If you’ve somehow missed it Canada has apparently pissed off Saudi Arabia by raising the country’s terrible human rights record.

Saudi Arabia has responded with a number of measures against Canada since our Foreign Affairs department of government raised the issue.

Saudi Arabia kicked the Canadian ambassador out of the country because of a tweet sent out through the Canadian government condemning the treatment of human-rights activists in the kingdom. It also recalled its own envoy to Canada as well.

2. Recalling Students

Saudi Arabia has also announced that it iswithdrawing all the students from it who are currently studying in Canada. It plans to move them to schools in either the UK or the United States which have similar systems to Canada. Over 15,000 Saudis study in Canada currently and their loss likely means the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars.

3. Cancelling flights

As of August 13th, all flights from the kingdom and Toronto will be cancelled, making it much harder for people to travel between the two countries.

4. Stopping Healthcare

Just today Saudi Arabia announced that it is stopping all medical treatment of its citizens in Canada and will begin the process of moving them out of the country.

5. Trade Freeze

Saudi Arabia has also announced recently that it is going to be freezing all new trade with Canada. It has also stopped new investments being made in this country by it. Trade between Canada and the kingdom was about $4 billion dollars last year, largely owing to Canada selling the Saudis weapons and combat vehicles in a controversial deal.

6. Selling Off Mandate

As part of its plan to stop investing in Canada and to try and hurt the Canadian economy the kingdoms central bank has ordered people to sell off their Canadian investments “no matter what the cost.” Stocks in Canadian markets fell yesterday in part to a massive sell-off by an unknown investor.

Saudi Arabia has had a whole host of countries come out and support its position in this ongoing dispute including, Russia, Egypt, The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Palestinian. Many of Canada’s allies, including the United States, have stayed silent on the issue.

Canada to ask allies to help cool Saudi dispute as kingdom blocks its grain

OTTAWA: Canada plans to seek help from United Arab Emirates and Britain to defuse an escalating diplomatic dispute with Saudi Arabia, sources said on Tuesday, as traders revealed the Arab state would no longer buy Canadian wheat and barley.

The Saudi government on Sunday recalled its ambassador to Ottawa, barred Canada’s ambassador to Riyadh and placed a ban on new trade, denouncing Canada for urging the release of rights activists. Riyadh accused Ottawa on Tuesday of interfering in its internal affairs.

One well placed source said the Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau – which stresses the importance of human rights – planned to reach out to the United Arab Emirates.

“The key is to work with allies and friends in the region to cool things down, which can happen quickly,” said one source, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Another source said Canada would also seek help from Britain. The British government on Tuesday urged Canada and Saudi Arabia to show restraint.

The office of Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland did not respond to requests for comment.

European traders said on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia’s main wheat-buying agency has told grains exporters it will no longer accept Canadian-origin wheat and barley.

The dispute looks set to damage what is a modest bilateral trade relationship worth nearly $4 billion a year. Canadian exports to Saudi Arabia totalled about $1.12 billion in 2017, or 0.2 percent of the total value of Canadian exports. Much of that was tanks, armoured personnel carriers and motor vehicles.

Saudi Arabia has ordered roughly 15,000 Saudis studying in Canada to leave.

The first source said Canada shared the view of foreign policy experts who believe the Saudi reaction reflected internal strains inside the kingdom, where 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is trying to push through domestic reforms.

The source said Canada had no regrets about speaking out on human rights in Saudi Arabia.

“What we did was in line with other countries, with what we do for families of Canadians and in line with what we have done in the past,” said the source.

The previous Conservative government also had challenges with Riyadh over human rights.

Garry Keller, who was chief of staff to ex-Conservative Foreign Minister John Baird, said the government needed to look at how it could help businesses that might be affected.

“The United Arab Emirates are going to want to maintain relationships with Canada … They are the best interlocutor for Canada in the region,” he said.

They have fuckin money and they can even take those 1500 students to go on a long vacation on either phuket or Bali until diplomatic row cools down.

Actually Saudis are trying to hit two birds with one stone. First they are pleasing Trump here since trump is at odds with Canadian govt over tariffs secondly, they are giving stiff warning to EU, Britain that they can do same to them as well if anyone from them tries to question SA over human rights violation and their style of Govt. Saudi Arab is quickly emerging as one of the global power entity in today's time.

Canada has to back down, it was stupid to get involved in this mess. In no way is this (political upmanship) worth the economic exchange we have with KSA. Since when has Canada had a real tough guy face thats relevant anyway? Not since WW2 tbh.

Well played by KSA and Trump.

There is a whole lot more to it than a tweet. This goes up to CSIS' activities in the region

Canada is now run by political correct tyrants. You are right. It should back down and spend more time minding its own business.

I fully support KSA and admire their stand the bold actions to safeguard their sovereignty.

@waz

Bro, can you move this thread to the Arab section of the forum? It's not really fitting for this section.

I don't know what is going on and to me it looks like an overreaction from KSA but on the other hand Canada has no business lecturing other sovereign states online via Twitter using a condensing tone without knowing all the details or even if the reports given to them are accurate about the sister of Badawi.

There must be more to this story although I am against this entire case surrounding Badawi but on the other hand the government in KSA cannot tolerate a Swedish buffet when the region is as it is currently and if tolerating such dissidents, other more extreme ones would/will demand a similar treatment and then we will have a mess. Wait until further reforms have taken place (great reforms so far have taken place on almost every field in a very short time-span) before greater public dissent can be tolerated.

It is a slippery rope. Easy for Canada to lecture when their democratization progress is much older.

Speaking about this issue, how about KSA lecturing Canada about their bloody colonial history and the struggles of the Native Canadians whose people were killed/died due to migration of the forefathers of most Canadian citizens, almost entirely?

Anyway this is quite strange as Saudi Arabian students in Canada and citizens have contributed positively and been law-abiding citizens (not a single case of terrorism) and those Canadians interacting with Saudi Arabians have mostly only positive things to say.

It's a shame that they will be uprooted (15.000 students) and held hostage by some "petty" dispute that began on Twitter. Welcome to 2018.

Anyway a positive thing here is that KSA is not afraid to go against a country as powerful (economically) as Canada and which has close relations with Western powers. So much for the empty propaganda I read on PDF (in particular) about KSA somehow not being able to speak against the West and act at the same time. Once again those lies are being destroyed but I am sure that the usual braindead suspects will try to find excuses.

"Begging"? Are you kidding or do you suffer from delusions of grandeur? Who is the actual "beggar" in this relationship if we are to be honest with all due respect?

Yes, KSA/Arab coalition asking a long-time ally that helped/bailed out Pakistan on numerous occasions for a symbolic number of soldiers (mountain troops mostly) is/was really alpha and omega, lol.

Get down on earth and stop reading moronic low IQ anti-Arab propaganda which is abound on PDF.
