Why Aussie students are flocking to Indonesia

Australian university students studying abroad are choosing Indonesia over 40 other Asian countries, under a government initiative.

Young people are lapping up the chance to learn the local language, embrace the culture, and in typical student fashion make the most of the cheap cuisine.

The Australian Government's New Colombo Plan (NCP) offers undergraduates scholarships and grants to live and study in the Indo Pacific region, with the goal of lifting knowledge of our nearest neighbours.

Since 2014 when the NCP began, 7,619 Aussie students have chosen Indonesia as their study destination, followed closely behind by China which has hosted 7,075 students from down under, and India with 5,492 students.

For Canberra's Cam Allan it was an obvious next step after taking Indonesian language lessons in Canberra.

"It's the biggest Muslim country in the world, one of the biggest democracies, one of the most diverse in terms of language and culture," Cam said.

"It's almost like the gap year I never had except a little more gruelling."

While Sydney's Nikki Singh wanted to learn about other cultures for her psychology degree.
"With natural disasters that occur at a higher frequency than many places in the world we really need more mental health professionals to be able to deal with communities," she said.

The friends study in Yogyakarta which is known as Java's student city.

Classes in the morning are often followed by afternoons of sightseeing.

A meal can cost as little as a dollar but there's plenty more to like.

"Indonesian people are some of the friendliest most warm people I've ever encountered," Nikki said.

9News was invited to spend a day with the pair on campus at Gadjah Mada University where they've made plenty of friends.

"They are so open minded and they are easy going," Indonesian student Renno Renjaan said.
The number of Aussie students in Indonesia could swell even more in coming years with the free trade agreement - expected to be ratified by parliaments in both countries soon - paving the way for Australian universities to open their own campuses in Indonesia.

'Voice of Germany' favorite is newcomer from Indonesia
Date 06.11.2019

Claudia Emmanuela Santoso moved from Indonesia to Germany in 2018. The talented singer might just win a German reality talent show, "The Voice of Germany."

All four coaches turned around in their swivel chairs to check out the singer during the blind audition phase of the most recent casting for The Voice of Germany — and that is unusual. Prominent musicians themselves, the coaches try to win young talents for their respective teams to win the show. In the first rounds, the jurors sit with their backs to the participants; the singers' voices alone are to convince the jurors to pick a singer for their team.

At her first appearance a few weeks ago, Claudia Emmanuela Santoso got to choose which team she wanted to join, each headed by a star. Rea Garvey, Sido, Alice Merton and Mark Forsterall hit their buzzers when the 18-year-old sang "Never Enough" from the film The Greatest Showman. Her vocal power convinced them all. "We can go straight to the finale," said Rea Garvey. In the end, Santoso chose the team headed by pop musician Alice Mertons ("No Roots"). "You rock my world," an emotional Merton said.

From German language classes straight to the stage

Santoso is the hands-down favorite ahead of the finals — the talent show is in its ninth season — on November 10. The young woman left the Indonesian city of Cirebon for Germany in the summer of 2018 and soon signed up for the casting show.

She only took German language classes in Indonesia for three months, Santoso told DW, adding that she and her cousin, who also attended the class, actually watched The Voice of Germany in their home country. "I thought that if one day I live in Germany, I would like to take part in the auditions."

She was enrolled in a music school at the age of four, took piano and violin lessons and trained her voice. The young singer has been posting clips of herself on her Instagram account for quite a while. Her success on TV has garnered her more than 120,000 subscribers.

Is she a robot or a machine?

A video of her first performance on The Voice of Germany garnered her more than 21 million views on YouTube. Round after round, she cemented her great talent. "I have the feeling that you are a robot or a machine... How can you sing so perfectly? It's unbelievable," said German rapper Sido. The young singer — who laughs with glee when showered with praise, flashing her braces — has certainly won the hearts of the coaches and the audience alike.

People in her hometown of Cirebon flock to public venues to watch her performances in the German casting show. The Indonesian daily Kompas reported about Claudia Emmanuela Santoso, and the Indonesian Consul General in Frankfurt congratulated her on Twitter on her success.

"I hope to learn a lot by participating in The Voice of Germany," the young talent said, adding she hopes to make new connections, meet people and get to know the entertainment industry. "The most important thing for me is to create something, my own song or a single," she said. "I want to give my own concerts — but I also want to continue my studies." Santoso studies music in Munich.

In Munich, the young woman is active in an Indonesian community — that helps against feeling homesick. She moved to Germany alone, without her family. They watched her first performances from home via video messenger, but for the finals on Sunday, the family is heading to Germany to support Claudia Emmanuella Santoso, hoping for a great triumph.

BMKG launches expedition Indonesia PRIMA to Indian Ocean
Monday, 11/11/2019

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) launched expedition Indonesia PRIMA to the Indian Ocean for Nov 12-Dec 10, 2019, to further explore the less-identifiable depth of 70,560,000-square-kilometer waters, chairwoman Dwikorita Karnawati stated here, Monday.

"We still have several mysteries, black holes in the Indian Ocean," she remarked while adding that the expedition aimed at gaining a better understanding of the air-sea interaction in the Indian Ocean, mainly by utilizing a sonar-based multibeam echo sounder (MBS) tracking system.

Karnawati expounded that the device will facilitate researchers to study the Indian Ocean's bathymetry or the underwater profile in the seafloor. As a key factor of biological oceanography, the results of bathymetric surveys will enable researchers to measure the depth of a water body along with its underwater features.

The depth and seafloor's characteristics will further reveal information, one of which includes organisms inhabiting the seabed of the Indian Ocean.

The Indonesia PRIMA expedition, an abbreviation of the Indonesia Program Initiative on Maritime Observation and Analysis, was a multi-year program established by Indonesia's BMKG and the Maryland-based the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), an American scientific agency under the United States Department of Commerce.

In addition to conducting research on Indian Ocean’s bathymetry, the expedition team was tasked with renewing some buoys or moorings in the waters. Buoy is a multi-purpose floating device that measures an entire range of weather variables, including wind speed, direction, and air and water temperature, as well as detects and launches an early warning system of tsunami.

The expedition team, comprising two NOAA marine experts, 12 BMKG researchers, three scholars, and four experts of the Assessment and Application of Technology Agency, will sail with a research vessel KR Baruna Jaya I for at least a month.

Indonesia reaches AFC U-19 finals
Dicky Christanto Wulandaru - The Jakarta Post - Mon, November 11, 2019 / 10:41 am

The Indonesian U-19 soccer team has secured a spot in the 2020 AFC U-19 finals after a match against North Korea ended 1-1 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

Indonesia’s Bagus Kahfi scored the team’s only goal after Kim Kwang Chong made a goal for the opponent.

The match saw both teams attempting to break the others’ defense. Indonesian coach Fakhri Husaini replaced some of the players, substituting Supriadi and Brylian Aldama for the seemingly exhausted Serdy and Theo Numberi as reported by pssi.org.

Indonesia will compete in the finals, which will be held in Uzbekistan in October next year, after securing 7 points in two victories and one draw. Besides Indonesia, the other qualifying teams are Malaysia, Laos and Vietnam.

However, the Indonesian squad is likely to continue its journey without coach Fakhri as he announced his resignation after the match.

Fakhri said he would return to work in Bontang, East Kalimantan. He said he hoped the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) would hire a local coach to replace him.

“Don’t underestimate local coaches. No one understands Indonesian players like local coaches," he said.

They usually dont bother to serve Halal foods but most foreigner who come to Indonesia is come from non Muslim countries so they tend to come to such areas , to cater the foreign Muslim needs government usually give advice to them just to come to your average local food vendor and not to come to the likes of Chinatown or the likes (we got Koreatown, and little Tokyo area)

So how do we as muslim tell the diffrence? Are there government markings on non halal products like it is in other Muslim countries?

By "we" I mean non local tourists

Generally, it is very easy to find halal products everywhere in Indonesia. Around 98-99% food and beverage products that are legally sold in Indonesia have halal certificate, so it is quite save.

However, if you are looking for cooked food (in restaurant, foodstall etc) make sure they have sign that says "Halal" or "Umum" at front, especially if you are strolling around non-muslim majority places. Your save bet is going to the Javanese or Padang restaurant for halal food.

Is she a German national or Indonesian national ? How come she can compete in that competition ?

She is (still) Indonesian national. She go to Germany to study music.

I think one's nationality is not a requirement in this kind of competition. Also, she isn't the first Indonesian to compete in foreign contest.

Several years ago she was competing in a local talent show on TV here but failed, even received harsh comment from one of the jury. But the irony is while she now a champion and make us proud, the said jury who mocked her performance is now in jail. LOL. :D

LOL Indonesian idol judges dump her, this will hurt the credibility of the show.

I also dont like judges in Indonesian idols or Dangdut Indosiar who like to talk harshly to the participants. I dont get it, where is our old culture (Indonesia bangsa yg ramah tamah), even I dont see any judges in The Voice USA ever talk nasty to the participants there.
