Syrian President Bashar Assad has been looking into the possibility of claiming political asylum for himself, his family and his associates in Latin America, in case he is forced to flee Damascus, reported Haaretz on Wednesday.

Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad held meetings in Cuba, Venezuela and Ecuador over the past week, and brought with him classified personal letters from Assad to local leaders.

A source in the Venezuelan capital Caracas who spoke to Haaretz was not able to say what the response to the Syrian request was, but Venezuela's foreign ministry confirmed to the El Universal newspaper that al-Miqdad did indeed bring a letter for President Hugo Chavez. Chavez received the letter just before he set out to Cuba last Wednesday to undergo further treatment for cancer.

All that the official spokesperson in Caracas could confirm was that Assad's message touched on "the personal relationship between the two presidents," and that the deputy foreign minister's visit defines the close relationship between the two states.

Venezuela would be a proper place. he could buy a villa there. But then again, i doubt this fight will end anytime soon. The idea of 'the last days of Bashar" has been going around for almost two years now. there are still large areas in Syria loyal to Assad. he could relocate his forces and create his own state within Syria if he looses Damascus.

The syrians were living a peaceful tolerant life, they destroyed their country with their own hands.

We could provide him with assylum in Imralı prison if he really wants to survive.

you people are really dumb trying to make false claims once about chemical weapons and another about Alasad leaving... hahaha didn't you people say once that Alasad sent his VP to Russia to find an asylum for Alasad in Russia last year...

exactly, quite ironic that the gulf dictators want freedom and democracy for others while their own citizens are raised to "worship" the kings. They tried to destroy Iraq as well, but we luckily have managed to stand up back on our feet and are slowly recovering after 8 years of foreign sponsored terrorism.
I wish it doesn't last that long for Syria, although i have a big feeling it will worst than Iraq because of these bastards.

what a joke, the likes of the king Hamad have become defenders of human rights.

Iraq suffered, and now Syria is suffering just because of sovereignty and independence...
I know right? Saudi Arabia was named after AlSaud family... and now they are preaching democracy and human rights... and Hamad who kicked his father out to get his position is talking about democracy...
