As many as 50,000 Chinese and foreign students, study Arabic and Islamic culture at various universities and educational institutions in Beijing, asserts Zhang Hong, professor at Beijing Foreign Studies (BFU).
Zhang was speaking to Arab News on Friday at a reception hosted by the Chinese Ambassador to Riyadh Li Chengwen in honor of Arabist Chinese academics who are visiting the capital to attend the ongoing Janadriyah festival.
Arabic language is taught at more than 40 universities in China, the professor added.
Among these universities are the University of International Business and Economics and Beijing Foreign Studies (BFU). The latter produces most of the Chinese diplomats and ambassadors posted in the country's missions in Arab countries.
Prominent Saudi academics and media men including Abdullah Al-Washmi, secretary-general of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Center for the Arabic Language, attended the event.
“BFU, which was established under the Chinese Foreign Affair program was the cradle of Chinese diplomacy,” he said, adding that in the eighties it came under the Chinese Ministry of Education.
He said BFU specializes in producing Chinese professionals well versed in foreign languages and experts in the science of languages.

“At our university, 60 major international languages are being taught, including Arabic, English, French, Russian and Spanish. These languages are recognized as business languages at the United Nations and other international organizations,” he said.BFU has produced 400 Chinese ambassadors and 700 consultants who work in Chinese embassies around the world in political, economic and other domains. “The current Chinese ambassador to Riyadh is one of BFU’s graduates,” Zhang added.
He said that 200 Chinese students have completed the Arabic language course at BFU, of which more than 30 have been appointed ambassadors to Arab countries. Currently there are more than 10 Arabist Chinese ambassadors posted in Arab countries, including the Chinese Ambassadors to the United Arab Emirates, Sultanate of Oman, Sudan, Iraq and even Turkey.
“The Chinese government and the people of China have displayed a keen interest in learning the Arabic language because it represents a strong bridge that connects the two worlds,” the professor said, adding: “Saudi Arabia has an equal interest to teach Arabic, and disseminate Arabic and Islamic civilization to China.”
He said cultural ties between the two countries are growing, especially with the presence of more than 3,000 Saudi students in China.
Meanwhile, Li, the Chinese ambassador, stressed that the participation of Arabist Chinese in the national heritage festival reflects the Chinese government’s keen interest in boosting relations between the two countries.
“We have chosen to strengthen existing bonds between our two countries through cultural exchanges,” the ambassador said.

I am still waiting for us to adopt Chinese as the second foreign language after English. Imagine the many benefits the GCC could get from this? Arabic as our first language one of the 5 most spoken languages and a major world language, English (most spoken) and Chinese (second most spoken). It would give us so many benefits and further boost trade. The strategic location of the ME as the major crossroad of the world would also make such an idea more logical than had we been located elsewhere.

I would like to see such steps. I would also like to see my children or grand-children being able to speak 3 world languages such as Arabic, English and Chinese in the even more future globalized world. Hopefully by then GCC will be a major hub of trade, financial growth and positive news. As it mostly is today but still a lot can get better and change.

China is a model country on many ways and I hope to see us even slightly emulate China on such issues. No excuse for us not to adopt Chinese as our second foreign language. Sooner rather than later. I urge the citizens of the GCC to spread this word and the authorities to take notice.

The fact that Han Chinese and Arabs are the two biggest ethnic groups in the world should also automatically mean that we should work closely together.

China has always been a pivot for knowledge and multicultural studies, and will continue to do so.

Which is why we should embrace and introduce Chiense as our second foreign language. Imagine this situation. We already speak Arabic as our first language which is a world language in business, culture etc. and one of the 5 most spoken languages in the world. Then English which is already taught which is the most widespread language in the world. If we adopted Chinese, which is the second most widespread language in the world in terms of numbers, we would be in a pretty awesome situation, don't you think?

Crown Prince Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, will begin a four-day state visit to China from Thursday as the guest of Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao, said Chinese Ambassador Li Chengwen on Monday.
It will be the first visit of the crown prince to China, where he will hold wide-ranging talks with high-ranking Chinese officials on a range of bilateral, regional and international issues.“The two sides will also seize the opportunity to further boost friendship as well as deepen pragmatic cooperation in all sectors,” said Ambassador Chengwen, while referring to this high-profile visit. He also commended the existing bilateral ties, fruitful economic and trade cooperation as well as close coordination in international and regional affairs between the Kingdom and Beijing.
The crown prince will hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who also holds the positions of General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission.
The Crown Prince is also likely to meet Chinese Premier Li Keqiang as well as Chinese Defense Minister Gen. Chang Wanquan for an intensive discussion on bilateral relations.
Chengwen said: “We in China regard this visit as very important and of high interest for us that would boost strategic relations,” and added: “I am confident that such visits will push our relations to new highs.”
He said a joint move to boost “strategic ties” will top the agenda of talks between Crown Prince Salman and senior Chinese officials.

China will also express its desire and readiness to take part in Saudi Arabia’s strategy for economic diversification and deepen cooperation in various fields, he said.
“China attaches great importance to the development of its strategic friendly relations with Saudi Arabia and always gives priority to bilateral ties with this country in the region, said the Chinese ambassador, who held talks with Prince Muqrin, second deputy premier, on Sino-Saudi relations here Monday. The visit of Crown Prince Salman will also provide an opportunity for China to push forward free trade talks with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, keep close communication in international and regional affairs, and enhance coordination within the United Nations, the Group of Twenty (G20) and other multilateral organizations, said a report released on this occasion.
In January 2006, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah was the first ever Saudi head of state to visit China. His visit was reciprocated by Chinese President Hu Jintao on April 22 of the same year, as part of a world tour. In February 2009, Hu visited Saudi Arabia a second time to “exchange views on international and regional issues of common concern” with King Abdullah.

J-20 can be sold, but Pakistan demands more about the cheaper J-31, while if KSA wanna pick J-20, then it won't be a problem.

Hmm, if that's what you think, then I think both can come into an agreement where China's technological blueprints remain protected.

A few months ago we heard that the BD is planning to acquire the J-10, do you think that is possible?

As long as it won't get exposed to the western nations, then everything is fine.

China now is developing the 6th gen fighter named J-25, and the prototype should be expected to start is maiden flight around 2025.

If we always try to stick with the old technology, then we wouldn't be able to look forward to the new technology.

The US has made a bad example for not selling its F-22, which has in fact hindered the development of its next gen fighter.

China is studying whether its automakers could start manufacturing cars in Saudi Arabia to help meet increasing demand, an official told Aleqtisadiah newspaper.
“There is an initial desire for the production of cars [in Saudi Arabia], but the idea is still undergoing studies,” Li Chenwang, China’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia told the newspaper.

The official did not specify which of China’s automakers may be involved in the studies.

There are currently 150 Chinese companies active in Saudi Arabia, in various sectors including contracting, infrastructure, telecoms, trade and renewable and alternative energy, according to the official.

“We aim to expand work between the two countries, and find more vitality and activity through common paths,” he added.

Several global automakers have reportedly been considering proposals to set up plants to manufacture cars in the kingdom, Arab News reported in June.

“Ford has been seriously studying establishing production lines in the Saudi local market for more than a year now,” Arab News quoted Nabil al-Husin, a member of the National Committee for Car representatives at the Council of Saudi Chambers and a Ford representative, as saying.

General Motors and Chrysler were also studying whether to establish plants in Saudi Arabia, the newspaper added.

Saudi Arabia’s car imports increased 33 percent during 2012, as the kingdom imported 982,000 cars from various brands, up from 737,000 cars imported in 2011, the Saudi Gazette reported in August.

Open Doors 2013 report says growth in foreign students in US fueled by China and Saudi Arabia

Noura Islam, a sophomore at UC Irvine from Saudi Arabia, chose the school for its engineering program and because “I’m a beach person,” she says. The number of Saudi students at UC Irvine has almost tripled since 2010, going from eight to 23 this year. (Spencer Bakalar, Los Angeles Times)

But the numbers have grown steadily since 2005 and doubled from the 2010 to 2012 academic years, according to a recent survey. The number of Saudi students in the U.S. last year grew to 44,566 — a nearly 30% increase from 2011.

The country ranked behind only China, India and South Korea in the number of students studying in U.S. colleges and universities.

I wonder how many thousand Saudi Arabian students there are in China? Does anyone have a number? That's also part of the cooperation.

Over 40 universities in China teach Arabic

I would urge the Chinese educators to remove Spanish and replace it with German.

I would urge the Chinese educators to remove Spanish and replace it with German.

Hmm, don't know about that one. Spanish is a much more global language and overall the Spanish speaking countries have a bigger economy combined and bigger potential and much bigger market.

From my point of view, which is that of KSA, Arab World and ME I would like us very much to adopt Chinese as the second foreign language after English for the reasons I have stated previously in this thread. This way we would be able to speak 3 (Arabic, English and Chinese) of the 5 most spoken languages in the world and it would give us many benefits.

I do believe that developing countries like KSA (like all Muslim countries) can learn a lot from China on many fronts.

Of course this does not mean that we should cut ties with the West that have been a good ally of us but China is our ally too and biggest trading partner and the ties are only going to grow. I think that in this increasingly globalized world we need to learn from others and take the best things from other cultures. A "siege-mentality" is wrong IMO.

@Arabian Legend please allow me to post your previous article in this thread. This should be the KSA/GCC - China tread and place for updates IMO.

Kingdom, China ink four cooperation accords

BEIJING — The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and China Friday began a new era of cooperation and understanding and cemented their relations further by signing four agreements in the field of bilateral investments, scientific research, quality control and education.

Crown Prince Salman Bin Abdul Aziz, deputy premier and minister of defense, described the agreements as satisfactory.

Crown Prince Salman also held talks with Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang.

After talks with Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao, the crown prince said he was satisfied with the “identity of views” on various bilateral and international issues during his talks with Chinese leaders. On bilateral issues, the crown prince said, the two sides have agreed to expand the circle of cooperation, especially in the political, security, economic, commercial, industrial, scientific, technological, energy and cultural fields and work for tightening the contacts between the private sectors in both countries and entering into joint ventures and investments to the mutual interest of the two friendly peoples.

The agreement on cooperation program between the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Kingdom and the Public Department for Quality Control, Tests and Quarantine of China, was signed by Kingdom’s Minister of Commerce and Industry Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabia and Chi Shoping, president of the Chinese department.

China’s Vice President Li also attended the signing ceremony.

The agreement aims at curbing the flow of imitated or forged goods into the Saudi markets.

To reach this end, the agreement envisages a number of measures like blacklisting merchants and factories involved in imitating or making counterfeit products in both the countries.

The agreement also talks of exemplary punishment for the erring factories and exporters.

The fruitful cooperation between the two countries, Crown Prince Salman said, was not confined to certain fields. “We have witnessed transformation of this relation into a strategic partnership with wide dimensions to the benefit of the two friendly peoples,” he said.

“The signing of a number of memoranda of understanding in the fields of investment and cooperation in space sciences and technology and technical cooperation program in the commercial field, contribution of the Saudi Development Fund in financing a project to establish university buildings in the state of Sanche, once more confirm the depth of this partnership and its good objectives based on the joint desire to continue the historical ties binding our two peoples and our common endeavor to achieve comprehensive development in our two countries in the service of peace and stability,” the crown prince said.

The memorandum of understanding between King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and the Chinese National Space Management for Cooperation in the fields of space sciences and technologies was signed by Dr. Mohammed Bin Ibrahim Al-Suwayel, President of KACST, and Cheo Datchi, Deputy Minister for Industry and Information Technology and President of the Chinese National Space Management for Space, Sciences and Technologies.

The MoU on the Saudi Development Fund’s contribution to co-finance the new headquarters for the University of Leolyang in the Sanche state of China was signed on the Saudi side by the fund’s Deputy President Yousef Bin Ibrahim Al-Bassam and on the Chinese side by Wang Bawon, deputy minister of finance.

The fourth and last agreement was on cooperation in boosting investment between the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA) and the Investment Development Commission, an affiliate of the Ministry of Commerce of China. It was signed by SAGIA Governor Abdullatif Al-Othman and on the Chinese side by the Commission’s Chairman Leo Diancheon.

On international issues, the crown prince said the Kingdom appreciates the Chinese position supporting the rights of the Palestinians.

Crown Prince Salman said President Xi Jinping’s stress on a prompt peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria through complete implementation of Geneva I declaration issued on June 30, 2012. The declaration calls for the establishment of an interim ruling authority with full executive powers. The crown prince hoped that the world community would unite to coerce the Syrian regime to “stop bloodshed of the dear Syrian people.”
