RABIGH — When King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC)’s strategic project is completed, it is expected to accommodate 2 million people and investment projects worth a total of $100 billion, according to Fahd Abdulmohsen Al-Rasheed, KAEC chief executive officer and managing director.

During an interview with Okaz/Saudi Gazette, Al-Rasheed spoke about Cityquest Forum, due to be held at KAEC on Nov. 25 and 26.

The forum, which will be held for the first time at the city, is a non-profit global platform focusing on the exchange of views regarding the future of economic cities all over the globe, Al-Rasheed said.

KAEC was selected to host the forum because it is one of the biggest economic projects in the world. “Countless companies that have implemented gigantic projects in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia will be taking part in the forum,” he said.

Moreover, around 150 top government officials and businessmen representing 15 new economic cities in the world will be speaking during the forum about the challenges, obstacles and potential opportunities of economic cities.

Al-Rasheed said the first phase of King Abdullah Port (KAP), which was completed in October, will handle 1.7 million containers in the first year. This number will increase up to 4 million a year after three years when the entire project is completed.

"KAP is a strategic industrial destination for 250 million consumers in the Middle East and North Africa. Simply put, it is a pioneering project that will add a lot to the overall development process seen in the Kingdom. One of its main features is the fact that it is directly linked with the industrial city," he said.

The industrial city project, being developed on an area stretching over 25 million square meters, is the hub for dozens of pioneering global steel, food and pharmaceutical factories. However, these are not the only projects; there are similarly important ones such as the railroads linking the Eastern Province with the Red Sea coast and KAEC with Al-Haramain Railway. The city recently signed a SR300 million contract with the Saudi Electricity Company to connect it with the national power grid.

Regarding Saudization, Al-Rasheed said it is one of KAEC’s priorities. Many foreign companies have started hiring Saudis and providing them with training to meet the government’s requirements that call for creating job opportunities for Saudi youth and enhancing their role in developing the national economy. The city has so far signed contracts with 60 mega local and global companies such as Pfizer, Sanofi, Tamer Group, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Almarai in addition to other companies.

Many KAEC social and entertainment facilities are up and running and work is being carried out to finish the remaining development projects. For healthcare services in the city, Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital operates all week round to meet the medical needs of KAEC residents and employees. There are numerous restaurants and cafes as well as hotels. A hypermarket will open its doors in the beginning of 2014.

This is groundbreaking news. One of the biggest economic projects in the world currently and one of the most ambitious ones.:yahoo:

@Arabian Legend, @Yzd Khalifa, @JUBA, @Bubblegum Crisis, @BLACKEAGLE etc. Opinions please.

Great work, keep it up boyz!

The scale of this project my friend is bigger than anything seen in the Arab and Muslim world. This is just immense! I can't wait to witness this. Look at all the giant projects in our country. Just amazing. From all corners of the country.
This is all really encouraging and I hope that it will benefit our country, people, region, Muslims and Arabs and non-Arabs. And even non-Muslims.

What I sightly wonder is though why did such projects not happen 10 or 15 years ago for example?

I think that the key must be never to be satisfied and comforted with past glories or something alike. We need to look forward and only forward. After all the past is the past. The future we can do something about - the past never.

Very nice and ambitious project.

Indeed it is. It is quite frankly a huge and groundbreaking project on even international level. Not only on Saudi Arabian and regional level.

I am trying to get the attention of @Bubblegum Crisis but he seems to be hiding or busy. He is the best man for the videos, pictures, sources etc. He seems to be a walking library in that department. Not sure where he hides all those links.:omghaha:

@Bubblegum Crisis, where are you? We would like to hear your opinion about this huge and amazing project since you are knowledgable on this field and have a wide knowledge about all the many current and upcoming economic projects in Saudi Arabia and other GCC member states.

Don't hide.:tsk:

Just bubblegum ?

1. The quoted number ( 2m) is not correct.

2. Do you why Economic city is required ? 100 points if some one can get this right.

And oh, yours truly spends day and night on this project's design. Now that KAFD is done. :D

@Yzd Khalifa ..... ;)

I quoted another bunch in a previous post in this thread. But @Bubblegum Crisis is the guy with all the links and videos. I appreciate that and he also has knowledge on those fields at least from what I have seen so I was interested in seeing his opinion about this.

Why is the quoted number not correct?

LOL, to prosper more like any other economic city across the globe. Otherwise there would be no point in building them.

KAFD is not fully done yet btw.

But it will come.

You are very much welcome. I am sure that we well see Indians around once completed.

KSA is currently building so many huge projects, from expanding the holy sites in Islam in Makkah and Madinah to building top modern metros, top modern railways connecting the huge country, the worlds highest skyscraper (Kingdom Tower) a little bit outside of Jeddah along the beautiful Red Sea coast, King Abdullah Financial city in Riyadh (currently one of the biggest skyscraper projects in the world) etc.

Or all the industrial/economic cities.

I can recommend you to take a look at this thread below if interested:

The solar plants are also a work in process and other alternative energy forms.
