MoD spokesman Gen. Dawlat Waziri said the Afghan forces are still based in Pashtun Kot district from where the siege reports emerged.

He said the Afghan forces are in good condition and continuously receive support from the center as he rejected the reports that the Special Forces are in critical condition.

According to Gen. Waziri, the militants carried out two attacks but both the attacks were repulsed and there are no serious concerns at the moment.

This comes as reports emerged earlier suggesting that at least 40 Special Operations Forces personnel and several civilians are under the siege of the militants.

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has demanded a probe into the alleged killing of at least 20 civilians in fire in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan.

The Afghan government and US military should investigate reports forces summarily executed civilians in Kandahar province during military operations from January 31 to February 1, 2018, Human Rights Watch said in a statement.

According to HRW, citing official reports, on the evening of January 31, the Special Forces Unit of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) backed by US airstrikes began an offensive against insurgents in the Band-e Timor area of Maiwand district and the Reg area of Panjwai district.

One witness said, “when the airplanes came we fled. But as the people were running away the forces were shooting them.”
