Why I Hate Diwali

why not will mark all dates for 2013 ...coming next is christmas,pongal,shab-e-barat etc etc....

The reason why I stopped with Pongal is that is when we used to run out of stocks. Used to have a relative own a factory(still he is) in Sivakasi and we would have exotic crackers shipped in a goods train wagon at less than 1/4 of the price of what was sold in the market. :)

Crowd of "we" is quite substantial as one can see from those news and blogs and from those in housing societies...............................:coffee:
Lets not talk about your definition of substantial... Nice try though...

Why are we supposed to give a crap about some whiny little emo? There are billions of other ways to care for the environment keep pollution in check.

Its a festival after all, its ok for normal people to enjoy, wind down and have some fun, emos can go cut themselves up on Deepwali for all we care.

firecrackers dangerous for kids and a big time noisy creepy stuff that mars peace of mind. the markets are flooded with these for many occasions

It’s that wonderful time of the year when festivities are in the air and nip of winter brings with it the smell of mouthwatering delicacies.

People are dressed in their best and are often seen with brightly colored gift packages to be given to friends and relatives. It's Diwali time!

But along with all the celebrations and festivities come the ear bursting noise and the thick pungent smells of crackers that's hangs in the air days before and after Diwali. And the excessive consumerism that may lead to a lot of unrequired wastage.

Here are some green mantras to make this Diwali not just happy and prosperous but also more eco-friendly.

Go traditional

Light diyas in the true spirit of Diwali, rather than opting for electric illumination which will only use up electricity. Though earthen lamps need oil, the quantity required is very less and it burns for at least 3-4 hours.

This will help you save electricity and also add a traditional stroke with social responsibility in the festival. Go check out some handmade diyas!

Gift organic

Go green this Diwali and gift your family and friend from the organic store round the corner. These days there are plenty of options in organic gifts from exotic food items to cosmetics and personal use items to bags and clothes.

Exotic herbal soaps and crèmes, special teas, gourmet coffee, spices, plants and flower seeds etc are more such options.

Go one step ahead and wrap your gifts in handmade or recycled paper, jute or cloth bags.

Eco-friendly Crackers

What is Diwali without crackers? But, noise and air pollution levels shoots up drastically during the festive season.

Instead of selecting traditional chemical cracker this Diwali go for eco-friendly crackers made up of recycled paper and the sound produced by these crackers is under the decibel limit defined by the Pollution Board. These crackers produce paper fluffers and different color lights instead of sound on bursting.

Eco-friendly Decorations

Opt for natural decorative items like flowers and leaves instead plastic decorations which are detrimental for the environment.

Fresh flowers, foliage and floating candles can be used to decorate the house. Rangolis and alpanas are more traditional ways to decorate the courtyard.

Place handmade scented candles around the house to make it all glittering and bright. Use organic incense sticks in place of synthetic room fresheners.

Donate unused items

Diwali can be a great time for recycling and donating unused items lying around the house. Often there are a lot of clothes and toys that are no longer in use.

Passing them on to the less privileged will make their Diwali brighter but and yours a more meaningful one.

Diwali has to do more with Mosquitoes and killing them using the smoke originated from crackers.

Hinduism made it a festival , In those day people do not understand science put this event as festival related to gods so that everybody will obey and do it.

In ancient days Religion was used to implement some practices which were scientifically good for Humanity.

Diwali was the best festival and even foreigners admire the way Indians celebrate.

Pollution level during Diwali goes up by 30%

LUCKNOW: Smog continued to prevail in Lucknow for the 11th consecutive day on Sunday, and is likely to intensify in the next few days due to bursting of fire crackers during Diwali festivities. Already, the air pollution level of the city is more than twice the permissible limit. The air pollution is rising because of increase in the number of vehicles and diesel generators as well as increase in the dust particles due to rise in construction activities and bad conditions of roads.

Experts say that during Diwali, the air pollution level is likely to increase by 30%, which will not only be dangerous for those suffering from pulmonary diseases, but also cause breathing problem to others.

The smog is a combination of fog and smoke or other air pollutants. It is created when moisture level is high in the atmosphere. It does not allow the tiny particles of pollutants to dissipate, and instead tiny water droplets carrying fine particles of pollutants and dust remain suspended in the atmosphere. At present the speed of the wind is very low. As a result, the smog is virtually hanging in the atmosphere, resulting in hazy conditions. The authorities are aware of the fact that the pollution level are alarming in the city and the fire crackers will increase it further, but no action has been taken so far.

A recent survey conducted by Indian Institute of Toxicology Research reveals that the average values of PM10 in residential, commercial and industrial areas in the city are above the prescribed National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) of 100 g/m3. Particulate Matter (PM) is the term for solid and liquid particles in the air. The survey found that the average value of PM was 167.1g/m3, 230.9 g/m3 and 217.9 g/m3 respectively in residential, commercial and industrial areas. The noise levels during day and night in the residential and commercial areas were also found to be above the prescribed limit.

Regional Officer, UP Pollution Control Board, SK Mishra said that data shows that pollution level during Diwali increases at least by 30%. Experts also said that the crackers contain elements like copper, cadmium, sulphur, aluminium, barium and various others that help in releasing vibrant colours after it is ignited. Once a cracker is burnt, it releases toxic chemicals that remain suspended for long time causing serious health aliments.

The heavy metals remain in the atmosphere for long and then get oxidised before entering the food chain through vegetables.

City-based chest physician Dr Ashutosh Dubey said, "Gaseous air pollutants along with other toxic gases emitted due to burning of firecrackers aggravates the chance of attack among asthma Patients. The patients with heart disease, chronic bronchitis and low immune system are also at high risk." He added that while harmful smoke increase the chance of conjunctivitis, loud noise makes people's behaviour irritating. Besides, burn injuries are most common on the hands, eyes and face.

Similarly, ears, nose and throat specialist, Dr PP Chopra said that loud noise of crackers can damage eardrums. After a loud noise, most people feel numbness in ears for few seconds. Even loud and continuous noise can make a person deaf.

Dos and Don'ts:

Light firecrackers in an open area

Remove all inflammable articles before lighting firecrackers

Wear cotton clothes that fit close

Keep doors and windows closed to prevent stray firecrackers from entering

Always ensure the supervision of an adult around children playing with firecrackers

Maintain safe distance from the firecrackers while lighting them and dispose them safely to prevent burn accidents

Keep a bucket of water or sand and a blanket neat to extinguish fire

Pour water to douse fire

In case of minor burn, pour water till the sensation subsides

Do not hold firecrackers in hand while lighting them
