So basically America is saying, China can keep the islands we have built, and we are free to build more islands without any repercussions.

Interesting that these standard flyovers are the most they are willing to do, which is basically saying they have no intention to stop us.

Unless the US can stop China's construction by bombing it, China will fully militarise the islands and station fighter jets and strategic bombers to project PLA air power away from the mainland and also station air defences on the islands to protect those air assets.

WASHINGTON — China has complained to the United States about a B-52 bomber flying over its airspace last week in the area of a contested island in the South China Sea, the Pentagon said Friday.

"The United States routinely conducts B-52 training missions throughout the region, including over the" sea," said Cmdr. Bill Urban, a Pentagaon spokesman. "These missions are designed to maintain readiness and demonstrate our commitment to fly, sail, and operate anywhere allowed under international law.

"The Chinese have raised concerns with us about the flight path of a recent training mission," Urban said. "We are looking into the matter. Beyond that, we will not comment on the substance of our diplomatic exchanges."

China has been increasing its presence in the region over the last decade, and neighboring nations, such as Vietnam and the Philippines have protested. The United States has moved more troops and ships into the region, too, as well as conducting the B-52 training runs.

The Pentagon is investigating why one of two B-52s flew closer than planned to Cuarteron Reef in the Spratly Islands, a region where China and its neighbors are squabbling over territorial rights.

Flying a non-stealth bomber within 2 miles of the islands will put you within range of virtually every type of surface-to-air missile imaginable. It's a pretentious display of bravado that has no application in wartime. In fact, it endangers the B-52. If you have the balls, use the Ohio SSGN and launch a barrage of Tomahawk cruise missiles and wipe out the islands. But thats only if you have balls.

The US want to make money with the arm sells, well why not sell them state of the art nuclear subs, F-35 and Burke destroyers? Billions can be made so why this pity arm sales? It's like we can sell candies to Taiwan without worrying what China thinks while South Korea and Japan can enjoy 5-course dinner.

You have a mutual defense treaty with the Philippines, and you ran away when they were losing territory to China in 2012. Same when Ukraine was losing territory to Russia in 2014.

We realized long ago that burning through our resources and polluting our land/sea/water so others in the world can live comfy lives is extremely short sighted. We have to live here a long time.
