Irans ambassador to Dushanbe says the Islamic Republic is planning to export gas to Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and China via a new pipeline.
"According to the agreement reached by the heads of Tajikistan, Iran and Afghanistan in Dushanbe, a pipeline will be built running from Iran to Tajikistan through Afghanistan and further to Kyrgyzstan and China," Ali Asghar Sherdoust told Trend News Agency on Wednesday.
Referring to the recent joint meeting of the presidents of Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan in Dushanbe, Sherdoust added that the sides have been discussing the implementation of projects on the transportation of electricity and water for several years and a document on this issue has been signed following negotiations by the three countries. The three heads of state signed agreements on the establishment of connecting routes and the exchange of oil, gas and water during the fifth trilateral summit of the presidents of the three Persian-speaking countries in Dushanbe on March 25, 2012.
The Iranian ambassador to Dushanbe also stressed that the economic cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran has been actively developing in both the private and public sectors in recent years. "The Iranian private sector in Tajikistan is mainly engaged in [the sectors of] agriculture, industry, cement production and the construction of small power plants," he added.
Tehran is well aware of the potential of Tajikistan, in particular in the field of hydropower, and a special program to attract future investment in this area was prepared in this sector, he noted.
Iran, which sits on the world's second largest natural gas reserves, is making efforts to boost its gas production by increasing foreign and domestic investments, especially in its South Pars gas field.
