Saudi Arabia is nearing an end in its talks with the United States to buy two warships made by Lockheed Martin Corp.

The $1-billion-plus deal could be reached by the end of the year, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters this week.

The deal appears to be part of the Saudi Naval Expansion Program II, under discussion for years with the aim of modernizing the Royal Saudi Navy’s aging US warships.

According to US sources, the program has been accelerated after the conclusion of nuclear talks between Iran and the global powers in mid-July.

"We’re not seeing that any strains in the US–Saudi government to government relationship are inhibiting the business relationships," said one source. "The Saudis remain very interested in buying US technology."

The report comes at a time that Riyadh is incessantly bombing its impoverished neighbor, Yemen, since its pro-Saudi president fled the country.

Saudis are also buying 10 MH-60R helicopters and are close to finalizing the deal worth $1.9 billion.

Built by Sikorsky Aircraft, a unit of United Technologies Corp and Lockheed, the copters have various applications, including anti-submarine warfare missions.

“Saudi officials are now looking at significant orders of Lockheed's Paveway II Plus guided bomb systems to upgrade their existing inventory of bombs by adding laser-guidance systems,” Reuters said in its Wednesday report.

In July, the US State Department approved $500 million worth of munitions for the monarchy’s land troops.

The kingdom also has a $33.4-billion deal with Boeing Co to buy 84 F-15 fighter jets.

Saudi Arabia needs much bigger Navy than what they currently have I think they should have at least 32 Frigates and Corvettes and 12 Cruise Missile Destroyers with around 16 Submarines and lots of Missile boats. Secondly they also need to increase training and size of Army and get more Ballistic missiles from China and Pakistan. Lastly and also equally important they need to train and motivate their soldiers really well. Pakistan doesn't have much budget but if some oil miracle happens and our budget reaches like what KSA currently has I would like our Army to double its Size and also other Armed Forces and place at least 300000 soldiers in KSA permanently. War entering KSA will only bring chaos in entire Muslim world.

Is this a joke? Israel gets F-35s for free while Saudi Arabia pays vintage 1970s F-15s at 400 million bucks a pop? Saudi Arabia better not run out of oil for its own sake.

This Is A Fully Armed F-15SA, The Most Advanced Production Eagle Ever

BTW the source of this news is PressTV. Need I say more?

What is certain though is that the Saudi Arabian Navy will be in for a big improvement in the not so distant future which is needed.

It's a 1970s jet. Obsolete. Saudi Arabia isn't even allowed to buy F-35s which Israel gets for free. When Saudi Arabia out of oil, have to buy cheaper stuffs from Russia :p:

You mean the obsolete Su-27 1970s design?

Su-27 is newer than F-15. F-15 entered service in 1976. Su-27 entered service in 1985. Su-27 has way more advanced airframe design, it's more like a twin engined F-16, having LERX.

K, then its obsolete 1980s design.

Is it confirmed that the Saudis are buying LCS or are they buying MMCS / SCS?

@Saif al-Arab Any other sources? details?

Most of aircraft flying today are 70s and 80s designs.

There's a big difference between 1970s design and 1980s design. 1970s started off with HUD. 1980s started off with FBW, LERX.
