Fascinating book, and really good perspective on life... I would recommend this book to anyone to fine tune the notion on how to handle life and its circumstances.

"
Mo Gawdat is a remarkable thinker and the Chief Business Officer at Google’s [X], an elite team of engineers that comprise Google’s futuristic “dream factory.” Applying his superior skills of logic and problem solving to the issue of happiness, he proposes an algorithm based on an understanding of how the brain takes in and processes joy and sadness. Then he solves for happy.

In 2001 Mo Gawdat realized that despite his incredible success, he was desperately unhappy. A lifelong learner, he attacked the problem as an engineer would: examining all the provable facts and scrupulously applying logic. Eventually, his countless hours of research and science proved successful, and he discovered the equation for permanent happiness.

Thirteen years later, Mo’s algorithm would be put to the ultimate test. After the sudden death of his son, Ali, Mo and his family turned to his equation—and it saved them from despair. In dealing with the horrible loss, Mo found his mission: he would pull off the type of “moonshot” goal that he and his colleagues were always aiming for—he would share his equation with the world and help as many people as possible become happier.

In Solve for Happy Mo questions some of the most fundamental aspects of our existence, shares the underlying reasons for suffering, and plots out a step-by-step process for achieving lifelong happiness and enduring contentment. He shows us how to view life through a clear lens, teaching us how to dispel the illusions that cloud our thinking; overcome the brain’s blind spots; and embrace five ultimate truths.
No matter what obstacles we face, what burdens we bear, what trials we’ve experienced, we can all be content with our present situation and optimistic about the future."

I believe he was from Alsace, and thus was able to enlist as a German in the regular Heer (but in the Grossdeutshland division - which was one of the elite).
Alsace, the Franco-German Kashmir

There are inaccuracies in the book (its a personal recollection) but well worth a read...after all it would be weird if there was no human element to such. I read it some 10 years ago I believe (the French version).

There is talk of it being made into a movie by the Dutch guy that did Black Book....dunno if that has led anywhere.

Can't wait for Dunkirk later this year....should be a good one I feel.
Interesting. Yeah usually that is the case with memoirs since they're usually written way after the event so there isn't anything to be disappointed about especially since the guy (no pun intended) was an actual soldier who lived what he wrote about. It'd be an entirely different thing if he hadn't actually fought in the war.

An upcoming film or book?

Yeah the title and author of that book seem familiar. If I'm correct the author was a French volunteer in the Wehrmacht (?).
@Vergennes

My first book on the Eastern Front was by the Belgian Walloon Fascist and volunteer Leon Degrelle called Campaign In Russia (1st English edition, translated from the original French Front de l'Est, 1941-1945). In fact I opened an entire thread on Leon Degrelle.

Degrelle, despite the Germans offering him the position of an officer in the Walloon Legion he himself created, chose instead to enlist as a humble private and earn his way up to eventually become an SS General through his own merit as a fearless soldier. Truly an embodiment of the Fascist spirit that even Hitler himself who, while personally honoring Degrelle with the Knights Cross, is famously quoted to have said to Degrelle that "You are almost unique in history. A political leader who fights as a true soldier. If i had a son, i would wish him to be like you".

A great book by a great man. This is the second edition with new title and I'm glad I own this book as it's one of my prized books.

Other books that I have read on the Eastern Front are Sniper On The Eastern Front by Sepp Allerberger (I hope I spelled that right) and Cross of Iron by Willi Heinrich (fictional characters and unique plot twist, the author most definitely included some of his own experience as a veteran of the Eastern Front).

Yeah man no problem. I'd hate to be the only WW2 enthusiast on this forum and so I'm glad there are other members with similar interests. Which is why I always tag you, @Psychic and @Nilgiri in my every post much to your guy's annoyance :D.
Degrelle remained a national socialist till death !

No worries. Here's a free PDF version on this site.
Thanks!!
eah I bought that one for my Kindle. Kindle versions are much cheaper compared to the actual book.

But when I like a book alot I'll get the physical copy.
I'm also thinking of getting kindle as Amazon have all the books that i want and are not available on Google play.

Alsace, the Franco-German Kashmir
hahaha

Film

Degrelle remained a national socialist till death !
Well, a Rexist to be precise. It's very interesting how Fascism came in so many different flavors, each unique to the national character of the particular nation, embodying the spirit of its past, its present, and it's future.

All of these movements formed independent of each other and yet they shared the same fundamental ideals which ultimately bonded them. Because these ideals are universal and natural.

Also, another thing I noticed, all Fascist leaders were great orators.
A film. Should be out later next month.
Nice! Would love to see it. I enjoyed Hacksaw Ridge and just saw the new Russian Stalingrad film.

Just finished reading this book (it's the first time i have ever read a book i found reading books boring but not anymore) i just don't know what to say! this book tells you of what a German soldier went through on Eastern Front of how every soldier actually feels on battlefield under artillery fire or when he sees a tank charging straight towards him! it truly is an amazing book everyone should give it a try no matter what.

Next up "Tigers in the mud" By Otto Carius

@Nilgiri @Desert Fox @Arsalan @Vergennes @django

and yes desert fox bro that thread is like my baby :p thank you again for opening it on a request of a newbie (as i was at that time on PDF).

You will like Tigers in the mud. :)

I am facing some serious problem with my love for books.
  1. Have moved to Faisalabad and there is ABSOLUTELY no good book shop from where i can get English books. If i go to Lahore there are a couple of stores but they sell at high price (original edition). In past i used to buy loads of them from Sadar - Rawalpindi where you can get the Services Book Club edition at very good price (price is very important to me in books since i get to buy more and more :P )
  2. I simply failed at reading e-books. THEY ARE NO FUN specially once you are addicted to paper back and that night time reading habit
  3. Started reading Ibn-e-Khaldoon and it is SOOOOOOO BIG and lengthy!
  4. Got married :(
Now while there is no solution for prob number three, luckily it is not a big problem either since THAT can be managed. The problem is mainly about getting books and getting the book i am looking for. Have a few contact number of Old Book Bank (selling Services Book Club edition and pirated editions but never ordered them on phone). Akhri do teen pindi ka chakron mein jo list the myri wo books mili bhe nai so that was a disappointment as well.

Try ordering from one of these you're ordering books only so damage aur nuksan ki bhi koi tension ni hai.
but ek important baat always use the link when it says "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com."
like it says on this page.

WAHHH!!

You are a life saver. I hope this will work out for me!!

But two IMPORTANT questions:
  1. Are they selling originals? Prices are quite high for those and i prefer Cheaper editions since i can buy more of them. A collect them and have a mini library. Some 200-210 books now. :)
  2. THEY DO SEND PAPER BACK, right? It not e-book!!

Wait i will check the link right now. :)
EDIT:
OK i checked it. The prices are ok since they are offering used ones as well and MORE IMPORTANTLY they offer Mass Market Editions. They are best for me. :) (Hard Binding bnda kuch khas khas boook ke he lyta ha :P )
They do have paper back so that is sorted as well.
:)
I guess i will need to make an account on Amzon for this to work right?

Mein to kahon ga stay away from used cuz mostly it's the market place sellers who sell those not amazon itself.
