ANKARA - Turkey will buy a first batch of two F-35A Joint Strike Fighters as a sign of its commitment to the troubled U.S.-led program, the government's defense procurement agency said Jan. 5.

A statement said the government had authorized the order to meet the future needs of the Turkish air force for next-generation fighter planes.

Turkey has long planned to purchase about 100 jets to replace its F-4 and F-16 fleet, but the increasing costs have hampered the acquisitions.

The Joint Strike Fighter, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is the Pentagon's most expensive weapons program ever.

Its cost has jumped to about $385 billion, and the price of each plane is now well over $100 million. U.S. officials said last month that it has encountered a spate of technical problems expected to delay production still further.

However, Japan said it had chosen the F-35 for its next-generation mainstay fighter, ordering 45 of the aircraft in a deal worth around $4.7 billion.

The Pentagon plans three versions of the plane: the standard F-35A that would replace the F-16 fighter, the F-35C designed to land on naval carriers to replace the F-18 and the F-35B vertical take-off model that would supplant the Harrier aircraft flown by U.S. Marines.

Not good.

Turkey still unable to come up own design on Air Force, the deal was off with its best friend South Korea (KF-X programs- refused equal partnership).

Still relay heavily on US and NATO counterparts slaves.

What Turkey needs is self-reliance. We are so pathetic when we are dealing with these same people who murder millions of innocent Muslims all around the world... I am getting so angry of the injustice being done to Muslims just because they are Muslims.

Ah the glory, our past glory. We have become the beggars, from being the most influential and leading world power. We need to regain our dignity. We need to forget the so-called nation idea. Once we can be free of nationalism, which is invented by the Europeans, we can be free of the chains that set limit to integrity and development between the Muslims. Borders are nothing but limits, limiting the poor from advantaging. Empowering the strong.

Nationalism is a lie, it is a deception. It is a social construction, manufactured to make the rich even richer, to sustain the current biased unfair system. A system that in itself is completely inhuman and inherently corrupt. Interest rates, that in itself is one of the biggest sins in Islam, enslave people to big corporation. Western capitalism is about materialism and is completely egocentric. People don't give a damn that millions of people die of hunger in Africa and Asia.

Turkey and other Muslim countries must break out of this evil cycle of self-destruction and develop a just and fair system. A system that does not leave the poor behind, a system that teaches real human values. That every single persons life is immeasurable. That one dying child in Africa, of food or medical shortage, is our responsibility. We should stop focusing on pure profit maximizing and instead maximize true human values.

Zulkarneyn Bro, Life is unfair i know. But hopely in the future we dont have to buy crap from these creedy western f@cks anymore, We could sell our weapons so our muslim brothers and fight back against these creedy subhuman F@cks. Lets hope that soon USA will not come with a pathetic theory about Turkey 'making' nuclear bombs so they could attack us.

Nah, Turkey is a NATO ally, i.e. one of those 'creedy western f@cks' you so hate.

They also actually adhere to their agreements.

Without a doubt, Turkey is in a better position in the Middle-East with NATO than without NATO, and they know it.

Good to see relations looking up again though, that spat with Israel was a nasty one but it seems to be behind them both, though you might not like it.

Life is unfair.

Relationship with USA was not effected by the Mavi Marmara flotila massacre, It improved actually with the stationing of Predators on Turkish soil, NATO Defence shield and the Sale of 3 Supercobras and Spare parts.

The Relations with Israel are still bad even when the Air forces reopened cooperation. Its mainly because the Iranian Threaths. Turkey still is fully backed by the arab league so we dont need NATO for stabilizing and dealing with threaths in the middle east.

Turkey is still more east then West

i dont want to sound rude, but... what Pakistan needs and what Turkey need is totally different. we need stealth technology. and that quick. we are surrounded by enemies and they also have 4th gen technology.

jf-17 isn't exactly what Turkey is looking for. we aren't heavily dependent on US and NATO.

i dont understand why it is bad to be a part of NATO?!

we develop most of our things in our country indigeniously, naval ships, attack helicopters, tanks etc.

a jet isn't something you can make in some years. it takes more than a decade to R&D and come up with a prototype, not to forgett the testing and all that stuff. South-Korea deal was something we went away from because of the amount of involvement we would get from South-Korea.

it's good. now Greeks atleast wont be able to annoy us over the Aegan sea when we train.

dont forget that we are also a part of the F-35 program.

No one killed more Muslims than Muslims themselves.
No one helped Muslims more than US.

First batches of F-35s will have many childhood problems, so it maybe wise not to hurry.

i'd rather have the West come and help us that is far more supperior be it military, technologically, air force vice, naval vice. you name it...

Arabs have experience. nothing more. they cant contribute with help to us like NATO can. NATO has trained for this for 60 years. and now some arabs (not insulting) is going to come and help us in a war time. they can barely save them self.

I don't think you got it. Maybe you will realize later, I guess 20 years from today. Just read post #4 and #6.

No one killed more Muslims than Muslims themselves.
No one helped Muslims more than US.
For to sake of following up on your logic;
No one killed more Christians than Christian themselves.
No one helped US more than Muslims.

or

No one killed more Jews than Jews themselves.. Hm..
No one helped Jews more than US.

and it goes on and on...

Your right, But the Arab league is specificly made for Diplomatic(If not, military) solutions Middle-East so if we ever want to be a dominant power in the Middle-east i would strongly recommend making better relations with them. And i never actually said i thatTurkey should or will leave NATO my point is simply we dont need them when it comes at stabilizing or retaliating of middle-eastern issues.

The armed Forces of the arab States have no standardized common Training and Equipment, they use Equipment from Russia, US and Europe. There is also a big lack of a strong Defence Industry in the arab World, the Situation in Central Asia is also similar. Turkeys Armed Forces are Capable enough to Counter Threats in our direct Neighborhood, but not capable enough to counter the Threat in our Zones of Influence(North Africa, arabian Peninsula, eastern mediteran, Balkan Central and south Asia). Turkey need to strengthen it's indigenous Defence Industry and equip, train the armed Forces in their Sphere of Influence !
