Turkish Atomic Energy Agency (TAEK) is working on a detailed study for the construction permit for Akkuyu nuclear power plant (NPP).

The NPP is to be constructed by Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation, Rosatom within the next six months, Anadolu Agency reported Wednesday.

According to the announcement from the company, TAEK issued the approval certificate to AEM-technology, the machine engineering division of Russia's Rosatom (Atomenergomash) on Sept. 19. Rosatom is the first of the NPP equipment manufacturers to obtain an official manufacturing certificate.

Turkey's first nuclear power plant will be constructed in the country's southern province of Mersin on the Mediterranean coast. The plant has an operational date set for the first reactor by 2023 and the plant is expected to be up and running at full capacity by 2025.

Akkuyu nuclear power plant's (NPP) construction will start at the end of this year or at the beginning of next year at the latest, Turkey's Energy and Natural Resources Minister Berat Albayrak in an energy event in the southern city of Antalya on Wednesday.

Albayrak stressed that in the studies even the slightest risk will be addressed in Turkey, a country new to nuclear technology. All works for localization have already started, he underlined.

On Oct. 4, TAEK approved AEM-technology as an equipment manufacturer for the Akkuyu NPP.

The deal was signed in 2013 and I am still hearing this story. Which begs the question, what have they been doing for 4 years? Environmental impact report should take no longer than a year.

excellent question.

Educating people in nuclear science?

Still under "study". This has been the case for decades. Wishful thinking.

The land has been prepared and straightened for the construction to commence.

Russia has viewed Turkey as a threat to its national security for a 1000 years -- up until July 15th, 2016, when the US/Gulenist-organized the deadly terrorist attack on the people of Turkey and its democratically elected president took place.

What did you expect? Some habits die hard. Just be glad that it's starting this year. Same thing with the S-400. It was as difficult for the Russians to agree to deliver the S-400 to Turkey as it was Turkey to flip off the US/Europe/NATO and go with a strategic Russian weapon system.

Turkey's opting for S-400 means two things, and it's the second thing the West is so concerned about.

1. Turkey will have a decent air defense system that can potentially pose a threat to US air dominance in the vicinity of Turkey.

2. Turkey has just declared that it doesn't see Russia as an enemy (unlike the view in the US/NATO/Europe) in the foreseeable future. Needless to say, this is what gets the West's panties in a bunch, not the SAM systems themselves.

This Russian plane was shut down by a FETO-member pilot who took his orders from Gulen/USA, not Turkey.

If Russia wasn't sure of this, they wouldn't have just sold Turkey these:

just explaining why delay happened..

Turkey should work on expediting the construction of the Sinop NPP with Japan/France as well because Russia still has a lot of reasons to drag its feet with the Akkuyu:
  • Turkey and Russia completely disagree on Assad.
  • Turkey and Russia don't exactly see eye-to-eye regarding Kurdish independence. They're only against the idea because the Kurds are currently under US control.
  • Turkey is still a NATO member.
  • Turkey doesn't recognize Crimea as Russian. In fact Erdogan just gave full support to Poroshenko during his visit to Ukraine a couple days ago.
  • Turkey supports Ukraine's NATO bid.
  • Turkey allows NATO ships access to the Black Sea (little restriction).
  • Turkey doesn't recognize Russian separatist regions within Georgia.
  • Turkey recently introduced new restrictions on Russian agricultural goods entering Turkey, which Russia immediately replicated against Turkey.
  • Turkey and Russia disagree regarding the status of Karabakh and the so-called "Armenian Genocide".
  • Turkey still poses a long-term strategic threat to Russia through the Turkic republics.
  • Turkey wants more autonomy and freedoms for the Turkic and Muslim peoples in Russia (like Tatars, etc) which Russia doesn't allow.
  • So on and so forth.

Actually both country wanna has got close relationships but old balances prevents. If Russia get close Turkey all world balances will be change as positive for Asia and ME but USA and West will be lost their power, thats why nobody wants Turkey and Russia has got close relationship. what they think no problem for us just we has to work with Russia for common issues.
