RAWALPINDI: In line with government’s directives, the police have started a surveillance of people belonging to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and considering issuing them chip-based national identity cards equipped with security features.

A senior police official told Dawn that strict surveillance of more than 5,400 people belonging to the tribal areas and living in the Rawalpindi division had been started. He said the police were also considering containing them to a specific place so that they could be keep under a watch.

He said the whereabouts of all such individuals were being gathered in Rawalpindi and three other districts. Of the total individuals from the tribal areas, 4,300 were living/doing business in the Rawalpindidistrict, 610 in Attock, 245 in Jhelum and 280 in Chakwal.

“The objective of compiling the data of all such individuals is to keep vigilance on them,” the senior police official said. “Police are also considering containing them to a specific place and issuing them chip-based identity cards.”

He said the police were also getting biometric verifications of suspicious people during the joint operation being conducted by the army, police and intelligence agencies after the fresh wave of terrorist attacks in the country.

“Any individual found without the national identity card is detained by the police,” he said.

Separately, the police sealed seven bus stands in Pirwadhai for the lack of security arrangements in accordance with the standard operating procedure on Monday night. But the police withdrew from bus stands after about 12 hours.

Haji Zahoor Ahmed, the chairman of the transport union, told Dawn that the police started raiding the private bus stands on Monday night and sealed seven bus stands except the general bus terminal.

He said one of the private bus stands that were sealed had 16 close circuit television cameras (CCTV), four armed security guards and other arrangements as directed by the police.

Due to the sealing of the bus stands, hundreds of people had to face trouble as they kept on shuttling between Pirwadhai, Faizabad and Soan bus stands to reach their destinations. After observing the situation, the police unsealed the bus stands.

Mr Ahmed said when the attention of senior police officials was drawn towards the Pirwadhai general bus stand, which lacked proper security measures, they only said it was a government bus stand.

Racial profiling at a local level... and when the world does it ... people go crazy.

Yes.

It's utterly stupid, there's no need for this, that it was even considered is idiotic.

Then just say that instead. No need for this "Punjabistan" nonsense.

And that every ethnicity but Punjabi is under suspicion in Pakistan, Karachiites are MQM/RAW agents, Balochis are BLA traitors, Pakhtuns are terrorists, Sindhis get off scot-free weirdly, but hey, PPP's corrupt and evil

You're grossly exgagerting here. And in any case, the problems you are citing have much more to do with politics and power than ethnicity. I'll just leave it there.

You think Punjabi get off scot-free? Wtf do you think why majority of us hate Panama sharif? You think we've forgotten model town massacre? Your exaggerating no Punjabi thinks everyone in other ethnic groups are under-suspicion. Reality will be useful. There's no point in having to bring in ethnicity considering it has nothing to do with it in the first place.

Nawaz is Punjabi.
Leaders of this country are always from Punjab.

Only 2000 people for operation in entire Punjab, more rangers than that in Karachi, and we're not even one fifth of the size. Calling it as I see it, the Punjabi bias is real.

Think I'll put up a thread detailing it, most people (Read Punjabis) don't even realise the bias that other ethnicities feel in this country.

Every terrorist suffers
Awam even don't want to register FIR in this gang's office, due to fear of their terror.
Some ugly fishes make the whole pond Dirty
Just we need to kick thohe bad A**es and the rest will be history

@truthseer @WaLeEdK2 Please. Its not about Punjabi or muhajir, both who are at the top of the Pakistani hierarchy yet keep asking for extra rights and don't recognize their elevated position of the Pakistani map. If these two groups grow sensible half the countries problems will disappear. The issue however is terrorism which is a national (Pakistani) problem. Lets not turn a national problem into an ethnic matter. Were people in Lahore daily being killed by PPPP/MQM mafias. Lahore is much safer than Karachi and there is a reason. Operations obviously will be conducted in regions where there is a problem. We notice there is a terrorism problem with the Punjabi taliban and action is being taken in Punjab too. Lets not turn national issues into ethnic ones. We have traitors like Syed Jamaluddin for that. Lets not follow him down that road.

Lol you should be fucking happy that rangers are deployed in big numbers. I don't know what you're complaining about. When was the last time a bomb exploded in Karachi? Target killing is down to an all time low in years. We wish we could have more rangers like you guys. It more bias for safety towards YOU. You're getting A LOT more benefits than us in this aspect so please don't sit on your computer playing victim for no reason at all.

Imagine if all the Pakistani Punjabi origin people living in the UK were put under surveillance

People from Lahore should be put under surveillance in KP because they have ridiculously high rates of throwing acids on the faces of women?.

surveillance is fine not an issue but look at this news. It is pathetic that Punjab says "the police were also considering containing them to a specific place so that they could be keep under a watch."

wowwwwwwwwwww this is the ASHOLE KIND OF THING IF DONE BY PUNJAB because you guys never limited Afghans to specific places and you are now trying to treat Pakistanis as refugees in their own country.

I don't think this is going to go well with Tribals-

1st they have never been provided with proper livelihood and forced to live in 17th century-
2nd they have been displaced due to Military campaign-
3r their houses have been destroyed by artillery and air bombing plus FATA Laws-
4th no province except KPK gave them refuge-
5th Now they are viewed suspiciously-

I don't think any lesson has been learned from East Pakistan- I have seen these people weep and narrate their sorry state in the refugee camps of Bannu- Sorry to say Pakistan has been a total failure for these people-

I think this is going a little overboard. Like the FCR... we cannot treat everyone from a particular region as a terrorist. In fact laws like FCR and collective responsibilities act is responsible for creating a pro ethnic and even a pro tribal identity in FATA where loyalty to tribe and not even ethnicity is paramount with the tribes fighting each other at times. A lot of this tribal infighting goes unreported. We need to take steps to bring civilization into FATA and development is important but calling all FATIAN's terrorists including lashkaris who risked their lives to fight talibans is not a good move. I understand the motivation as a lot of terrorists are from FATA but tact is needed, not aggression. By this logic even US can go after all terrorists because most suicide bombings are done by muslims-deny it all you want....

FATA needs development, not isolation and a type of suspect treatment. With a literacy rate of 22% and unemployment over 60% we are asking for trouble in FATA but government has done nothing for the region. Development is needed but the entire system currently is flawed. Merger of FATA and elimination of FCR Collective responsibilities act has been a legitimate demand of the local people. But no one listens to FATIAN's. @Fawad Masīd @naveedullahkhankhattak
100% agree with you..

that's what happens when incompetent people run the affairs of state and recruit tanidars/Police walas on political grounds to serve them 24/7...it's sad to know that the pamphlet which they issued is correct not a faked pamphlet !!

- Racist comment on this thread alone is eye opening !! never expected that some folks will defend the move !! don't want to tag/quote these idiots, i cant change their opinion nor it's of any benefit...

Is not it like Indians who see Kashmiris as terrorists ? It is not going to be good for Pakistan.
