A misguided Taliban commander handed himself into Afghan police in an attempt to claim the $100 reward being offered for his capture.

Mohammad Ashan, a mid-level commander wanted for his role in at least two attacks on security forces, approached police at a checkpoint in Paktika province with his wanted poster in hand.

Pointing to his picture on the poster, Ashan demanded he be paid the reward money, the Washington Post reports.

Stunned American forces, who came to confirm the insurgent's identity, said Ashan was keen to confirm his identity and pocket the money.

When asked if the picture on the poster was him, Ashan replied, "Yes, yes, that's me! Can I get my award now?" Specialist Matthew Baker told the Post.

The American troops confirmed Ashan’s identity with a biometric scan.

While happy he was in custody, US officials couldn't help but take a swipe at the prisoner's questionable intelligence.

One called Ashan "the Taliban equivalent of the Home Alone burglars", while another simply said "the man is an imbecile".

He thought he had won an "award" he didn't realize that it was a "reward" for his capture.

Classic. What a moron.

Or might be a propaganda joke, anything that puts your enemy down in the eyes of the public will help to justify the war.
If Taliban were imbeciles they wouldn't have beaten the then mighty Russian army, So the story is questionable.

Afghan police should offer more $100 rewards for other Taliban commanders after this incident. The Taliban could be destroyed within days.

I don't think so. That $100 bill might be nothing for people like us but he may be in need for something more important may be for family. Life has become cheap and worst. Sometimes they take up arms for small money. Not everybody is charged with religion capsule. I feel pitty. But he made a good choice. At least he will live and won't kill anymore. Good for all

They probably going to let him go if he joins ANA. He'll pocket the money and go back to the Taliban. It's the same old story with these guys.

Here's the Genius:

Or maybe he is an amateur Afghan actor paid a few bucks to boost NATO troop morale!

Security failures in Afghan shootings | SBS World News

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), which is training Afghans to take over responsibility for security for the whole country by the end of 2014, said the deaths had sapped spirits among its troops.

"Although the incidents are small in number we are aware of the gravity they have as an effect on morale," ISAF spokesman Brigadier General Carsten Jacobson said in Kabul.

"Every single incident has an out-of-proportion effect on morale and that goes for coalition forces as it goes for Afghan national security forces."

The Taliban never fought the Russians.

The Taliban were created in 1992 by ISI to end the civil war in Afghanistan.

The Muhajadeen who fought the Soviets was a coalition of different factions including hardliner Islamists who evolved into the Taliban, the Liberal/Secularists who were the Northern Alliance

Not in this context..
as news of surrendering on a single Benjamin lifts troop morale up and their confidence against the enemy.
Similar "goody-goody" news reports were spread around during the Vietnam conflict on the American Forces Radio Network..
a portrayal of which can be seen in the movie "Good morning Vietnam".
