BEIRUT: France's far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen sparked controversy Tuesday during her brief visit to Lebanon when she refused to wear a headscarf to meet the country's top Sunni Muslim cleric.

On her last day in the small Mediterranean country, Le Pen arrived at Sheikh Abdellatif Deryan's office in Beirut and was offered a white shawl to cover her blonde hair. The National Front candidate promptly refused and made a brief statement to journalists before leaving. "The highest Sunni authority in the world had not had this requirement, so I have no reason to," Le Pen said, referring to her 2015 visit to Al-Azhar, the prestigious Egyptian institution of Sunni Islamic learning.

She said she had told Deryan's office on Monday that she would not don a headscarf: "They did not cancel the meeting, so I thought they would accept that I will not wear the scarf." "They wanted to impose this on me, to present me with a fait accompli. Well, no one presents me with a fait accompli," the candidate said. Deryan heads Dar al-Fatwa, the highest Sunni authority in Lebanon.

In a statement on Tuesday, the body said "its press office had informed the presidential candidate, through one of her assistants, of the need to cover her head when she meets his eminence, according to the protocol assumed by Dar al-Fatwa". "Dar al-Fatwa officials were surprised by her refusal to conform to this well-known rule," the statement said. Fewer than a dozen protesters gathered near Lebanon's Zaytuna Bay on Tuesday afternoon to protest against Le Pen's visit. "From Beirut to Damascus to Paris to Washington, fascists flock together," one placard read.

One banner read "Fascists out!", and demonstrators carried pictures of Le Pen and US President Donald Trump. Tuesday is Le Pen's last day in Lebanon, where she met a foreign head of state for the first time -- President Michel Aoun. The FN leader, whose party takes an anti-immigrant stance, also met Prime Minister Saad Hariri, a Sunni Muslim, and Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil.

Islamic dress is a hot-button issue in France, where the full-face veil is banned in public places. Le Pen's deputy Florian Philippot swiftly lauded her controversial move. "A magnificent message of liberty and emancipation sent to the women of France and of the world," Philippot wrote on Twitter. Shunned by European leaders over her party's stance on immigration and its anti-EU message, Le Pen's meeting with Aoun aimed to boost her international credibility.

France had mandate power over both Lebanon and Syria during the first half of the 20th century. Le Pen has met few top foreign officials since taking control of the FN in 2011. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has refused to meet with her. After leaving Deryan's office, Le Pen headed to Bkerkeh, north of Beirut, to meet Maronite Catholic Beshara Rai. She also met Samir Geagea, who heads the Lebanese Forces party and is a fierce opponent of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

I am not a fan of her for her certain statemnts but on this issue i think she is right

Naturally this means that when I go to France. I don't need to get visa or abide by Laws of the Government. They are French laws and we should not obey them. This shows how torn the minds of these western people is. Considering everything to be a forced full act. Rather somethings are meant to be complied with rather becoming and *****le and rejecting. If you are like this then sorry you can not even comply with your spouse rest aside the whole world. We should learn to be respectful of others rather then to be hateful and abusive. French and Italians should learn to respect other cultures or they will be deprived of it themselves.

Wrong. She did not go Lebanon to ask for welfare money, to live there or get asylum. She came as a politician.

Respectful of others?

Is this respectful of others?

This is in London!

We are simply sick of this.

Its an easy thing. I´m italian. My girl is italian. Italian women do not cover their head. You invite us as guest so you have to respect us the way we are.

If you demand my girl to cover herself up you insult me and her. You disrespect us. You demand that we submit into something we arent and sorry this wont gonna happen.

If italians come and ask for asylum and welfare in pakistan we can debate your claim.

Marine le Pen is a great example and role model regarding that.

@Vergennes @flamer84

Thats no controversy. Its common sense. Marine is no muslim. She is in no way bound by the faith and made clear before the visit that she will not cover her head.

She is European. In Europe women dont cover their head. It is that simple. She did not came as a migrant but as a politician.

German defense minister Ursula von der Leyen did the same in Saudi Arabia. They brought her something to cover her head and she said she will not cover up and none of her female assistants will cover

I had the same thing with my girlfriend when we visited Istanbul. Our group was basicly forced to visit the Blue Mosque before we enter Hagia Sophia. My girlfriend said she will under no circumstance cover her head. We asked to stay outside but tehy said we must go or the group would be divided...

I told her to do it or we get into trouble but knew she will do something...So she covered up but once inside took it off. We had a little discussion but she kept it off and well you dont discuss with italian women.

In the end i see this critical that you are basicly forced that women cover up. Its opression and i fully support Marine decission to not follow this.
its ok to stand your ground and not cover head as your gf did, but its disrespectful not to wear it once inside... you dont want to wear, then dont go inside.. its as simple.
Its customary to remove shoes when you enter house in east(india, china).. you want to keep your shoes, go somebody else's house. When I visit somebody, I adhere to custom of my host, if I find it unreasonable, I will leave instead of sneaking in.
As to politicians, they are within their rights to take a stand.. nothing wrong.

In Marine's case, no one is forcing her to meet the top Sunni cleric.

Oppression? If I choose to go to a Church and am asked to follow a dress code, would that be oppression?

As I said, cheap political maneuverings.

We did not want to go into the mosque. We said clearly that we want stay outside. They forced us in and said the group would be divided otherwise. Sorry but your argument doesnt work here.
oh i though you sneaked in... obviously if you dont go and others do, your group will be divided..
in life when you take a principled stand, you always face some hardship... or lose opportunity...

Why go to meet the top cleric of a nation if you don't want to adhere to protocol.

To cover head is not protocol of any western culture. And since when is this man the "top cleric" of lebanon? Last time i checked the country is almost 40% christian. The christian cleric did not want her to cover and they had a great meeting btw.

so basically she implies that you need to insult others to prove yourself and respecting others is bull**it. Sorry but every religion teaches to be respectful to others. those who don't follow this simple instruction should not expect to be respected.

Your going to his home

No one asked her to wear a scarf as she entered Lebanon or Egypt, nor was German minister as she entered Saudi these are state visits

but if your going to someone's home then its your choice atleast respect the rules of that home or don't turn up its very disrespectful

What happens on the street is more open you are more free to choosh

but someone's home rules whatever they are ie no shoes, head covered, no swearing, no shouting etc should be respected by the guest

very rude!!

Hating Muslims and Islam has become a vote winner in every democracy from USA to India. Europe will be no exception. Britain may escape this because the 'Establishment' in the UK hates everyone that it sees as a threat to itself and that includes right wing extremists which are usually infiltrated and destroyed from within. The BNP and EDL are case in point. The Queen's Peace is what is important here. Also, the British character shuns overt displays of zealousness and this is one of the reasons why British fascists have always had a hard time becoming mainstream. Even UKIP has gone as far as it could and stagnated. I dont live in France so I cant comment much about the French but from what people tell me France is racist to the core and they arent even ashamed of it.

I agree and its part of the reason why I feel muslim states need to get their act together

not embrace the far radical islamic right but more general right

liberalism and secularism is dying a dogs death in the west so we need to shun it to promote our own ideologies
