected to railway and national highway, but why the e-commerce sites don't deliver to your postal code? Do you get free shipping from Amazon?

Shipping is around Rs. 40 if the order is less than Rs.499 ,otherwise it's free. Most of the e-commerce sites don't have a logistics points they rely on sellers to ship their own orders just like eBay.

Same here. Tmall (the major player of 11.11) calls for flagship shops in Tmall to send their own parcels. Amazon in China is like JD.com which has their own logistics system. In China many people trust private delivery giants more, they can ensure same day delivery or 24h delivery. eBay has already disappeared in China.
