Iran to Buy Russian-Made Amphibious Planes
"Orion amphibious plane can land and take off on water and ice," Vasili Dobrowolski, the head of Russia's mechanical assembly plant, was quoted by Ria Novosti news agency as saying.
"Iran has voiced interest in buying the plane and a contract has been inked between the two sides," he added.
Dobrowolski said that the newly-developed Orion-20 planes are due to be manufactured for Iran, adding that the aircraft is much stronger than peers in the market.
Iran in January 2016 unveiled the first amphibious plane manufactured by the country's experts and engineers in a ceremony participated by Vice-President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari.
The 6-seat amphibious aircraft was unveiled in the Southern port city of Bandar Abbas.
"Having built this marine plane, the Islamic Republic of Iran attained the technology to design and build them after the US, Russia and Germany and similar products manufactured in other countries like China," Sattari said.
He underlined that given Iran's long borders, the country needs such hi-tech planes for patrolling missions.
An amphibious aircraft or amphibian is an aircraft that can take off and land on both land and water.
Fixed-wing amphibious aircraft are seaplanes (flying boats and floatplanes) that are equipped with retractable wheels, at the expense of extra weight and complexity, plus diminished range and fuel economy compared to planes designed for land or water only.
Some amphibians are fitted with reinforced keels which act as skis, allowing them to land on snow or ice with their wheels up and are dubbed tri-phibians
