I have enormous respect for Mani Shankar Aiyar; from what I've heard him say or read what hes written hes a staunch Indian Nationalist who believes in India - what it stands for and what course of action the Congress party took in the years leading up to '47. But at the same time he doesn't let his Nationalism be defined in such a parochial manner that it revolves around 'Hating Pakistan'. Numerous times I've heard him reiterate India's point of view but be open to listening to ours with patience and without the self-righteous smugness that most jingoists - on both sides - display.

He neither rationalizes India's mistakes nor demonizes Pakistan because of our mistakes. He doesn't take out a weighing scale whenever an Indo-Pak discussion is touched upon to weigh the mistakes of each other to decide whether India has one up on Pakistan or not.

In short - Hes the kind of South Asian who would make this region a better place. If there more Pakistanis and Indians like him our issues would've been resolved long ago and you might be having lunch in Lahore while I could be having dinner in Srinagar !

@scorpionx - What is your view about the man ?

I don't think anyone doubts his socialist ideals, it's just that most of India has moved on from the mid twentieth century NAM, socialist type theories because after 67 years of it being thrust down our throats by the elite we realize it does not work. "Loving" or "hating" a country are both silly things to do. Neither Pakistan or India are " good" or "bad". Countries simply have their own interests.

There was a debate on an Indian news Chanel, NDTV in which Mani and another gentleman had to represent India's point in a debate with a Pakistani team. Far from doing that Mani was actually reminding Pakistan about points they may have missed, it was embarrassing to watch even for the Pakistani candidates who were looking at each other in amazement.

The fact is this guy has completely lost touch with reality, he thinks pragmatism and practicality are something you pour over your kebabs like hot and tangy sauce. To make it worse he is proud of it and carries the fact that he doesn't need anyone's good opinion as a badge of honor, All this idealism hasn't gotten anyone anywhere. No amount of inviting to daughters wedding or attending diplomatic functions is going to get past the basic limitations that both countries have to negotiate with. What is needed is some hard nosed realpolitik and I hope we will see some of that over the coming years .

praise the lord for he gave us new member who can kick @Armstrong ..

I have no problem with his love for Pakistan until it is not anti India or sabotaging India..... He is talking mostly out of his personal relationship whereas he can't deny the complicit nature towards us Pakistan as a nation...

Do they serve beef in Pakistan High Commission?

Do they serve beef in Pakistan High Commission?
I guess not otherwise mani would have mentioned specifically how he enjoyed it..

yes and seven others :fie:

i too had seven, some years ago... four babies, their mother and two older male cats.

Mani Shankar Aiyar.. What he writes doesn't make any sense. Nevertheless, I read them because they make me laugh.

I did not talk about his socialist ideals nor did I talk about whether he is loving or hating Pakistan or whether Indians ought to do that. I simply talked about his willingness to listen to his opponent's opinions and debate them without insulting them.

If this is the same debate that had Swami on it then I did see it; Mr.Aiyer was the only non-Pakistani panelist who was willing to listen to the Pakistani point-of-view instead of simply looking to score brownie points. And that, sir, is the crux of my argument - He listens and he argues his view-point. He does not preach nor debase others.

It is precisely because of hard nosed realpolitik that we haven't been able to move forward because instead of sending emphatic negotiators to negotiate our issues who have the mandate from a government who genuinely wishes to talk resolve issues, we end up sending flamboyant jingoistic people who have neither the tact nor the desire to solve any issue.
