Pak nuclear weapons ‘vulnerable’: US official

WASHINGTON: Political turmoil in Pakistan has not seriously threatened the military’s control of its nuclear weapons “but vulnerabilities exist”, US intelligence said in a report on Tuesday.

“We judge the ongoing political uncertainty in Pakistan has not seriously threatened the military’s control of the nuclear arsenal, but vulnerabilities exist,” the US intelligence community said in its annual threat assessment.

Noting that the Pakistan Army was responsible for the country’s nuclear programs, the report said, “we judge that the Army’s management of nuclear policy issues – to include physical security – has not been degraded by Pakistan’s political crisis.”

US intelligence chief Mike McConnell told a Senate hearing that al-Qaeda, increasingly shut down in Iraq, is establishing cells in other countries as Osama bin Laden’s organisation uses a “safe haven” in Pakistan’s tribal region to train for attacks in Afghanistan, the Middle East, Africa and the United States.

“Al-Qaeda remains the pre-eminent threat against the United States,” McConnell said. He said that fewer than 100 al-Qaeda terrorists had moved from Iraq to establish cells in other countries as the US military clamped down on their activities, and “they may deploy resources to mount attacks outside the country”.

The al-Qaeda network in Iraq and in Pakistan and Afghanistan has suffered setbacks, but he said the group posed a persistent and growing danger. He said that al-Qaeda maintained a “safe haven” in Pakistan’s tribal areas, where it was able to stage attacks supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The Pakistani tribal areas provide al-Qaeda “many of the advantages it once derived from its base across the border in Afghanistan, albeit on a smaller and less secure scale”, allowing militants to train for strikes in Pakistan, the Middle East, Africa and the United States, McConnell said.

Terrorists use the “sanctuary” of Pakistan’s border area to “maintain a cadre of skilled lieutenants capable of directing the organisation’s operations around the world”, McConnell told the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The next attack on the United States will most likely be launched by al-Qaeda operating in “under-governed regions” of Pakistan, Adm Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, planned to tell Congress on Wednesday.

“Continued congressional support for the legitimate government of Pakistan braces this bulwark in the long war against violent extremism,” Mullen states in remarks prepared for a separate budget hearing and obtained by The Associated Press.

Still, McConnell praised Pakistan’s cooperation in the fight against extremists, saying that hundreds of Pakistanis have died while fighting terrorists. He said Islamabad had done more to “neutralise” terrorists than any other partner of the United States.

Despite the Pakistani cooperation, Lt-Gen Michael Maples, director of the Defence Intelligence Agency, said the Pakistani military had been unable to disrupt or damage al-Qaeda terrorists operating in the tribal border region. And the US military is prohibited by Pakistan from pursuing Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters that cross the border to conduct attacks inside Afghanistan.

McConnell also told the Intelligence Committee that the Taliban, once thought to be routed from Afghanistan, had expanded its operations into previously peaceful areas of the west and around the capital of Kabul, despite the death or capture of three top commanders in the last year.

At the same hearing, CIA Director Michael Hayden publicly confirmed for the first time the names of three suspected al-Qaeda terrorists who were subjected to a particularly harsh interrogation technique known as waterboarding, and why.

“We used it against these three detainees because of the circumstances at the time,” Hayden said. “There was the belief that additional catastrophic attacks against the homeland were inevitable. And we had limited knowledge about al-Qaeda and its workings. Those two realities have changed.”

Hayden said that Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the purported mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, and Abu Zubayda and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri were subject to the harsh interrogations in 2002 and 2003.

Waterboarding is an interrogation technique that critics call torture. Waterboarding induces a feeling of imminent drowning with the restrained subject’s mouth covered and water poured over his face.

“Waterboarding taken to its extreme, could be death, you could drown someone,” McConnell acknowledged. He said waterboarding remains a technique in the CIA’s arsenal, but it would require the consent of the president and legal approval of the attorney general.

US trying to capture our nukes: minister

IRFAN BUKHARI

ISLAMABAD - Caretaker Law Minister Afzal Haider on Thursday said that America was trying to capture Pakistani nuclear arsenal aimed to seize the natural resources of the region.
“By putting fingers on the security of Pakistan’s nuclear stockpile, US wants to destabilise the region that is replete with natural resources. America’s aggression against Afghanistan and Iraq is part of the same strategy,” he stated this while addressing a ceremony organised to commemorate the 29th anniversary of Iranian revolution.
The Law Minister said that it was the revolution of 1979 that had bestowed courage to Iranian nation to stand against the biggest Satan (America) of the time. “We (Pakistanis) should deeply analyse the Iranian revolution to learn a lesson from it as it could help us eradicating our woes,” he said.
Lauding the vision of Iranian leadership, he said, “It is the fruit of revolution that today Iran’s literacy rate is 90 per cent. In fact the revolution of Iran is the revolution of thinking pattern,” he added.
Ambassador of Iran to Pakistan Masha’allah Shakeri started his speech with the poetry of Iqbal and said that Iranian revolution was nothing else but the story of self-reliance, self-confidence and self-belief. “Iranian nation believes in neither East nor West but Islam. All the Muslims across the globe are the members of one society and it is our religious duty to remove our mutual differences for the betterment of Ummah,” the ambassador noted. He concluded his address while reciting a Persian poem of Iqbal and said that the success of Iranian revolution was in fact the success of all Muslims.
Akram Zakki, former foreign secretary, said that America had no guts to attack Iran.
“US attacked Iraq under pretax of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) despite the fact that it had got solid reports that the country has no such kinds of weapons while on the other hand it wants to resolve the nuclear issue with North Korea through talks,” he said, adding that America in the last would have to come on talks with Iran to settle the issue.
JI Leader Dr Kousar Firdous, while addressing the gathering, said that Iranian revolution had created a gender-balanced society in Iran.
“Iran after revolution presents the true picture of equity and justice where women find their true rights given to them by Islam,” she observed. Amin Mushadi, Dr Aalia Imam, Asad Raza Bukhari, Qasim Jan (VC, QAU), Umar Riaz Abbasi and others also addressed the gathering.

Indian official warns over Pakistan nukes: report

NEW DELHI, Feb 18: India should be deeply concerned about the possibility of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons falling into the hands of extremists, a top official was reported as saying on Monday.

“The nature of the dangers which nuclear weapons pose has dramatically intensified with the growing risk that such weapons may be acquired by terrorists... ,” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s special envoy Shyam Saran said.

“The mounting concern over the likelihood that in a situation of chaos, Pakistan’s nuclear assets may fall into the hands of jihadi elements ... underscores how real this danger has become,” Saran was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India at a lecture in New Delhi.

“India has to be deeply concerned about the danger it faces” from this “new and growing threat,” said Saran, who was India’s top diplomat until 2006.

The United States and other Western countries have expressed mounting concern over the security of Islamabad’s estimated 50 warheads, with Pakistani forces battling a growing insurgency by Al-Qaeda-linked militants. Its indeed a growing concern for Pakistan. Unsecure Indian nuclear weapons could mean end of Pakistan. We all know that separatist movements inside India are planning to get a grip on them to get an edge on the negotiating table. The radio active waves (which may effect Pak) are said to be more dangerous than the explosion itself! Any thoughts on what Pakistan can do? or any country for that matter? India?

Pakistan does not need to worry about India exploding a nuke. The worry from India is the same as the worry about the US..they want to steal pak nukes to create a weaker pakistan. This nonsense about jihadi taliban terrorists stealing the nukes is just an excuse to be able to take the nukes away.

Right now the govt of India respects Pakistan's right to be nuclear armed. However there are right wing nutjobs within India who are definately against a nuclear armed and powerful Pakistan. Just like there are anti-pakistani right wing hostile minded people within the US who are also against a powerful and independent pakistan and they also want to take nukes away to make pakistan weaker.

:lol:don't worry if hindutva power gets strong enough, they won't last because they won't realize what hit them.

It wouldnt suprise me at all if after the new government is elected in the US specially if Obama comes into the power, we might have to face an attack. India though was sitting quietly now seems to have the same itch only the US has (afterall both the countries now share the same strategic interests to counter china) which by the way does not know about its own nuclear weapons flying around with no one knowning about them. Funny it is however in the current scenario of Might being right, i sincerely believe we do need to counter this threat. For god sake US already knows that next attack on the US will be launched from pakistan, this should be enough as an eye opener for all those who consider this threat as not real. US is exploring all options of attacking pakistan, sometimes by blaming PA of not doing enough for WOT or our nukes falling into the wrong hands. Why it is that only our nukes can fall into the wrong hands which by the way are more safer then even the US itself, why cant it be of india's or israel or the mighty US. Does our nuclear weapons have some sort of attraction power to these terrorists that attracks them to it. The reason is simple US does not want pakistan to have nuclear weapons and specialy after the interests have been heavily shifted in both the cases. US interests in india, while pakistan's towards china and china having access through Gawadar. It would be better if all of the political parties can sit together and for once leave the BS politics aside and focus on whats the real threat pakistan might have to face in the coming years, we need to be ready rather being taken out just like iraq was. God bless Pakistan.

You're uniquely dangerous.

You possess nuclear weapons. You proliferate nuclear weapons technology for profit or raison d'etat. You've a raging irhabist insurgency that you've invited into your nation. You're uneducated, corrupt, and strife-ridden. You've no justice system and your press is neither free nor broad-based. You've delusional visions of denied grandeur yet refuse to provide the basic institutions of governance at the service of your citizens, many of whom remain illiterate.

Add it up.

You scare the bejeezus out of anybody with an ounce of sense.

:lol:don't worry if hindutva power gets strong enough, they won't last because they won't realize what hit them.

I don't view this as a laughing matter. A two way nuclear exchange can kill millions of Pakistanis very easily.

calm down. sorry dude, it's a joke nothing serious. after I'm not the one who said "we have the big bomb... we have passed pakistan"

Agreed maqsad

No matter how much they say we are their allies the only thing that remains at the bottom is that Pakistan is Muslim country with nukes.

By taking away her nukes away, not only Pakistan will get weakened but the entir Muslim Ummah.

Does anyone knows why Pakistan is called the fort of Islam ?????? ( not on the basis of being Muslim country but try to check the world map and location of Pakistan and also the Muslim countries of the world :)]

Yeah yeah I assume you are talking about Vajpayee who was also said to suffer from some type of autism or schizophrenia. I know there are many Indians on forums too who act like they will "win" a nuclear war just by having more people left standing but still my point is why sink to that level of stupidty to compete with them!

my point exactly, do you remember some article describing a survey among the indians regarding attacking pakistan. some of the people agreed to even go to nuclear war and thought they would outlast pakistan because of their population. when asked what they think a nuclear attack would be like, one of them replied, "I think it's a type of gas"!:cheesy::crazy:
even pakistanis shouldn't be shouting we will beat india. most of our people don't even know what the a-bomb actually is!

the country with the larger population would suffer more. radiation would be spread by wind and it would go from bombay to rural areas killing much more people than it would in pakistan.

Yes that is true that Pakistan itself would get weaker but I am not sure I agree with the "muslim ummah" getting weaker because at the moment pakistani nukes are not officially meant to protect any muslim country through deterrent value. The purpose of pakistani nukes was just to stop right wing lunatic hindutva maniacs from invading Kashmir and dismantling pakistan, right? :smokin:

In fact these nukes are both a blessing and a curse. On one hand they force India to behave itself but on the other hand they can also be used as an excuse to attack pakistan by anyone who believes these nukes are a threat to them rather than just a deterrent.

Why? Because it is bordering Hindustan?
