KOLKATA: After the successful commissioning of the offshore patrol vessel Barracuda into the Mauritian Coast Guard, Bangladesh is considering the possibility of ordering warships from India. The Barracuda was designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd in Kolkata. A few days ago, when Bangladesh Coast Guard director general Rear Admiral Mohammad Makbul Hossain visited Kolkata, he visited GRSE and interacted with chairman-cum-managing director Rear Admiral (retd) A K Verma.

"Ever since the Barracuda was delivered and commissioned in March this year, we have been receiving delegations from several countries. With the Bangladesh Coast Guard DG, we discussed the shipbuilding facilities available in Kolkata and our capabilities. We informed the delegation from Bangladesh how several advanced ships of the Indian Navy are being built at GRSE," Verma said later. Presently, GRSE is building Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes for the Navy.
Orders have also been placed for three stealth frigates under Project 17A. The shipyard is also among the five in the country shortlisted to build six conventional submarines under Project 75 (India). The Kolkata shipyard is also likely to build four patrol vessels for Vietnam as part of a $100 million credit line extended by India. The defence PSU is also competing with six companies to bag an order for two light frigates for the Philippines.

Defence experts believe that it will be a major event if Bangladesh places orders for ships from GRSE. This will reduce Bangladesh's reliance on China and Pakistan for military hardware. "Countries like Bangladesh don't have shipbuilding facilities of their own. They rely on other countries for ships and other military hardware. China has already made it clear that it is keen to extend support to countries in the Indian sub-continent. This is a matter of grave concern. Many of these countries would not have turned to China had India not behaved in such a ham-handed manner in the past. Countries like Myanmar had sought a credit line from India in the past in the form of military vessels. It turned towards China after India turned down the offer. Today, we are learning that it pays to make friends in the neighbourhood," one of them said.

In fact, Bangladesh has already used a ship built by GRSE. The first warship built in India was the INS Ajay. This was delivered to the Navy by GRSE in 1961. In 1974, the ship was gifted to Bangladesh after a major refit. There it was renamed BNS Surma.

times of india..:p:

The price should be half the price of an equivalent Chinese ship, plus ToT and some gifts...
Since India is so rich , what 2,3 ships to poor Bangladesh, because this latter did hit the natural Gas jackpot in its seas, and it is just a matter of time before it can afford the very expansive toys.

China will offer the twice the amount. India cannot match China finance power.

I seriously doubt Bangladesh will order warship from India. India herself even needs to order large number of subsystem like SAM,guns, radar and combat system.

While order from China will be a all in one package which allows better integration and lower price.

Well it's expected from Indians. Bangladesh, a riverine country doesn't have a shipbuilding industry...LOL.

Well China is already helping. Bangladesh has already bought 2 type 056 corvettes from China with at least 2 more to be built at Khulna Dockyards in the coming years (Khulna Dockyards has already started to build more 648t LPC essentially scaled down Type 056 corvettes).

Western Marine has already exported ships to the Netherlands, Germany Tanzania etc and is building OPVs to Kenya.

Some MPC ships Western Marine has built so far, being used in Europe. These are technically quite advanced.

Those are Coasters and River Barges.

I believe the time has come to ask local yards to build something bigger (not off shore patrol vessel but larger work like building a corvette). I don't believe JV's will be needed for anything but weapons integration. The yards are all quite capable. Build quality will certainly not be worse than GRSE.

Neither of them is an Ocean-going Vessel.

Nah! Probably depends on your definition of an ocean...

This vessel (EMSWave) was braving Beaufort 7 scale waves off the coast of Norway, it was made at Western Marine.

Why BD ? India already building ships for Vietnam in GRSE.

GRSE is manufacturer of Kamotra class, if you dont know. And going to build 3 P-17A. People these days.

Both Western Marine and Ananda are easily capable of building frigates upto 3000 tons, but they will need investment and TOT for weapons integration work. Right now the government is only investing in KSY, who have laid the Keel in 2014 for the local build of the Durjoy LPCs, expect them to start building the Type 056 corvettes from 2017_2018.

Both Ananda and Western Marine are in the process of expansion and retooling To build more export orders. If the navy or coast guard decides to consider the private yards we could easily build corvettes and light frigates very efficently, at costs no one could match.

Building a Kamorta class is no guarantee that build quality will be high. The main reason hulls are built at GRSE is the cheap labor. Empty hulls are then generally floated to Mumbai area yards for weapons fitment and integration. As far as I know weapons are not fitted at GRSE. Of course I could be wrong.

In any case GRSE would be too expensive to buy from. Chinese terms and prices are far more reasonable. Plus GRSE is too busy supplying India's local defense and naval needs.

Our shipbuilding labor costs are one-third that of India's. Labor cost is at least 30% of a ship's total cost. So yeah costs would definitely be a lot lower.
