More likely 9 million tons per annum.

When these huge coal start generating cheap electricity?

..Project Progress Update

  • First Unit (660 MW) is targeted by Aug 2022
  • COD of complete project is targeted by Feb 2023
A great news for Pak. In a power grid system, total generation = total consumption at all times to keep it stable. Thermal power plants provide the base requirements....

Statement was misreported. Production will be 9 million tons (not 9 billion) per year. This should double current production of Thar coal (currently around 10 million tons). Pakistan will be one of the worlds 10 largest producers of lignite coal in the world in a few years. From what I have read, extractable reserves at this site are coming in much higher than originally forecasted. Bodes well for future projects at other blocks.

Is there any detail available how much it will benefit our country and how much we will be able to save in $ per year.

Russia-Ukraine and GCC- Houthis conflicts are leading to global energy price surge. World needs to increase energy production to reduce energy prices. Not hard to see that increasing Thar coal production is a low cost hedge for Pakistan against these global energy market uncertainties. The more efficiently Pakistan extracts the coal the more the benefit. Thar coal can be extracted from $20 -$30 per ton......imported coal costs over $200 a ton.

Hi,

Apart from the one (Shanghai Electric project) mentioned in above post, these two will also utilize local coal, boasting the annual requirement by ~15mtpa.

What is the quality of the coal? Is it enough that we won’t have to import anymore?

Lignite is a lower quality coal. Power plant has to be designed to burn it. Some of the new power plants designed to operate on imported coal may not be able to use Thar coal. One alternative may be to coat Thar coal with excess furnace oil sitting in refineries currently unused. It would be a synthetic anthracite coal. And help solve the problem of too much furnace oil in Pakistani refineries and increase the BTU of Thar coal.

I dont know when it will materialise problem with Pakistan is that news comes and goes and nothing happen on ground or its so slow that by the time comes world move on to something else.

If this coal thing can reduce the cost big time them our focus should be dams and coal mining with 100% to get it done sooner. Since china is largest country to use coal plants so we can get help from china to convert the coal into useful gas or some sort.

We should install atleast 6000 MW power plants in Thar which will use this coal. Also 1 block specifically needs to be designated for Coal to Gas and Coal to Gasoline plants. If I remember correctly I think cost of 1 barrel gasoline from coal is around $37-$45. If these prices are correct, then what spend $75 on importing a barrel ? We should be producing half of our oil demand from this coal.
