India Settles Sea Claim Dispute with Bangladesh to Seek Offshore Oil

The difference between this and the China-Vietnam/Philippines case is the fact that there is <1% of the world's natural gas reserves in the area under dispute here. The case in the SCS is very different.

...I think this govt. is repeating the mistakes of gujaral.....

India gave up its four-decade claim to a swathe of the Bay of Bengal about the size of Lake Ontario?
Man, lake Ontario is huge.....

India didn't give anything up, it tried for over 40 plus year to take that area. After years of negotiation that went no where Bangladesh government went to the UN courts to decide, it was a decision by the panel, to mark where the maritime border should be. It wasn't like india gave up the area, bilateral talks with india went no where, in the end it needed the UN to decide where the maritime border should be.

The difference between this and the Chinese issue is it's an maritime demarcation between 2 countries maritime borders, while the SCS is a multinational dispute with China, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia etc and it's far more complicated.

It was a binding decision of the international courts where the maritime courts should be, india took its claim, we took ours and this was the panels decision.

If India was so generous and gave up anything, why did it have to be dragged to the UN after 40 years of bilateral negotiations to decide where the border is?

The dispute was between two countries, a third party cannot intervene unless both the parties agree to it............and since India is more powerful than BD along with the fact that an Indian 'puppet' govt. is installed in BD(as you guys claim), India could have easily 'materialized' all its claims.......
Therefore, you should thank India for accepting UN court as intermediary and not taking the path of force/treachery........

dont expect from bangali to say thanks to India for anything...they are well known for that! They can easily take side of China who was the last country to acknowledge BD as Country ....

India couldn't force jack, if it could it would have by now. The government in BD is friendly to india just that friendly but has recently made greater overtures to China. If india is so powerful why doesn't it take Azad Kashmir as it claims?

It was BD that took india to the UN, india didn't want to look bad so had to agree. There is no need to thank india, for the UN courts decision, would you thank anyone you had to take to the courts to get back what's yours?

Would have said thanks if we could agree this bilaterally, and we tried for over 40 years. In the end we had no choice but to go to the UN to get the decision.

What if we send the navy, and reject the arbitration ruling, we can do the Chinese way here too.

Na, how would that look to the rest of the world, then you'd never be able yap on at the Chinese.

World dont give the shit about this, you really believe that. I think you dont understand geopolitics, every matter cannot be resolved with gun boat diplomacy, it destroy the India BD relation, and we desperately need to secure BD as partner, thats why we give away that sea.

That's because the Chinese were allied to pakistan in the 70s, they had no choice. Now China is our largest trading partner, one of our biggest investors, the main supplier to our military and the next future world power who we have no disputes with.

Where as india still refuses to fulfil even agreements it's signed decades back.

Just give me numbers, how much China trading with BD and with India.

BTW, I can give you an example, US biggest trading partner is China too.

You didn't give anything way, it has to belong to you in the first place to give it away. Since it wasn't your in the first place how can you give it away?

The problem with india is you can't negotiate with india in good faith, period. You haven't even implemented those agreements you signed decades ago with us, how do you expect us to trust you? You talk about being a partner, then why did we have to take india to the UN?

People in BD no longer trust any agreement your country signs, and I don't need any lecture from you regards geopolitics thanks.

Don't be lazy google it, it's all freely available. Compared to india, China is far more important.

You dont need, thats the real problem, you take every comment as taunt. Sorry bro, if we want to destroy BD, then we have enough way to do so, we dont need even your lecture on diplomacy.

Thank god, your govt. dont think like your way, otherwise the Indian Navy ship already deployed on that sea.

read that comment again, I say China is bigger trading partner with India or BD, who have more diplomatic advantage over China, BD or India?

Who have more economical advantage, India or BD? China is not going to protect you.

And one more thing, International Court of Arbitration is not UN.

This topic is about the maritime dispute between India and BD not about Chinas choice or how powerful india is. The real truth is it took BD over 40 years negotiating to settle the maritime border, eventually we had to go to the UN to decide because talking with your government was going nowhere.
