WASHINGTON--The leader of Tibet's exiled government said Wednesday he would accept the Chinese Communist Party's rule in the territory, assuring Beijing it faced no threat to its sovereignty if it eases its grip.

Lobsang Sangay, who was elected in 2011 to a new position of prime minister in exile after the Dalai Lama gave up political duties, appealed to China for new talks on the grievances that have triggered a wave of self-immolations.

On a visit to Washington, Sangay said that the exiled government based in Dharamshala, India, was “not challenging China's sovereignty or territorial integrity” through its repeated calls for greater autonomy.

“What we seek is genuine autonomy as per the framework of the Chinese constitution. In short, if the Chinese government implements their own law, we would take that as genuine autonomy,” he said at the Council on Foreign Relations think tank.

“That, we think, is a moderate, reasonable solution which is a win-win proposition both for the Chinese government and the Tibetan people.”

China's constitution grants Tibet autonomy.

Sangay expressed hope that Tibetans would assume decision-making positions in the region — notably party secretary — and said he did not oppose the control of China's ruling Communists.

“We don't challenge, or ask for, an overthrow of the Communist Party. We don't question or challenge the present structure of the ruling party,” he said.

if he's willing to take orders from our central government, but with more say for Tibetans.

I'm cool with him assuming the party secretary of Tibet maybe even into the central government.

That guy is an Indian, has nothing to do with China. No need to give him any attention.

And Dalai Lama is a liar as always. Yeah, right now he pretends to be a nice person, because he has no power, there is nothing he can do. But when you check his past before 1953, you can find his evil side.

well, what he is is irrelevant, he is a symbol. With him in the helm, we will have finally solved the Tibetan issue and get global approval on the issue.

We can just surround him with Tibetans who are born in Tibet, nothing he can do as it makes sense, those that are loyal and comfortable with China.

We can easily make him a puppet, and make him dance when we want to. He wants more democracy? To me that just means we have a million ways of not doing what he wants, and using the name of democracy to make him kneel.

Come on you are Chinese, you know how important legitimacy is, and how easily we can make a puppet out of a athority figure.

If China is smart, it should just ignore this Dalai Lama. Make a big fuss over him just give him more platform. A smart China should wait for this Dalai Lama to pass away and have a hand in choosing the next one.

Actually this is a good change for you to make peace with him.

Mainland stubbornness actually bring more harm than peace. At least Dalai Lama is honest want to make peace with you, and most of exiled Tibetan listen to him.

Once Dalai Lama is dead, all exiled Tibetan will be ruled by CIA agents. It will make the problem even worse.

If Dalai Lama can really did what he said. I am guessing if he returns to China one day, he will be a new pop star of China with millions of followers.

Best way for China to permanently incorporate Tibet is to learn from Japan's flooding out Okinawa natives with Japanese. In the end, what matters is people and people will have final say eventually when China goes democratic. It's amazing that China controlled Tibet 500 years earlier than Japan's invasion of Ryukyu and Ryukyu has been fully absorbed by Japan but Tibet suddenly became a thorny issue after Dalai Lama fled.

You're an idiot. This is your so called "peaceful" Dalai Lama. The reason KMT was never able to rule Tibet effectively was because of idiots like you. Had you remained on Mainland, we would have been ruled by Western powers.

Jump off the sea and die somewhere.

It's true! He will became a new pop star!

Most of foreigner don't know the relationship between Tibetan and Han Chinese people, because we are fellow Buddhist. It's hard to describe it, but we know it very well in our heart.

Foreigners are always trying to promote China occupation on Tibet. But they know nothing.

Why should we do that?

We are part of each other. We are connected in our heart.

China didn't rule Tibet, but we know we are part of each other.

Without everyone know, we, people in Taiwan work very hard to keep the trust and connection between Tibetan and Han Chinese last.

We are not brag of our effort nor demanding to be recognized as hero. But everyone who know and understand the matter, know Taiwan play a big role on Dalai Lama statement above to accept the Chinese Communist Party's rule in the Tibet. We actually doing good for you, for all China and whole East Asia.

Tibet deserves to be a free nation - just as it was before China invaded, illegally occupied it and forcibly annexed it. The fact that the Tibetans are still offering an olive branch to China, shows that they truly love Tibet and abhor violence.
