Two U.S. soldiers have gone missing in Afghanistan, as separate bomb attacks claimed the lives of five American troops.
The missing soldiers left their military compound Friday but never returned.
The Afghan chief for Charkh district, located in Logar province in the south, said an armoured vehicle was spotted Friday night. There were two people inside, but it's unclear if they were the missing soldiers.
"They stopped in the main bazaar of Charkh district. The Taliban saw them in the bazaar," district chief Samer Gul told The Associated Press. "They didn't touch them in the bazaar, but notified other Taliban that a four-wheel vehicle was coming their way."
Meanwhile, four U.S. soldiers died in a single bomb blast Saturday amid the latest push by international forces to target Taliban hot spots. Another soldier died in a separate bomb attack, NATO said in a statement.
Including the deaths on Saturday, NATO has lost 75 soldiers in Afghanistan this month.
Fifty-six of these July deaths were American soldiers.
The rising American casualties are making it harder for U.S. President Barack Obama to win support for the war as he sends in thousands of reinforcement troops into Afghanistan.
The U.S.-led international forces are targeting Taliban strongholds in the southern part of Afghanistan in a bid to strengthen the control the Afghan government holds there.
Also Saturday, the Afghan Interior Ministry said five Afghan civilians were killed by a bomb in Uruzgan province's Chora district.
