10,000 MW Nuclear power plant to come up in West Bengal

Kolkata: Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Srikumar Banerjee said here on Saturday that the Department of Atomic Energy has decided to reduce the buffer zone for the 10,000-MW light-water nuclear power plant proposed to be built at Haripur in West Bengal's Purbo Medinipur district.:cheers:

Mr. Banerjee also emphasised that there is no possibility of mass displacement of people while building up the plant as apprehended by the local populace.

Speaking on the sidelines of a function organised for awarding the Ram Mohan Roy Puraskar-2010, he said: “We have decided to reduce the exclusion or buffer zone from 1.6 km to 1 km at Haripur as we have safer technology at hand. Such zones with limited human activity are kept to minimise the impact on the surrounding habitation in case there is an incident of radiation leak.”

Mr. Banerjee received the Ram Mohan Roy Puraskar-2010 for his contribution to the development of science on the 238 {+t} {+h} birth anniversary of the great social reformer.

He, however, said that the exact site selection for the project is not yet complete and a baseline survey of the site is being carried out which involves an attempt to ascertain the nuclear plant's possible impact on the local food, health and education.

Speaking about the safety aspect of nuclear plants, Mr. Banerjee claimed that the safety regulatory mechanism adopted by the plants is “stringent” and the chance of a radiation leak is “negligible”.

“On the contrary, there are places where backward radiation is several times more than places adjoining nuclear plants. In Hyderabad, where there is no nuclear activity, backward radiation is 10 times higher than a nuclear plant,” he pointed out.

Mr. Banerjee said that public awareness campaigns are being organised at places where nuclear plants are proposed to be set up and the AEC is also encouraging people from those sites to visit existing nuclear power plants to be assured about their safety standard.

Saying that the AEC is targeting generation of 35,000 MW of nuclear energy by 2020, he said that a primary criterion for setting up of a nuclear power plant is to scrutinise whether the price of per unit power generated can compete with the price of thermal power available in the region.

The two 2000 MW reactors installed at Kudankulam will be functional by the mid-2011.
