What's new

Will separating the North East be better for everyone?

So according to your logic, if we call Indians, black, hairy, smelly and curry munchers, they won't feel offended right? Since, these words are English which we have adopted from other countries. Also, why is the word "Chinki" officially banned in India if it wasn't taken as racism?

Southerners are called Madrassis and Northerners are called Bhayyas ..... both are slurs .

But I don't see others making a big deal out of it .

Ukima - sama,
You point out a very interesting social situation in India, particularly the Northeast region.
Umm...no, he doesn't.:disagree:

He is describing a non existent situation, one that will apeal to the admins and staff of Pakistan defence forum, but one that doesn't correspond to the ground reality in India. There used to be minor separatist movements in the North-east, all of which were put down by India. The armed secessionis groups were based in bordering countries of B'desh and Burma, and once those governments co-operated with us, those groups were easily swatted.

Right now there are no separatist feelings in the North-east, and most people there are happy to be part of India, as are the people in the South-East, south-west, north-west, central-west, central-east or any other region I may have forgotten to mention.

The OP is getting away with this nonsensical thread only because Pakistanis are glad to see it. Pak has far more serious insurgencies and separatist movements, but if you start a thread about one of them (say Balochistan), then you will be banned. In reality, if thoughts of Balochistan or KP separating from Pak are not to be entertained, then India's N-E separating should not even enter the realm of imagination.

TL/DR version : India's NE is as much part of India as other regions.

Perhaps you and some Indian legal specialists here can enlighten me on laws regarding secession of a state from the Indian Union. Is that even allowed, legally?

The same as the question of secession any any other nation-state - illegal, unconstitutional.

The good news is that such "separatist movements" and "secessionist tendencies" only exist on PDF, not in the real world.

My understanding and appreciation of India has always been that is centered on the 'Mainstream' Culture, as those in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rjasthan, Kerala, Telugu etc. But I have always been deficient in my exposure to Tamil culture and Northeast Culture, tho I have read some articles on it. And on recent readings, I'm so impressed to see that Northeast Indian states and union territories are very close to East Asian culture , and even beautiful phenotype ! So awesome to see how diverse India really is.

The culture in those 4 states are widely different . There is nothing like Mainstream culture .

lets be realistic, India is far too powerful to be challenged by few rag tag NE separatist militants. NE is staying with India whether separatists like it or not, so better make peace with it and move on.

Perhaps there are differences, im sure. I need to study more into Indian culture then. :-)

You definitely have a point, and I would say that perhaps the feelings of discontent in Northeast may be due to lack of priority development? Especially in some of the mountainous regions where there is need of basic amenities such as more developed roads, water systems, electricity and the like. But all of these are factors that can and will be alleviated as India develops , as Indian Government puts more fiscal spending in the Northeast.

Good luck with that ...... You will have to most probably need your entire lifetime for that considering the wide variety along the entire India .... :p:

His point is that there is no one "Indian culture". Every region and even state has distinct cultures and traditions. Heck, insome states, the residents can make distinctions between different regions within that state. Most states have a language of their own too. India officially has 22 national languages, and unofficially we have hundreds of languages and thousands of dialects.

To give one example, the tiny state of Nagaland (one of the states in the N-E) has 17 distinct spoken languages.

There is no way to study "Indian culture", just as there is no way to study "Asian culture", and for the same reason - how culturally similar are China and Israel and Turkey and UAE and Sri Lanka, although they are all part of Asia?

First of all, I have no intention of making this thread a fighting thread, I just want some proper discussions. I'm going to post some recent news about discrimination of people from the North East happening in India.

A Manipur student identified as Soram Kanta (25), son of S Budhi of Luker Maning Leikai died after being pushed from a running train, allegedly by fellow passengers of Dibrugarh-Yesvantpur Express (15902), in West Bengal on October 19.

Family members of the victim informed that he boarded the train from Dimapur on October 17 and contacted his mother on Oct 19 evening from Howrah station, West Bengal.

When contacted again later in the night, his phone was picked up by someone identified as Akbar alias Kalam, a passenger of the train, and informed that he was pushed off from compartment by some unidentified persons while seating near door of the train.

His death body was found at Uleberia near Howrah station the same night. Family members have filed a FIR at Patsoi police station, Imphal today morning and they will leave for Kolkata to collect the soulless body of the victim.

A day after the attack on Manipuri men in Bangalore, two young men from Nagaland were severely beaten up in Gurgaon by a gang of locals.

The locals numbering about seven, held the men in confinement in Sikanderpur area and beat them up with cricket bats and hockey sticks on Wednesday night, a support group for northeast students alleged.

An engineering student from the northeastern state of Manipur was attacked in Bangalore last night by men who allegedly demanded that he "speak in the local Kannada language or get lost, this is India, not China".

Michael Lamjathang Haokip, who heads a Manipuri students' body, alleges that he and his friends were standing near a food stall when they were attacked with stones by the men. The attackers allegedly demanded to know why they were speaking in English.

There are the most recent news and are happening in consecutive days. Almost every people who have been to mainland (please don't get the word mainland wrong, just using it for better and easier understanding) have stories to tell how different we have been treated there including me, I personally do not believe racism in India will stop unless everyone does a plastic surgery to make us look like the other Indians. So, do you believe it will be best to separate North East from India? As I have said, just want to hear your thoughts. ;)

Sources : tntmagazine.in , northeasttoday.in , some facebook NEWS pages, my personal experience.

See how strong Muslim we Bangladeshis are. But we had to separate from Pakistan because of our different culture.

Similarly it is better for NE to separate from India. Because like west Pakistan, India is also ruled from Far North and Far South.
Same condition like us, where East and West Pakistan was located far away. We used to hate each other. Though we had one similarity of religion.

But mainland Indian and NE people have no similarities. Moreover there is no historical relation between Indian and NE people.

OMG
This is one of the most retarded threads on pdf.
Had to actually create an account just to reply .
Having lived in the northeast for many years ,i can state as a fact that AP is the most pro INDIAN STATE ever.
Probably the thread starter hasent been to ap lol.
Infact its the only state in the east where the actual state assembly debates take place in hindi .
Every one i met there could speak hindi or assamese. There was absolutely no anti india sentiments .

You're right, majority of the citizens in the NE have very little similarity with the people of mainland India. Hardly anything surprising about it. The people from Meghalaya, for example, dress up like the Japanese or Koreans (read weird). In Manipur and Mizoram, Korean TV soap operas dominate the TV, with hardly any interest for hindi saas bahu shows.

But that doesn't mean that there exists a desire for separation amongst the people. Not anymore. Talk to any one of the students in NE, and their dreams are to work for Indian corporations, to work in Indian Metropolises, to study at one of the IITs or IIMs or NITs.

Everyone realises their future, and more importantly their prosperity is linked inseparably with the fate of the Indian Union. The discussion in the drawing rooms, the addas, the classes do not revolve around how to attain freedom from India, but on how to get a better livelihood, a better future and almost unanimously, the conviction here is that that is possible only with the support of the Indian government.

Our fates have long since intertwined together with those of the mainland. The center just needs to give enough support, and provide enough breathing space for the NE to flourish. And this is what has happened the last decade and a half. I myself cannot compare the Guwahati of 1998, when I shifted to guwahati to the Guwahati of today.

Not mine, they were the running dogs of the brits. We weren't.
Nope sire. In 1962 the soldiers who died were ours. There are memorials in your state itself.

hello,nihonjin.Arunachal Pradesh/south tibet.
Ahh... Arunachal - beautiful place.

i can state as a fact that AP is the most pro INDIAN STATE ever.
I know that. You know that. They don't know that. LOL :D Relax.

True. Last year we(India and Japan) entered into a mutual treaty for the benefit of the North East specifically. This week itself new railway lines and roads have been started. This prompted the Chinese to open a thread here too. :D Anyway, work will be done in the North East because they need it.

Beautifully pointed out. It's time to work for a common prosperity. Why divide when we can do better together? And yes, the NE needs priority in fund allocation. Last year the deal with Bangladesh got cancelled. It would have helped them with access to a port closer home. But Mamta eliminated all chances of that. Next year February, new plans are coming, request you to have patience, coz in these matters things just don't happen overnight. We, the nation is with you.

Thats so true man especially the teens.Hairstyles and dresses haha.K-pop thing is also huge in mizoram.

Funny thing is Arunachalis speak better Hindi than most Bengali Gujarati or South Indian guys.
Also See Kiren Rijuju. That guy has got a bright future. He is minister of state Home.
Another thing is every single education hub of India is today filled with Manipuri Mizo Ahom etc. They want to educate themselves and improve their lives which is the quintessential Modern Indian dream.
It is because of a large number of them present in rude urban metros that we see these incidents.

You mean the memorials erected because mainland is in charge? We don't care for the mainlanders who died in 62 and those who continue to do so.

Then why does majority of Arunachali population still vote for National Parties .

In 2014 elections voter turnout was 72% with one seat Congress and another for BJP .
