Iran's leader calls for increase in local production of goods and curtailing imports of foreign made goods in his new year message in order to beat the sanctions:

Seems like a good idea to me

That is the only way to progress. In fact they should have done it long ago.

Formula for GDP

GDP = (All goods and services manufactured in a nation) - (All goods and services imported to the nation)

So if you produce more locally and import less, then GDP will go up. If you import more and produce less, the GDP will go down.
 
That is exactly the right thing to do. :tup:

We too were sanctioned by the West, for many decades now.

That enouraged us to build up our domestic industries in order to be self sufficient. The Western sanctions backfired on them, by making us stronger. And now the sanctions will backfire again, by making Iran stronger.
