Exclusive: Indonesia to increase imports from India amid New Delhi-Malaysia spat - sources

Krishna N. Das, Aftab Ahmed

JANUARY 24, 2020

KUALA LUMPUR/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indonesia has agreed to immediately increase imports of Indian buffalo meat, sugar and auto parts after India boosted purchases of Indonesian palm oil amid a spat with rival supplier Malaysia, two Indian government sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Friday.

Indonesia and Malaysia account for 85% of the world’s palm oil output while India is the biggest buyer of edible oil. India has effectively halted imports of refined palm oil from Malaysia since early January in retaliation for Malaysia’s accusation that recent Indian policies discriminate against Muslims.

India is a Hindu-majority country while Malaysia is mainly Muslim.

Indonesia, the world’s biggest palm oil producer and exporter, is expected to be the biggest beneficiary of India’s row with Malaysia. Indonesian crude palm oil has sold at a premium to Malaysian oil since India this month placed curbs on imports of refined palm oil.

The trade ministers of India and Indonesia, which want to more than double their bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2025, met in Davos on Thursday and agreed to fast-forward trade between them, one of the informed sources said.

“This is a goal we agreed upon earlier, now the process accelerates,” said the Indian source. Both declined to be named as they were not authorised to talk to the media.

“Starting now, they have promised that they will buy a lot more meat, a lot more sugar and autos/autoparts. Palm oil imports from Indonesia will increase and there are many areas where we will export more.”

The sources declined to give figures.

An Indian government document, reviewed by Reuters, said that Indonesia had “informally agreed” to double the annual quota for Indian bovine meat exports to 200,000 tonnes.

Indian-Indonesian trade was worth $21.2 billion in the last fiscal year that ended in March, $15.84 billion of which comprised Indian purchases.

Indonesian Trade Minister Agus Suparmanto will visit India next month to hold further talks on enhancing trade, according to one of the Indian government sources.

A spokeswoman for Indonesia’s trade ministry had no immediate comment. An Indian trade ministry spokeswoman did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Indonesia imported 94,500 tonnes of Indian buffalo meat worth $323 million in the 2018/19 fiscal year. It is the third biggest buyer of Indian buffalo meat after Vietnam and Malaysia.

Indonesia, however, bought only 555 tonnes of sugar from India last fiscal year.

“They have now changed some of their norms to let more Indian sugar come in,” said one of the sources. “In other areas, there’s an ongoing process of discussion on easing regulations or standards, or increasing quotas in these areas.”

Malaysia’s top sugar refiner told Reuters on Thursday that it would increase purchases of sugar from India, a move that two sources in Malaysia said was part of efforts to placate New Delhi amid the palm spat.

Pakistan should diplomatically engage with indonesia and make them understand that how much important that is for Pakistan and for the kashmir cause and make them stop it.

Pakistan had helped Indonesia during their war for liberation from Dutch as well.

Indonesia is acting pretty retarted lately. Cosying up with India despite Kashmir oppression. That is a very sad state of affairs from Indonesia.

This news is not using credible sources since they both decline to show their real identity but something that is clear is that the sources are Indian.

Indonesia itself is a big producer of automotive parts so I doubt the credibility of the news.

Despite that, India has asked Indonesia to purchase more Indian goods when both nations are agreed to boost their trade into 50 billion dollar. Even if the news is true, it has nothing to do with Indian Malaysian spat since the agreement has been prepared quite long.

Malaysia can look to export to other countries

Malaysia can try to increase exports to other countries to make up for the ~$300 million they earn from India

Potential market growth can be sought in the following countries based on non fully realized demand:

China
Pakistan
Bangladesh
Myanmar
Benin
Egypt
Spain
The US
Vietnam
The Philippines
Turkey
Iran
Russia
The Netherlands
Singapore
UAE
Ghana
Djibouti

Definitely. Pakistan should come to the aid of Malaysia who stood with Pakistan.

They are not idiots like Malays.... Cosing up with Pakistan will give them nothing.... Same pak couldn't even return the favor to Malaysia by attending their summit..... Trade wise it simply can't substitute India....

However I don't trust Indonesia too.... They eye our Andaman Nicobar islands since long time.... They claim that those islands belong to Indonesia.... They are quite capable of snatching those islands if they decide to capture Andaman Nicobar as they are far away from mainland India and very close to Indonesia.... Hope India and Indonesia friendship is not spoiled over those islands...

LOL at friendship. You don't have a friendship with Indonesia. The Indonesians are simply exploiting the situation that has presented itself. Basically they are walking over Malaysia at a time when a country like Indonesia should be standing next to Malaysia. India is using trade blackmail to extort Malaysia. No doubt about it. It will cost them because both Malaysia and Pakistan are not going to forget.

Now you are going to rant about how important and valuable India is, but you have limitations. You overestimate yourself.

And where did I say anything about friendship between India and Indonesia? They are not friends but they are not enemies as well....

None can take our islands. We dont have to worry. Bigger concern for Indonesia is South China Sea and chinese aggression.

We are not overestimating ourselves.... It was Malaysia who poked it's nose into Indian internal matters.... India simply replacing them with Indonesia in retaliation.... What's wrong with that? Let me give you an example.... I used to call one baniya every fortnight and used to purchase all ration worth rs 2000+.... Once I had some issue with my car and I parked my car in front of his shop just for a week as I had to travel.... After a week when I was just back to town my car got towed as "somebody had complained " .... Somehow I came to know that it was my baniya who complained about my car to rto.... I simply replaced him with new supplier..... Hope you understand what I am trying to say

Sorry for that mistake

You are holding 8 million people hostage in occupied Kashmir. The world has for the most part denounced Indian actions. Holding people hostage cannot be described as an internal matter of India. Are you going to go after all the world countries that have denounced your actions?

You went after Malaysia because they are an easy target. A small respectable nation that you try to intimidate. It won't work through. It is not the end of the world. Malaysia can sell elsewhere and I am sure they will.

Indian thuggish behavior is predictable and expected. This Indian behavior is a trademark with the rest of neighboring nations. Indonesian actions are less predictable and more foolish. Exploiting the India Malaysia tit for tat is below the belt. Indonesia should understand that their actions look suspicious. Being one of the largest Islamic nations we expect Indonesia to be understanding towards the Kashmir cause. Indonesia has disappointed unless they overturn this decision and explain their current position. If not, their reputation is at stake.

A few dollars is not everything. This is not even a big sum. There is more at stake for nations when standing for justice and transparency. Any respectable nation would denounce Indian atrocities taking place in occupied Kashmir.
