QRSAM is being developed for the IA, the main requirement for them is a highly mobile SAM able to travel with their armoured columns (as part of IBGs) that can be deployed swiftly to take out UAVs, helicopters, low flying aircraft and missiles.

Look into India’s upcoming Indigenous QRSAMS (Quick Reaction, Surface to Air Missile) Published April 14, 2016 SOURCE: IDRW NEWS NETWORK ASTRA MK-1 LAUNCHED FROM GROUND LAUNCHER Hyderabad-based Bharat Dynamic Limited (BDL) which is one of India’s leading manufacturer of ammunition and missile systems has tied up with DRDO and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) to jointly co-develop QR-SAM (Quick Reaction, Surface to Air Missile) to meet demands of Indian Army . QR-SAM which is currently in development will see first developmental trials in next two or three years and will be completely indigenous missile system which will come with canister launchers and will be highly mobile air defence system with better range than Akash SAM Systems. QR-SAM weapon system will be a quick reaction, all weather, network-centric capable of search on the move, track on move and fire on short halts while engaging multiple targets at ranges of about 30 km with two vehicle configuration for Area Air Defence. QR-SAM will be truck-mounted and Missile firing units will be fitted with a 360° rotatable, electro-mechanically operated, turret-based launch unit. According to highly reliable sources close to idrw.org Missile configuration has been finalized and system design to has been completed to commence actual work on the missile. idrw.org in previous had reported that Indigenously developed Astra Air-to-Air missiles in its first series of developmental trials were fired from Ground-based launchers and had successfully hit Electronic target which in a way also validated flight characters of the missile system making a case for ground-based air defence systems which could ultimately lead to Ground-based Astra air defence system. While DRDO,BEL, and BDL have not confirmed if QR-SAM will be based on Ground-based Astra air defence system but it is likely to borrow a lot of components from Astra and other existing missile systems .

QR-SAM : How Hard-to-detect surface to air missile will reinforce India’s ” Cold Start ” Doctrine Published June 5, 2017 SOURCE: VINAYAK SHETTY / FOR MY TAKE / IDRW.ORG Amid growing tension along the border and mounting aerial threats, India on Sunday successfully tested a brand new next generation Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) from a defence base off Odisha coast. It was the first test of the homegrown canister based sophisticated high speed missile capable of destroying aerial targets and short range missiles. Canister mounted QRSAM is a highly mobile air defence system which comes with 100 percent kill probability, and has the capability to neutralise aerial targets like fighter jets, cruise missiles and air tosurface missiles as well as short-range ballistic missiles. QRSAM is also a vital component in India’s “Cold Start” Doctrine which will ensure the safety of forward Army formations in Enemy territories. QRSAM and Man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) are only surface-to-air missile systems that are capable and also is highly mobile to move with strike corps deep into Pakistani territory to destroy selected targets. QRSAM Air Defence System has a Surveillance and target tracking systems, Command and Control Systems, Missile launchers which can provide Air Defence coverage while on the move. Missiles have a reaction time of fewer than 6 Seconds once launch command of the missile is issued to the missile launcher. The missile system can engage multiple targets within a range from 3 km to 30 km in azimuth and 30 m to 6 km in altitude. The missile can engage aircraft at 500m/s at 20 km and 300m/s at 30 km, along with helicopters and UAVs. The missile also has terminal guidance using an RF seeker. The system has AESA radar with X-band Quad Transmit Reciever Modules (QTMs), Two Way Data Link (TWDL) and IFF. the Battery Surveillance Radar (BSR) has a range up to 120 km and the Multi-Function Fire Control Radar (BMFR) has a tracking range of up to 80 km. Truck based QRSAM Air Defence System can move at speed of 50kmph and has the ability to operate nearly 8 hours at a stretch without the need for refuelling. High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) used are capable of being operated in plains, deserts,semi-deserts, terrains found in India and can also be transported through broad gauge rakes of Indian railways. HMV also has NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) system installed which ensures reliable protection of the crew and internal equipment against mass destruction weapons. HMV also have a Navigation system and Night vision devices to help Driver and Commander to move in the dark and also in unfamiliar terrains. QRSAM Air Defence System unlike Stationary Mobile Air Defence System like Akash and MR-SAM Surface to Air Missiles have fine tuned Surveillance and target tracking systems which have a higher density of aerial scans to reduce their detection time and improve their reaction time while operating in Enemy Territories and the missile can also be fired without missile launcher HMV being stopped. QRSAM Air Defence System is a critical component in India’s “Cold Start” Doctrine which has the ability not only to stop Aerial attacks from rival Air Force but also to neutralise Pakistan’s Solid fueled nuclear-capable tactical ballistic missile system Nasr (Hatf IX) which was specifically developed to attack “mechanized forces like armed brigades and divisions
