Poland signs $4.6 billion deal for F-35 fighter jets

Poland signed a $4.6 billion deal with the United States on Friday for the purchase of 32 of its advanced F-35 fighter jets to enhance air defense on NATO's eastern flank at a time of increased Russian military activity.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said it was an "exceptionally important day for Poland's air force and for the security of Poland and of our part of Europe."

Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak signed the deal and handed the document to the U.S. ambassador to Poland, Georgette Mosbacher, during a ceremony at an air force academy in the central town of Deblin.

Duda said it was among the biggest deals in the history of Poland's armed forces and a sign of the strength of relations with the U.S.

The U.S. Department of State commended Poland's commitment to modernizing its military, saying the jet "will improve Poland's ability to provide collective and self-defense."

Poland expects to take delivery of the F-35 A Lightning II aircraft between 2024 and 2030. It will be the 10th NATO member nation to fly F-35 fighters .

U.S., Israeli and British air forces have already used the aircraft in combat.

P oland's contract includes training, logistics and simulators.

The jets will replace some of the Soviet-made MiG-29 fighter aircraft that Poland's air force still uses.

Opposition politicians criticize the contract as too costly and have argued the money could have been used to modernize Poland's air force in other ways.

For Poland, this is excellent decision to buy such high tech 5th Gen fighter. It will boost Poland's Air capabilities .

Not surprising for Poland to go into a buying spree to modernise its armed forces given its inventory is still full of relics from the Warsaw pact.

The most modern aircrafts of the Polish AF are their 48 F-16 Block 52. They need to replace their SU-22 and Mig-29 still in service.

Poland has both the intent and ability(large and fast growing economy) to build a powerful military.

48 F-16 Block 52 and 32 F-35As are clearly a very powerful force. With 900 K-1 tanks as well they would be no pushover even for Russia.

One thing I have noticed in the UK is just how hardworking that Poles are and no surprise that Poland is the most successful former Warsaw Pact economy.

Why???

Nations like Norway & Denmark are regretting because they really have no real use of such an expensive piece of equipment. They should've gone for the F-16 Block 70/72's as they would've severed the requirement as a member of NATO.

Who are they planning on going to War against?

Greece could make a case for the F-35 as they always lock horns with Turkey.

...and after over a decade of service, it still has teething problems. Most recently with its gun.

If BEAR has to take care of above items all it requires him to wipe out those bases with its supersonic cruise missiles..... If they are airborne before strike then Russian Sukhoi 35/57 will deal with them and meanwhile Russian missile force will make it sure that they don't land back after running out of fuel and weapons...

You aware that F-35A will kill PAK-FA due to it's superior stealth and electronics? PAK-FA radar will be jammed if needed but most of the time, PAK-FA will only know a F-35A is around when it's radar warning reciever sounds incoming AMRAAM.
Russia is pretty crap at military tech apart from SAMs, tanks and nuclear submarines
It is not that easy to destroy hardened airbases with missiles as you think it is.

Polacks are not that crazy to attack Russia. They know we can turn Poland into Land of the Moon Craters in several hours - and they know we will do it. They, probably, dream to conquer small states like Slovakia, Lithuania, Czechia, Belorussia after USA leave Europe.
