The Karnataka High Court Wednesday questioned the state government’s logic behind celebrating the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, observing he wasn’t a freedom fighter but a monarch who fought to safeguard his interests.

“What is the logic behind celebrating Tipu Jayanti? Tipu was not a freedom fighter, but a monarch who fought the opponents to safeguard his interests,” Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee, presiding over the division bench, observed.

Justice R B Budhihal is the other member of the bench. The observation was made by the Chief Justice during a hearing on a Public Interest Litigation filed by South Kodagu-based K P Manjunatha, challenging government’s move to celebrate Tipu Jayanti.

Justice Mukherjee also questioned the logic behind celebrating Tipu Jayanti amid fears of communal tension escalating in Kodagu district and other parts of the state.

He observed that last year’s celebrations had resulted in a law-and-order situation after protesters resorted to violence. However, public counsel M R Naik defended the celebrations, saying Tipu was a great warrior who fought against the British. Countering the submissions, Sajan Poovaiah, counsel for the petitioner, said Tipu was a tyrant ruler who killed people belonging to many communities, including Kodavas, Konkanis and Christians.

The hearing will resume tomorrow. The Congress government’s decision to observe the birth anniversary of the 18th century ruler of the erstwhile Mysore kingdom has stirred a major controversy, with opinion sharply divided among intellectuals, academia and different communities and organisations. Tipu Jayanti, slated to be celebrated across the state on November 10, is being observed since last year following a government decision, which had triggered a major row and caused violence in Kodagu district last November.

RSS had stated recently it opposed the celebration and would stage protests against it as the ruler of the erstwhile Mysore kingdom was a “religious bigot and a violent sultan”.

BJP has also expressed its strong opposition to ‘Tipu Jayanti’.

Hinduization of India continues. I can see the narrative slowly heading towards "Tipu Sultan was not a monarch, he was a terrorist". And then you'll have a bunch of fabricated history telling Indians why they should hate him.

Edit: By the way, my avatar is Tipu's sword. :)

Thats right, back then every king fought & stood for his kingdom, this does not make him a freedom fighter.

Political parties make silly moves to garner communal votes.

Tipu is not a terrorist. He was a ruler who tried to protect his Kingdom like any other rulers in India. Not to mention he was defeated and killed. The atrocities he committed on Hindu population is still remembered that's why he is hated. I live in a place where Tipu destroyed an ancient and sacred temple, his army murdered, raped civilians. He is not suited for Indian history. And he is not an example to be looked upon.

Oh this history is already in the making! :woot:

Have you ever seen him do that? No, you just read somewhere.

There will be more stuff to read in the coming days as more saffron history is churn out.

Hyder Ali better deserves this Jayanthi. He was uneducated, but good to people in the domains he conquered. Even Tipu was good to minorities in his kingdom, but not to areas he conquered. Finally he was one of the last powers to effectively fight the british. My respects.

If Tipu Sultan is a freedom fighter then the Nizam of Hyderabad is surely a traitor LOL

Because the Nizam was a great ally of the British and the Sultan was martyred during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore war in which the Nizam had very much assisted the British. :)

You guy's are simply chance-less, you could find conspiracy in anything and everything. LOL :)

Come on dude, the history of Indian independence and Tipu Sultan are taught and known for centuries now, well before the Sangh Parivar or BJP was ever born. No one had tampered with this part of history, because there are insurmountable number of documentary evidences available in this regard . :)

And regarding your twisted logic, did anyone living today seen Prophet Mohammad or Jesus Christ ?? I guess NO. Yet billions believe that they did lived sometime in the past after reading it somewhere right ?? Anyone can claim that their history are also still in the making. It's just absurd. :(

Yes very very important for Karnataka let the Infra, Corruption, Water , Law&Order issue in the state go to hell it looks like congress will loose its last bastion as a state government and off course they will be in a single digit on 2019

its a funny thing you know how why do hindus hate everything muslim. Tipu is loathed while ashoka who proceeded over deaths of hundreds and thouands of hindus is revered. hindus were also responsible of many atrocities against, buddhist, jains and animist communities.

also mysore was as independant as say for example croatia is in europe, there was no such thing as nation or statehood in terms of 'bharat' or 'india' thats a false notion and no such thing existed except under foreign muslim/turkic/mughal/british occupation
