cant blame her.....she was arrested in the heart of NYC in front of bystanders and her own kids

if i were indian - i'd be fuming mad

she did commit a crime though; geneva conventions apply, but in this case - only for consular affairs. On labor issues, theyre quite strict - and she mis-stated facts on the paperwork regarding pay of her domestic servant

to arrest her and throw her in a jail cell with crack addicts and get stripped naked and searched for contraband -- that's extreme!!

Either the Americans were feeling a bit heavy-handed, or the indians did something irritating behind the scenes that made US want to retaliate somehow


removing the safety barriers was a witty move; but it will surely invite American anger. They may downgrade their relations due to risk of terrorism but who knows maybe they'll somehow resolve the issue and deport the diplomat

I can't imagine America treating any other country's diplomat as badly as it had treated India's. The public arrest and cavity search is unprecedented.

The article didn't mention a cavity search, but it did state the following:

"Mayor Annise Parker said late Thursday that the officers had been restricted to desk duty while the police and the State Department investigated the arrest."

and

"The United States responded with a promise to investigate the episode quickly and fully. 'The department takes this incident very seriously and has been in touch with the Chinese Embassy about what occurred,' a spokeswoman at the State Department, Nicole Thompson, said."

Now as far as we know, the police officers who arrested and humiliated the Indian diplomat are still on duty and face no suspension or punishment. America has not promised any quick action or investigation.

America thinks too little of India to warrant a response in accordance with the Geneva Convention. India is not China or Russia or Germany, so America can afford to relax and let this pass.

It's up to India to make America take notice, but do Prime Minister Singh and Sonia Gandhi have the guts to stand up to America?

yeah and they send "diplomat" to Lahore who went trigger happy on bystanders.....

if things were my way, Raymond Davis would still be lingering in jail and the former DG-ISI wouldnt have gone to the court trying to secure his release (in exchange for so-called blood money).

"Shariah Law" as it is known in Pakistan screwed us in our azzes and a murderer posing as a diplomat got away only after we forced the yanks to admit he was a spy. So in that sense, I can sympathize, even though the cases are different. A lady diplomat being strip-searched and having her azz checked for drugs or contraband then sent in a prison cell with petty criminals and addicts, i cant think of a way they Americans could have screwed up more. I dont know if US had a bone to pick with india over certain matters and they found an easy target.

The embassy of india should have got involved immediately. She shouldve at least had the right to make a phone call to her supervisor who would have alerted department of state. That's how issues are resolved.

I'm not exactly the one to lobby for indian interests - but here the case is just quite unfair and improper - regardless of this woman's fradulent papers. I'd imagine the Americans are pretty angry at new delhis retaliation - but again i wouldnt blame indians for being pissed off!

all they'd have to do is declare her persona non grata, take away her credentials and send her and her maid on the next flight back to delhi

it would only be a problem if the maid were being beaten and threatened, the way some persian gulf princes do to their slaves
