The U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force intercepted for the first time an anti-ship cruise missile surrogate using Raytheon’s Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) cued by JLENS. An affordable, elevated, persistent over-the-horizon sensor system, JLENS uses a powerful integrated radar system to detect, track and target a variety of threats.

“Integrating JLENS’ precision detection and targeting information with the combat-proven AMRAAM gives our military a new way to defend the fleet and our allies from anti-ship cruise missiles that threaten vital waterways and critical chokepoints,” said Dave Gulla, vice president of Global Integrated Sensors for Raytheon’s Integrated Defense Systems business.

During the July 17 test, the Army’s JLENS acquired and tracked an anti-ship cruise missile surrogate and passed targeting data to an Air Force F-15E via Link 16, enabling the fighter pilot to fire an AIM-120C7 AMRAAM, culminating in the weapon intercepting the target, meeting all test objectives.

“JLENS has proven it can defend and extend the battlespace by integrating with Patriot, Standard Missile-6, and now AMRAAM,” said Dean Barten, the U.S. Army’s JLENS product manager. “This test enhances the cruise missile defense umbrella, and when this capability is deployed, it will help save lives.”

“Integrating AMRAAM with JLENS enables the world’s most capable air-to-air missile to engage targets at the weapon’s maximum kinematic range,” said Harry Schulte, vice president of Raytheon Missile Systems’ Air Warfare Systems.

“This test further demonstrates AMRAAM’s operational flexibility and provides today’s warfighter with enhanced operational capability, cost effectiveness and future growth solutions.”
JLENS

JLENS consists of an integrated surveillance and fire-control radar on two tethered, 74-meter aerostats, which fly at altitudes of 10,000 feet above sea level and remain aloft and operational for 30 days.

This capability better enables commanders to defend against threats including hostile cruise missiles, low-flying manned and unmanned aircraft, and moving surface vehicles such as boats, mobile missile launchers, automobiles, trucks and tanks. JLENS also provides ascent phase detection of tactical ballistic missiles and large-caliber rockets.

AMRAAM
AMRAAM is a combat-proven missile that has demonstrated operational flexibility in both air-to-air and surface-launch engagement scenarios and provides today’s warfighter with enhanced operational capability, cost effectiveness and future growth options and solutions.
Procured by 36 countries, the combat-proven AMRAAM has been operational and integrated on the F-16, F-15, F/A-18, F-22, Typhoon, Gripen, Tornado, Harrier and F-4, and integration is ongoing in the Joint Strike Fighter aircraft.

Good for the US. They got an antimissile interceptor in the form of AMRAAM though it is the AIM 120C7 or the AIM 120D which did the interception work is not specified in the article.

That's an India killer..

Rolling Airframe Missile Block 2 completes initial fleet firing

The U.S. Navy completed the first fleet firing of Raytheon’s Rolling Airframe Missile Block 2 as part of its ongoing developmental and operational testing (DT/OT).

In an at-sea test conducted from the USS Arlington (LPD 24), two RAM Block 2 missiles engaged a subsonic target in a scenario designed to demonstrate the advanced missile’s defensive capabilities.

This test builds on three DT/OT tests conducted from the U.S. Navy’s Self-Defense Test Ship earlier this year. Those firings successfully engaged both supersonic and sub-sonic maneuvering targets with all RAM Block 2 missiles meeting test objectives. The RAM Block 2 missile is now a perfect 4-for-4 in DT/OT engagements since the start of government testing.

“The first RAM Block 2 firing from a U.S. Navy ship is the culmination of a very strenuous government and industry test program,” said Rick Nelson, vice president of Raytheon Missile Systems’ Naval and Area Defense product line.

“We now focus on the U.S. Navy’s initial operational capability milestone along with delivery of the first RAM Block 2 production missiles in 2014.”

Raytheon and its manufacturing partner RAMSYS of Germany were awarded the second U.S. Navy RAM Block 2 low-rate production contract for 61 missiles in December 2012. In addition, as previously reported, Raytheon and RAMSYS received a production contract for 445 RAM Block 2 missiles from the German navy earlier this year.
RAM
RAM is a supersonic, lightweight, quick reaction, fire-and-forget missile providing defense against anti-ship cruise missiles, helicopter and airborne threats, and hostile surface craft. The missile’s autonomous dual-mode, passive radio frequency and infrared guidance design provide a high-firepower capability for engaging multiple threats simultaneously.

RAM is installed, or planned for installation, aboard more than 170 ships as an integral self-defense weapon for the navies of Egypt, Germany, Greece, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

The RAM Block 2 upgrade includes a four-axis independent control actuator system and an increase in rocket motor capability, increasing the missile’s effective range and delivering a significant increase in maneuverability. The improved missile also incorporates an upgraded passive radio frequency seeker, a digital autopilot and engineering changes in selected infrared seeker components.

There goes the DF-21D -- to the dustbin.

And to the Chinese members here, do not think I misread the 'cruise missile' bit. Am looking at this from a far more technical perspective than you guys can. You guys can bet whatever commission-per-post pay you get from your 50-cent army that your PLA leadership realized the same as I do.

one thing i like about the US is even for weapons they say it will help to save lives.

just like USA wanted to save you in 1971 ?

and how is that ? did it really intercepted DF-21D ? :laughcry:

No. China have yet to open water tested the DF-21D. But the point is not about actually intercepting the DF-21D but about making the AMRAAM adaptable to counter ballistic warheads. You laughed because you are shortsighted.

i laughed because it was really funny ? no one can say we can intercept it, only can assume it till it really does .

rule of thumb, when ignorant about things especially things above your pay grade. best is not make statements that make you look stupid.

rule of Stupidity, claiming certain things which have not taken place yet

There really is no point debating with YOU about this. According to your simple child-like logic, unless the AMRAAM actually intercepted a MIG-21, that mean the AMRAAM cannot intercept the MIG-21. No one can win against this kind of thinking.

yes true  only you can assume it :D
