The World Bank declared Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project as one of the best completed within cost and time in a meeting with WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (Retd). This project has taken the edge off load shedding and provided Pakistan with energy security in the long end.
The inauguration was held on March 10, 2018, since then it has generated over 6200 GWh electricity that has assisted millions of people. Furthermore, the profit received by WAPDA has already surpassed the cost of T4HP funding. This extension has also adjusted the intakes of tunnel 3 and 4 by raising them to protect against the residue in the reservoir. Tunnel 5 is soon to be installed by the hydropower project which will result inbringing the generation capacity of Tarbela dam to 6,298 MW. Government’s decision to be an energy reliant economy by 2030 will be backed by hydropower and T4HP is an important step in making this goal a success. 47 percent increase in generating power is recorded with T4HP.
Approximately Rs 30 billion will be collected yearly in profits with this extension. With the execution of Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower project, the installation capacity of Tarbela Hydel Power Station has expanded from 3478MW to 4888MW.
