HYDERABAD: After heavily publicizing the government's intention to launch an attack on Maoist headquarters in the jungles of Chhattisgarh for
weeks, Union home minister P Chidambaram took a U-turn on Friday by saying that the proposed "Operation Green Hunt" was an invention of the media. All that the centre as was doing was to help the states by deploying paramilitary forces in the fight against left-wing extremism, the home minister said at the passing out parade of IPS probationers in Hyderabad.
The home minister's statement was greeted with disbeliefbut analysts said that it had much to do with the criticism that the Union government offensive would degenerate into a whole-scale war against the tribals who inhabited the territory occupied by Maoists. Analysts had said that there was no other way that Maoists could be distingushed from tribals and in the offensive the latter would in effect be targeted.
"The government of India is ready to face any challenge including the threat from Maoists. Law and order is a state subject. Therefore, primarily the states should carry out all the counterinsurgency measures and ensure that the administration is in complete government control. However, the Centre would continue helping the Maoist-affected states with paramilitary forces, intelligence and technical assistance," Chidamabaram said.
The home minister said he was not aware of the reported statement of the Maoists that they have agreed for a dialogue with the government. "I have not seen that statement. Therefore, I will not comment," he said.
The home minister also refused to comment on the reported statement of a Sri Lankan government official in which he claimed connection between LTTE and the Maoists. "I have not come across any documents. I cannot say anything," he said.
Chidambaram confirmed the Pakistan link in the aborted LeT plan to attack major targets in India. He said that the US administration has informed him about the details of the design prepared by terrorists, two of whom were arrested by the FBI. The arrest of a few others in Pakistan in the same terror plot indicated the involvement of that country, he said.
The home minister urged the media not to create alarm by unduly highlighting the first anniversary of the attack on Mumbai which took place on November 26 last year. "The security forces are vigilant and perfectly capable of thwarting any attack. There is no reason to raise alarm," he said. He described the Indian Mujahideen as a virtual organization to which different groups and individuals claim affiliation. "Action has been taken against all such people," he said.
Responding to a question related to the death of a kidney patient in Chandigarh owing to security cordon of a hospital where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was to speak, Chidambaram hoped that the Special Protection Guards and the state police had learnt their lesson. "They should be sensitive to the emergency needs of the people," he said.

Well well well, it appears that the centre is feeling the heat. Apparently, discussions, seminars, protests, etc etc by Leftist intellectuals is having an effect.
At least we are doing something right.
