The United States might be denying direct mediation on the Kashmir issue, but it has opened up diplomatic channels with Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to push for a final settlement on the issue.

Top US State Department members were in touch with the Mirwaiz during his New York visit in September, when he went there to attend the Organisation of Islamic Countries meeting. Those top State Department members work in close association with US’ Special envoy for ****** Richard Holbrooke.

Confirming his meeting with state department members, Mirwaiz told the Hindustan Times “the US is eager to resolve the Kashmir issue once for all. They are again showing interest in Kashmir.”

Without naming anyone, the Hurriyat chairman said the seriousness on the part of the US can be gauged from the fact “it has identified individuals to study the Kashmir issue with new global realities.”

The Obama administration is under pressure from Pakistan to deliver on the Kashmir issue to see a progress on the Afghan front. Pakistan has been arguing “the peace to Afghanistan has to come through Kashmir”.

It’s reliably learnt that the Obama administration has asked renowned security expert Stephen Cohen to study the Kashmir issue. He has already presented a paper on the Kashmir issue and the peace process to the Obama administration.

In the past, India had objected to the US decision to appoint former US president Bill Clinton as pointman on the Kashmir issue. Of late, to contain spread of extremist forces in the areas closer to Afghanistan, the US is keen to resolve the Kashmir issue to plug spread of Taliban-ism in the area.

Pakistan has been using the Kashmir issue to recruit men from the North West Frontier Provinces (NWFP), North and South Waziristan and Punjab. The Hizbul Mujahideen used to have a training camp in the NWFP.

Resolving the Kashmir issue will weaken the Taliban movement as it will relieve many fighters who have waged “jehad” in the name of the Kashmir cause.

What has Taliban got anything to do with Kashmir?

Surprise, surprise, and I thought the "freedom fighters" were only Kashmiris! What are Pakistanis from NWFP/NW/SW/Punjab doing in Kashmir?

I hope Stephen Cohen knows better than to even touch this. Anyway, India will not agree to whatever US would suggest/recommend (not "order" as in the case of some countries).

Stephen Cohen is generally not in the books of the Indian establishment so lets see how the GoI will react to this

You know those statements qualify as trolling as per forum rules!
Again, gotta give it to you, your anti-India vitriol. Alas, and I thought senescence and maturity went hand in hand. I was wrong.

Btw, I find it very amusing, people wishing that US be allowed a base in Kashmir! Two words - India & China! Never gonna let it happen.

True. If we cannot resolve the issue who knows. USA may decide to sort out the issue by taking over the whole of Pak-India Kashmir. I wonder whether Pakistan will then assist the USA in fighting the Kashmiri terrorists

Not all trolling.

You Indians claim that freedom fighters are being recruited from among Taliban from NWFP, FATA.

That is the worst kind of trolling if you do not have proofs.

If you have then present it before spreading such a bad propaganda which has no tail neither head.

And i stand by my statement if it had been the case then you would have needed more body bags for your occupying soliders in Held Kashmir.

That would be good for Kashmiris and Pakistan will accept it. The only looser will be India.

I wonder whether India would be having guts then to deploy its terrorist army in Kashmir under US??????

nice quote Jana :)

First of all India won't let USA to intervene in Kashmir issue. Today's statement is a mere consolation for Pakistan in the sense Gilani urged US to solve Kasmir issue and he tried to link Kasmir issue to WOT.

take care of yours first! Then wish ill for others.

Btw, what do you make of Pakistani nationals being killed by Indian forces in Kashmir, and weapons being confiscated from them. Wait, they were just "tourists"!
