France in advanced talks to sell nuclear reactors to Saudi Arabia

Xavier Orsat, president of French electricity company Edf, said the company was in talks with several countries on selling nuclear reactors, including Saudi Arabia, China, India and South Africa.

"We are in talks with several countries on new private contracts, including Saudi Arabia and South Africa," the newspaper quoted a report by the Riyadh Post, quoting Orsat as telling reporters at a news conference.

The French company also hopes that its contacts with the authorities in South Africa and Saudi Arabia will produce good results that will allow the company to export its nuclear expertise.

EDF is leading in Europe. It would be a very good choice. We will have to see. The South Koreans (KEPCO) are doing very well in UAE (Barakah). It will either be EDF, KEPCO or the Chinese. All 3 very good choices IMO. The most important thing is this development below:

I was hoping Egypt would've got its contract from either the French or the Japanese or even the joint French/Japanese co. instead of the Russian one. Their respective safety records through the years is what makes me apprehensive of the Russian vs the French. Hopefully things have changed for the better.

To the contrary bro, the Russian nuclear reactors are of the latest generation and have special safety features now something like core protector and are very advanced in Nuclear technology where their reactors won American and European awards.. The French reactors are quite good but not of the latest generation, they have encountered many problems in the building schedules in Finland for example.. Now they have themselves resorted to Russia to try to improve their delivery schedules and much more.. The Egyptian experts knew about all this stuff and made a wise decision.. not only that, they got ToT, education and spent fuel to keep..and much more advantages..
The UAE also made a wise decision to contract the SKs, look at the record time they have built the first reactor who is already ready and going through additional rounds for safety procedures..
It will be wise for KSA to give its first contract to SK, to get its first reactors a.s.a.p, and then either the Chinese, Japanese or Russians for phase 2, 3 and 4.. I won't count on France till the 4th phase, when first, they will have their new generation reactor they are working on ready and matured, and second concerns their building speed..

Go for Chinese and they soon will be market leaders and they are producing good product. They have now producing more reactor then any country.

I would be very surprised if the final choice would be Russia but that is just a feeling that I have. Maybe the upcoming visit will result in a different scenario and maybe (it would not surprise me knowing previous history) we know little about what is truly going on?

Just yesterday, I've read an article on Russian-Arabian relations. It says that USSR was the first country to recognize the independence of Saudi Arabia. Then relations got worse, but first ever visit of the king to Russia is without doubt an epochal milestone.
Russia is the world leader in the construction of nuclear reactors, approximately 40% on the world market. 8 reactors are being built in Russia and 34 abroad. At the moment, Russia is building or prepearing the costruction of reactors in Hungary, China, Belorussua, India, Finland, Turkey, Iran.
The portfolio of the Russian company Rosatom is over 140 billion dollars, so I would not be surprised if Saudi Arabia chooses the best.

Russia/USSR and the Arab world (at least large parts of it) had cordial ties and Arab-Russian (in this cause Caucasus) are also several millennia old. In fact Arabs had a several century long presence in parts of today's Russia (Caucasus) let alone the former USSR Republics.

Lastly, KSA has signed many memorandums of understanding in relation to nuclear power with the likes of China, South Korea, Japan and if I am not wrong France as well. Apart from Russia as mentioned earlier. KSA might opt (my theory) for more than 1 nation.

In fact one of the best medieval descriptions of early Kievan Rus' were Arab chroniclers employed by the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates and Empires.
