Is cheating in exams a sin? Can it be considered haraam?

@dravidianhero

Don't get me wrong buddy, but did not you declare somewhere that you had converted to Islam for sometime? When you were depressed and lost and what not? I appreciate the evil you have highlighted but I don't believe that it was Muslim girls only in that exam hall that would have been cheating? Come on half of hall is non Muslim and only cheats are Muslims :D there must be some other too, try if you remember some? :)

Anyways you have highlighted a social evil that has plagued our countries irrespective of what faith we follow. Just remember a cheat has no faith not even in himself / herself otherwise he / she won't be cheating.:)

As I have a close and jovial relation with those girls, they don't take such matters to heart.

And if you have such relationship with cheats, you should have told them long before that cheating in exams is not healthy and what are its consequences. Why wait and bring in faith when you saw them cheating?

I ignored him mate..you too ignore him...I wrote the reason how a child who doesn't even know basics of maths enters tenth standard and how he is able to pass it in the above post...
Nowdays, mutual respect seem absent in population.Be it teacher, soldier, scholar or researcher...they are not getting the respect they deserve.I guess that nowdays parents are not focusing in teaching morals to our children. What they are doing is just getting jobs and fulfilling their demands.

I teach MS (by course work or mixed mode), MBBS, and MMed students and obviously invigilate them too. In Malaysia, there is no such thing as cheating. I have not experienced in past 5 years at-least.

Poor invigilation. He was attention seeker, trying to tell others that he is in-charge and should be noticed.
How could you teach MBBS? you are virologist aren't you?
Do mean to say that you teach MBBS research students about virology?
I remember that you have told me that you have taught in Pakistan.Any interesting case which you would like to share?:D

How could a virologist teach MBBS? Why not? my basic degree is in Biochemistry, PhD in Molecular Microbiology, Post-Doc in Molecular Virology. I teach MBI i.e. Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Immunology.

I meant to ask that various MBBS students which are researching over specific disease do come to geneticists, microbiologists etc.In our department, there were some MBBS students who arrived for short courses in genetics.

Obviously if someone hasnt suffered at the hands of those 'soldiers' then they wont do respect dramas then whoelse will.
Such shame despite so many atrocious incidents in past weeks ppl still cannot even have a thin streak of light flow through their minds.
Anyhoo.

Here it is different. I do not know about Pakistan for year 2000 was the last year I taught MBBS students at Aga Khan University and back then, yes, students did come for short research projects. Here, no research in MBBS, plain theory and clinical attachments. MMED, a 4 years Masters in Medicine program has some element of research in addition to extensive clinical attachments. MMED is sort of specialization but of-course nothing like FRCS or MRCP, or kind of specialization we get to see in States.

There were only Muslim girls in the class as only Muslims would take special Telugu(even though many of them can speak perfect Telugu).

Even if there were Hindu students, I wouldn't use religion to bring them to my way...the reason is Hindus don't take things like Hell, heaven and sin seriously...many Hindus pray to God only for materialistic benefits...they are least bothered about what will happen to them after their death.

Muslims on the other hand take such concepts seriously..they don't like to be reminded of them...they feel Islam is all about doing namaz and fasting in ramzan...and they will get the blessings of God in this life and in the one after it....believe me many of them are not even aware that they are doing a sin(according to the religion they follow)...so,what I do is I tell them that whatever prayers they are doing would go in vain as they are indulging in a haram activity.

I know it would hurt them a lot..but as i said earlier this tactic is effective only for that day..next day they would do the same.

As syedali said taking back the paper would be the most effective way of handling such students but it cant be done in tests which are conducted by school.

If you had read my post carefully I said I had such discussions even in my previous school....I used to threaten students that cheating is a sin not just during exams but on normal working days..now I have joined a new school and I got the opportunity to talk to them about this topic just today.

Today I was invigilating in a hall where 9Th and 10 th class girls were taking their exams...half the class room had Muslim girls who were taking special Telugu exam (special Telugu is a subject which is easier than regular telugu taken by students who are a bit poor at Telugu..
Generally Muslims take regular Telugu)..I found some students were murmuring ..I shouted at them and made them quiet..after a while I found another girl peeping into the answer sheet of the girl who was sitting in front of her ..I warned the girl and gave them a lecture...I said they were cheating their parents as their parents think that the marks their children scored were done through their hard work...in a way they were fooling their parents...I added that it is haraam and a big sin to copy...would Allah be pleased with such acts? What is the use of doing namaz and fasting during ramzan if they indulge in such acts?

One girl's face turned red and stood to protest..She said, " Sir, why are you dragging God into such a trivial matter ? What is the need of using such heavy words?"..actually that was what I wanted..I wanted to hit them where it hurt the most..this was not the first time I talked like this...even in one other school I did the same.

As I have a close and jovial relation with those girls, they don't take such matters to heart.
But my doubt is shouldn't cheating in exam be considered haram and a sin?

 and what will you do to hindu gals cheating in exams?

@dravidianhero

I don't doubt your intention, but you said half of the hall was Muslim girls. ??? And I have not mentioned Hindus at all.

Second thing, please educate me, why should cheats listen to someone who is part of a bigger cheat? Do you really think anyone part of a bigger fraud holds any moral ground to lecture lower smaller scale cheats? Your principal and school is robbing off parents instead of making good citizens out of students, they are promoting cheats. So what do you say is not it haram to be part of such cheat organisation?

Sir aik baat bata dain ,in med school facilitators bhi hotay hain. Who are they exactly?

Nothing...just a mild shout and keeping an eye on them.
Oooooooohhh that shows ur intention of thread,

Religion is abt morality and all religions preach them. How come hinduism doesnt speak of cheating and ills linked with it.

Troll caught.

oh really so in hindusim there is no concept of sin ?or for that matter for you there is no need for bringing in religion for hindus students?

i do not know why Muslim angel is given to this thread ? If we think ethically cheating is a sin for every student irrespective of his/her faith or religion. If Hindus, Christian do cheating as per this thread then its sin for them too

The other half was filled by students of class 7 in whose room the exam was being conducted...exams for classes 3 to 7 were conducted in the morning and 8 to 10 in the afternoon.

These 7 class students are supposed to sit out in the open during the exam but as there was rain they were asked to sit in one column.

And regarding cheating part you are right..school is robbing them..but two wrongs don't make right.

Do you want me to turn a blind eye to their cheating?
